Juwan Howard near the top of the list of candidates?

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on May 13th, 2019 at 7:44 PM

I'm not an NBA guy so I'd like to know more about him because I have read that he is a respected assistant coach in the NBA.

Hearing rumblings that Juwan Howard could be on the #Cavs list for Beilein assistant coaches or near the top of the #Michigan list for its next head coach. https://t.co/0J80hgwwEf

Rod Beard is Rico Beard's brother. It's like that movie Twins where Schwarzenegger was the specimen and DeVito was the side effect. Rod is so much better than Rico. When you consider his brother is a top 5 Sparty troll, yet he isnt, I usually am interested in what Rod has to say.

Yaklich, Washington, Juwan Howard, or Lavall Jordan would take Michigan back to the irrelevant Amaker days.

Warde needs to take advantage of the Michigan basketball track record and prestige that Beilien built.

They need a proven college head coach with a history of consistent winning.

Yaklich defense is the only reason we made the Title game last year

Yaklich defense is the reason Michigan basketball was a Top team and not a bubble team the last 2 years

Beileins offense has failed the last 2 years. Yaklich defense saved those seasons so why would that be a bad hire?

I don’t get how people think Juwan is a plausible candidate but also would say Yak doesn’t have enough experience. Porter Moser is the obvious Brady Hoke hire, but Howard is the lowkey Brady Hoke. Nostalgic hire because we associate him with nice times in Ann Arbor. Maybe in 5-10 years, but not right now

Howard has been an assistant coach in the NBA for quite a while now and is consistently in NBA coaching searches.

Howard also is a Fab 5 member, had a super long NBA career, and won a couple NBA titles (didn't do much, but has two rings nonetheless).

He's just a better draw than Yaklich when you factor in recruiting (which is a major part of coaching).

Did you actually read anything about Howard?  He's been one of the Heat's top assistants for the past 6 years.  He'll get a head coaching job in the NBA at some point in his career.  Hoke lasted 1 season as the Panthers' D-Line coach.  Howard is closer to 2007 Jim Harbaugh than Brady Hoke (and yes, I know there are problems with that comparison too).

I could fuck with this. Then we could pull what Memphis is doing right now and everybody would just say "man that Juwan is so cool and relatable and that's why Michigan suddenly bagged a top 3 recruiting class"

Count me in with the "level the playing field and just bag up" guys.  I'm as disgusted as anyone with the Bama's of the world in FB.  And Kentucky makes me wrinkle my nose, but it's so blatant in BB, and the NCAA has effectively ruled on it (sometimes silence speaks louder than words), that you almost have to in BB to be competitive. There's very few Beiliens our there that can succeed cleanly.  Almost as if forced into it by the dirty programs.  F me.  Bring on Pitino.

I love Juwan and think he'll be a great coach somewhere one day. But it would be an underwhelming hire. Michigan basketball has established itself as a terrific program and has clout. They should go all-in on a splash hire. This smells a lot like the "Michigan Man" qualification that was brought up in M football coaching searches. Yeah, it works when you hire a coach like Jim Harbaugh who had won big as a head coach in the NFL and in college football. But it could also go the way of Brady Hoke when they haven't proven it at the highest level. Michigan basketball isn't an up-an-coming program that should take chances. They need to get the big fish.

These threads suck!  Multiple and multiple people talking about who knows what about basketball and splash hires when multiple people on our board have probably NEVER played an organized game of basketball period.  And therefore they’re more or overly qualified to say,”Juwan would set us back to the Fred Flintstone era!”  Yeah right.

I think i'd definitely consider him as a second tier guy... i get that he's a bit more green than other guys being mentioned, but BBall is all about the Joes now, and not as much about the X and Os.

you can fill out your staff with guys that and help you transition to the college game, just like Beilein is going to do with his NBA staff, and you can hire coordinators like Yak was for Beilein to focus on what you are comfortable coaching

Howard is a legend and has been doing good work in the NBA when he easily could have called it a day with his two championship rings and the millions he made in a 2 decade long NBA career instead of grinding out as an NBA assistant coach.

that says something imo... whether he likes to recruit? depends if he's a people person... if you make Illinois as his main area, i could see him enjoying being around his old stomping ground

Has there been an assistant coach from the NBA with absolutely zero college coaching experience and zero head coaching experience become a college head coach and had any even marginal success??? I can’t think of a single one

Michigan? No please.

How about a coach with a long track record of winning.

Is Mark Few a realistic possibility?

Hope not. I really, really hope not. He's only ever been an assistant in the NBA. A good one, from what I've heard, but he's never coached in the college ranks. Would he want to come back here and recruit? Something he's never had to do? And then who's to say he wouldn't bolt back in a few years if the NBA came calling for him to be an HC?
