Noteworthy things for U-M to still achieve in fball and bball

Submitted by Human Torpedo on

This isn't really meant to nag on our shortcomings. Rather it's a list of milestones I'd like to see Michigan accomplish in the coming years that we've never done before that I think would be awesome:

  1. Reach the College Football Playoff
  2. Reach the Big Ten Football Championship Game
  3. Reach four consecutive Sweet Sixteens in basketball
  4. Reach three consecutive Final Fours in basketball
  5. Win the College Football Playoff
  6. Win the Coaches Poll national title
  7. Win the Cotton Bowl Classic
  8. Win the Big Ten Football Championship Game
  9. Win fourteen games in a season in football
  10. Win all 9 games in a Big Ten conference slate in football
  11. Win the NCAA Tournament as Big Ten regular season champs
  12. Win the NCAA Tournament as Big Ten tourney champs
  13. Win every game in the NCAA Tournament by double digits
  14. Win both the Big Ten regular season and tourney titles in a season
  15. Win five consecutive Big Ten regular season titles in basketball

So, aside from the obviously winning the College Football Playoff, what unique achievements would you like to see us complete in the coming years that we've never done before?

Or beat a good OSU team. While 2011 was fine, we were up against a team that had fired its coach a few months before the season began, lost its star QB (among others) and had the worst season that the school had seen in quite some time. I want to beat a legit OSU team, preferably with a UM team that is worse than them.

Reconcile the Michigan graphics.

Right outside the lockerroom where the players bounce around and get hyped before running down the tunnel it says "Those who stay will be Champions". Ten feet later under two roses is a list of Big Ten Champions. The last entry is 2004...Chad Henne's freshman year. Make a staffer get a cup of black paint and do some updating.

Because I am more of a basketball guy, I would like them win the NCAA tournament, don't care if they win the regular season or tournament, just want to see them win it all?

What do I think is most needed for the school at this point? Personally, think it's a no brainer- #2

UM must at least be .500 against OSU and win a majority of the games against MSU to even have a chance at national relevance.

Bo's goal was to win the Big Ten every year.   If you win the Big Ten,  many of those other things could happen.  A lot of them are not under the team's control.

Beat OSU, Win B1G Championship Game.

That's all I need at this point. I just want to see my team get a Rose Bowl or Playoff bid.

The winning from there on out will just happen.

Since the playoff, the B1G championship game, the nine-game conference season, and the subsequent ability to play fourteen games in a season are all quite recent innovations, Michigan's failure to accomplish any of these is simply a reflection of the troubled state of the program in the past five years rather than some bizarre historical anomaly.

In a similar vein, we could knock Brazil for having never won a World Cup Finals with 48 participants (it hasn't happened yet? A minor problem) and ding the Vegas Golden Knights for never having won a Stanley Cup and criticize Brad Stevens for never getting over the hump as coach of the Celtics.

The Cotton Bowl, at least, has been around for a while and has a great history, but our lack of a title there has more to do with the scarcity of opportunity to attend. We haven't won the Idaho Potato Bowl, either. Seems more telling that we HAVE won the Fiesta, Orange, and Sugar Bowls despite appearing in those games a total of six times.

Ugh. Can't edit.

So, besides winning the college football playoff, what else would I like to see us do that we've never done?

Uh, that's it. Attend and win the playoff. The B1G championship game is implicit there. I want Michigan to win championships; if that's something that our team has already done, well, I want to do it again.

I noticed something not on your list or in the comments that needs to happen. It hasn't really happened, and is necessary for Michigan to win championships. What is it? Michigan needs to improve recruiting. In both football and basketball.

I am not complaining, and recruiting has definitely improved in both sports. However, if Michigan is able to recruit in the top 3 - 6 schools consistently for several years, it will bear fruit. It seems we are losing too many recruiting battles with Stanford and OSU and Alabama and Clemson, etc., etc., etc. Worse is losing recruiting battles to MSU and Wisconsin, etc. On the football front, and especially want to see improvement on the O-Line. In basketball, with difference making bigs, something very hard to find.

Other than that, I echo the comments of many:  Beat Ohio State regularly.

I would agree with football but I think Beilein is doing pretty well in recruiting right now. I think many, including myself, were disappointed not to see a bigger uptick in recruiting after the 2013 tournament run. HOWEVA, given the current climate in basketball recruiting I think Beilein is doing fine. Despite the FBI report kids will still be getting paid and unfortunately things will probably return to business as usual. Still, young players have watched Michigan have a pretty decent run the last six seasons and I think that is finally starting to pay off.  Plus, Beilein’s style is conducive to how the NBA is trending right now and I think players are starting to notice that. If Beilein were 10 years younger I honestly think Michigan would become a basketball powerhouse. Of course if he were 10 years younger he would most likely leave for the NBA at some point. I don’t even want to get into a football discussion because that is just too depressing.

-4,000 yard passer (crazy Michigan has never had one)

-1,000 yard rusher ( I know Michigan has had many, but the fact that Fitzgerald Toussaint was the last Michigan RB to hit the mark makes me angry)

-#1 overall pick in the NBA or NFL draft would also be nice

- I agree with everything else on this list

For football, beating OSU more than twice in 18 tries would be a really good goal to reach for. This program has been all sizzle and no steak for the better part of a decade.

As far as basketball goes, a national title would be great, but other than that I’m not sure there’s much more that could realistically be expected of Beilein. He makes Final Fours, wins big games, beats rivals, wins conference titles, runs a clean program, sends kids to the NBA, and the list goes on. For any program not named Duke, UNC, Kansas or Kentucky, that’s more than enough.
