Michigan dark secrets

Submitted by chunkums on

The offseason can be a long and difficult time for football fans, but it is a time that generates some really interesting threads occasionally. In light of this, I pose this question to you all:

What are your deepest and darkest secrets relating to your Michigan fandom? Are you a convert from the other side? Do you have any regrettable stories from watching Michigan games? Do you have any dark secrets now?

I'll start: I love Michigan and cherished my undergraduate years there, but next year I start my PhD at...Ohio State.

Emory University.

A) B/c in US News Rankings it was Top 10--ranked significantly higher than UM by those at-the-time famous rankings (Looking back, this was a remarkably stupid way to assess the quality of a school).

B) It was closer to my immediate family in FL

C) I spent a year in boarding school in CT and froze.  I wanted to go somewhere warm for college.

My first semester would have been Fall 1997...  I'm generally happy with how life has turned out during/after college, so I don't regret my decision, but every now and then I imagine what it would have been like to watch Charles Woodson walk off the field after beating OSU with that rose in his mouth.

Graduated from MSU.  Stayed a Michigan fan my whole stay there, never crossing over to the dark side.  Surprisingly lots of closet Michigan fans at MSU so it wasn't too bad.

1) I wanted to Fire Lloyd Carr (TM) in the 3rd Qtr of the Minn games in 2003 at the Metrodome (a friday night game due to the twins playoff sched.). That team was set up for a national title and shot itself in the foot at Oregon and Iowa b/c of an incompetent ST coordinator. How the hell M got down 3-4 scores to the goofers was beyond me.

2) I turned off the Braylon game for most of the 2nd half. It was like Drew stanton was on a class AA HS team and the M defense was some poor class D small school team. who had the better talent and better athletes? and yet the M defense looked completely lost out there. it's like they played checkers all week instead of prepping for the game.

3) my future wife and my roommate had to convince me to get hockey tix. I didn't want to for $$ and time reasons. I'm basically the biggest college hockey fan anyone knows.

I was accepted into Michigan, and could have stayed with family up there, but I stayed in Florida to save money with in-state tuition. I have always regretted it. I might go for my Ph.D.

I spent four years in undergrad in Ann Arbor, and I'm a third generation fan (and graduate). However, I did my graduate school at UW in Madison. I firmly believe that, with the exception of the local team, Madison is better than Ann Arbor in every possible way.

I once went to a PSU game (against Temple I think) and actively rooted, including chants, for PSU. After graduating from UM and becoming a productive member of society too. It was because of a girl, but still.

At least it was before the Sandusky thing broke wide open.

I cheered against Michigan this year for the first time...

in one of the basketball games. They were playing Hillsdale, where I went for undergrad. Was kind of a sick feeling but also funny because Hillsdale got off to a great start in first five minutes, then was blown out of the water. It was pretty fun being in Crisler as the underdog.

(1) Despite growing up in Ann Arbor and my family having season tickets for three generations, I'm the progeny of two State graduates (my mom did teach at Michigan for a while after her grad program though).

(2) Again, despite growing up in Ann Arbor and being a lifelong fan, I chose to go to a different college (Washington University in St. Louis).

Going to a different school is okay in some cases -- it's not like you sold out to Moo U or that school down south.  My MS is from Colorado but I've never been a Buff -- I will bleed maize and blue until I die!

I was a Junior back when we were playing the first under the lights and I left before halftime and passed out because we were losing so badly. Worst decision of my life.

I grew up in Hawaii and started to like Michigan b/c my uncle (dad's friend) Bobby (RIP) was from Detroit. Well, he told me who to like but never explained who I should rooting against.

So come back to school time I decide that the majority of my wardrobe would be sports related. And being that we lived in HI I had to have my mom buy all this stuff via catalog and have it shipped to me. When all was said and done I had a pair of OSU shorts in regular rotation for about half of my 8th grade year.

1. I hopped a fence and stole a football. A dude chased me for a couple blocks before giving up. Besides a Laffy Tacky when I was 5 it's the only thing I've ever stolen in my life. I'm actually feeling a bit guilty about this now...

2. I left Braylonfest after haftime because my girlfriend (now wife) was cold.

Deciding to go to the lab to get some work done instead of watching the Biakabutuka game. In my defense, I didn't know it was the Biakabutuka game before it became the Biakabutuku game. If someone had told me beforehand that Biakabutuka was going to Biakabutuke OSU, I would have watched. Really, I would have.

Instead, I finished my experiment, got in the car, turned on the radio, and heard the announcers going crazy about Biakabutuku breaking 300 yards against OSU and I thought, oh shit, I missed a good game.

Man I was at that game. Total ... BEAST Mode. Ridiculous. And it was against those mouth breathin Ohio players. Priceless.
Sadly, kinda brought back memories of a few years ago when Wisconsin came out after halftime and basically ran the same effin play....up the middle every time ...25 times in a row and we still couldn't stop them.

the first game I ever attended live was in East Lansing. It was about 22 years ago? I was 12 or 13 years old. My uncle took me to States opener against the Mighty Chips... I thought it was absolutely awesome. Seeing all these older people wearing green face paint, screaming, cheering GO GREEN, GO WHITE!!! Then something happened, I remember walking back to my uncle truck and seeing them same grown ups. Yelling vulgar words, some of them even in tears. My uncle barely spoke a word that long ride home back to Livonia. I remember asking him, "why are you so mad, uncle Alex?" His response still embedded into my head today. "They lost to F**king Central again!!! you got to be F**King kidding me!! Perles is a f**king joke!!!" As a young boy, kinda thought it was funny to see a grown man so upset over a football game. But also learned very quickly that being a Michigan State wasn't going to be that fun. A few years later, my second ever live experience of a college football game was with my smarter uncle. He took me to see Michigan v's Virginia in the pigskin Classic at the big house. Let's just say the rest was history.

I signed an LOI and played for Northwestern. I always wanted to play for Michigan but they were making a coaching change (hadn't named a new coach yet) and I was uncertain if I would have a spot after freshman year. I have wondered every day of my life since if should have just gone to Michigan and hoped the new coach didn't clean house, or stayed as a walk-on if he wanted the scholarship.

I too liked RR's offense, but I would not take him over JH. But at times that offense was great to watch. Growing up on Bo it was great to see some wide open offense (like when Lloyd would get down by 3 scores and open the playbook).

I also thought RR>BH and figured RR would get to a BCS bowl before BH but missed onn that one.

I have an Eddie George OSU jersey in my desk drawer at work. I have an annual bet with a coworker on The Game (loser wears winners jersey for a day around the office) and that dick told me to hang on to the jersey since I'll need to wear it again in November. Since I'm too lazy to mail it back to him I let it sit in there. And I hate it and myself for its presence. All of my hopes and dreams hang on Harbaugh.

I wore a "lucky" shirt for every game of the 2013 ncaa tournament... except for the championship game :-(

For all of you folks saying, "I left after the 1st half" or, "I didn't watch any game after Utah, ND, etc"... Are fairweather fans and don't know what it means to be a Michigan Man.
