Millen to announce the MSU game
October 5th, 2010 at 4:27 PM ^
If he says Kirk Cousins would be a great draft pick, we'll know it'll be a good day.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:28 PM ^
NOOOO!!!
Man, first she-male Pam Ward and now the man who destroys NFL teams Matt Millen. Well damn.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:42 PM ^
I don't know what was more embarrassing for ESPNU. The fact that Pam Ward was a commentator or the fact that you couldn't tell the difference between her/him and Danny Kanell
October 5th, 2010 at 5:06 PM ^
before I'd ever want to listen to Pam Ward announce a game.
October 5th, 2010 at 10:13 PM ^
I have no reason to believe that Matt Millen knows anything about football.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:43 PM ^
think you are giving him too much credit for destroying the lions. the canoe was already half full of water and he just jumped in.
October 5th, 2010 at 8:50 PM ^
The canoe was half full of water, but he capsized it, then tore the bottom out of it and lost the paddles down the river then ran it over a waterfall and broke it into a thousand pieces.
It was in bad shape before he got there, but when he was done with it, it was destroyed beyond all hope of reasonably easy salvage. I don't think the Lions can be a decent team next year. I think it'll still take another 2 years with the hole they are still digging out of.
October 6th, 2010 at 1:34 AM ^
I would agree with you but that canoe was what.....a field goal from missing the playoffs. It was consistently winning at least 7 games per season and could be counted on to be a contender. Then Millen took it over and turned it into a team that can barely win 2 games a season.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:31 PM ^
Don't get me wrong, Millen was a complete trainwreck as a GM, but I don't mind his commentary. He's a huge step up from Pam Ward at least.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:32 PM ^
Agreed.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:36 PM ^
Yeah I don't mind Millen either. He tends to give Michigan credit. They'll probably pick on the defense but just about any commentator will be doing that, unfortunately. Although he did go a little overboard with Tate last year in the Notre Dame game..
October 5th, 2010 at 6:34 PM ^
He had countless moments during the UConn game where he made me laugh.
"That's six"
October 5th, 2010 at 10:40 PM ^
Ya I really enjoyed that one also. He said it so matter of fact...
October 5th, 2010 at 4:41 PM ^
A mute hyena would be a huge step up from Pam Ward.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:27 PM ^
There should be a rule about showing Pam Ward's face on this blog
October 5th, 2010 at 5:21 PM ^
Sgt. Wolverine,
is this you in this photo? Saw the link from a recently deleted thread about a State fan made bleacher report "article"
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/483081-the-top-ten-reasons-to-hate-t…
October 5th, 2010 at 5:44 PM ^
Oh. My. God.
That link is incredible. The envy is staggering.
October 5th, 2010 at 6:37 PM ^
Yeah, that's me. That photo is from four years ago, but I still have the helmet, the beard, and the pasty white skin.
It's been a little while since the photo has popped up anywhere, but it was oddly popular among Spartans looking to mock the M fan base. Somebody on RCMB posted about raiding a meth lab, and somebody else posted that photo with the query: "Two of the perpetrators?" (Elsewhere in the thread, somebody decided I looked like the lead singer of the Spin Doctors. That's actually pretty accurate.)
October 5th, 2010 at 7:35 PM ^
Honestly, its kind of an honor for them to have saved a picture of you just to bring it out once a year. Spartan fans are just all around strange. You do look like the lead singer for the Spin Doctors.
October 5th, 2010 at 6:50 PM ^
October 5th, 2010 at 7:31 PM ^
I thought that was a 5th grader until I read he was a journalism major.
October 5th, 2010 at 9:26 PM ^
He needs the Lloyd Brady cut.
October 5th, 2010 at 10:40 PM ^
Did Damefan1 become Spartanfan1?
October 6th, 2010 at 1:52 AM ^
I've said it before and I'll say it again. They keep bringing up Walmart Wolverines like every Spartan fan went to Michigan State. IF that's the case, how come everytime East Lansing is burnt to the ground, they always say that it's not students?
October 5th, 2010 at 5:16 PM ^
Agreed. I think he's actually pretty good. Plus, last year he called Tate a "STUDBOLT" during the Notre Dame game. That has to count for something.
October 5th, 2010 at 6:37 PM ^
He actually does a better then average job of explaing the strategy of the game and is able to give more specific commentary. He was clueless as a GM, but it sounds like he has a strong understanding of the game.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:32 PM ^
I think he does fine, even though I don't like him. Plus, with Millen comes Sean McDonough, who I find excellent at his job.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:52 PM ^
Exactly. McDonough called the ND game last year and I'll never forget the signature "Caught!" when Matthews scored that TD.
So when Denard leads us down the field with a minute left for a win, it'll be McDonough doing the play-by-play and that's what we'll hear when we youtube the game for years to come.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:33 PM ^
he has to get off the Rich Rod is on the hot seat stuff. Way overdone and not relevant right now. I think Millen is OK.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:32 PM ^
Thank God I have tickets!!
October 5th, 2010 at 4:36 PM ^
my thoughts exactly
October 5th, 2010 at 8:59 PM ^
50 yard line. Close.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:37 PM ^
I guess you had to be a Lions fan to hate Millen as much as a lot of people on this board seem to despise the guy. Personally, I find his comments to be pretty funny ("Studbolt", "There's a jockstrap on the field...", "That's six.") and, occasionally, insightful.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:44 PM ^
Exactly. I don't mind Millen. I generally find his commentary better than most of the alternatives. If I were a Lions fan, which I am not, however, I imagine that I would share the collective hate of Millen. He was Charlie Weis bad at his job.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:49 PM ^
Whoa whoa whoa whoa, take it easy. We all poke fun at ol' Charlie Weis, but to compare him to Matt Millen... That's just cruel.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:03 PM ^
October 5th, 2010 at 5:17 PM ^
but to compare him to Matt Millen... That's just cruel.
Maybe, but that doesn't mean it's not warranted.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:21 PM ^
Maybe it's because I lived in Boston for most of the Millen/Lions debacle. That whole era didn't really exist for me as I turned a blind eye to it and watched the Patriots instead. I really don't mind his announcing for Michigan games, especially compared to most of the yahoos we're usually hearing. But I do admit I might have the same visceral reaction to his announcing as a lot of people on this board (also heard the WTKA guys complaining about it this morning) had I been living in Michigan for the last decade.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:34 PM ^
They had a discussion on the radio of "Things you'd rather hear than Matt Millen announcing the Michigan-MSU game."
I'd like to continue that here... my favorite was "Gary Bettman saying 'Sydney Crosby come get the stanley cup'."
October 5th, 2010 at 7:08 PM ^
"Ben Chappell has been miraculously granted an extra year of eligiblity"
or
"Justin Siller will start at QB for Purdue"
October 5th, 2010 at 4:35 PM ^
Haven't we won the games that Millen has been part of?
October 5th, 2010 at 4:55 PM ^
Yup, ND last year and Uconn this year.
And on Denard's TD run against Uconn he said "that's six" when Denard still had to get by another defender or two and about twenty more yards. Kind of comical if you listen to it again.
October 5th, 2010 at 10:29 PM ^
I liked that call. Denard was in the secondary and he knew they weren't going to get him.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:35 PM ^
I don't know what his record is annoucing Michigan games, but I'd rather him than Herbstreit and Musberger. When I think of those two, I instantly think back to the '06 OSU game. I'll take any positive numbers heading into the game.
October 5th, 2010 at 4:54 PM ^
Anybody is better than Musberger. I will never forget when he put up that chart comparing UM and Florida's schedules and went on a totally unnecessary rant about how much better Florida was. Ugh.
Also, Millen is one of the few college commentators that I actually kind of enjoy.
October 5th, 2010 at 5:25 PM ^
October 5th, 2010 at 5:38 PM ^
I remember the signature moment from that chart.....
Danielson said 1-AA western carolina was significantly better than MAC Champion Central Michigan.....
I never laughed so hard in my life!!!
October 5th, 2010 at 4:36 PM ^
The Millen/Mcdonough combo is much more tolerable than Pam Ward/Danny Kanell. Listening with those two made it seem like we were watching a high school JV
