Josh Metellus and Jordan Glasgow: Possible SAM replacements if Peppers leaves?

Submitted by Brian Griese on

"This Josh Metellus, now, we're really excited about him," Michigan's defensive coordinator said Wednesday. "He can play safety and he can kind of be the poor man's Jabrill Peppers, too. He has to get a little bigger, maybe. But he can do a lot of the things (on defense) that we ask Jabrill to do."

"You know that Glasgow family? This Jordan Glasgow, I think we've found this guy a home (at SAM)," Brown said. "I think we have. We've kind of fooled around with him in it. We're going to be different at the safety position (next year), so I'm not sure if I want to take Josh and pull him out of there full-time and make him a viper. But wouldn't it be wonderful if this (Glasgow) continues to mature?"

I have a feeling st Juste will be getting a lot of early playing time next year. Physically he looks ready to contribute from day 1. It seems like next year has the most question marks at multiple positions than any team i can remember.

There are going to be surprises to be sure.  I sure was surprised by Chris Evans contribution to the team this past season.  One more hump to get over in terms of experience, and things should be a lot more predictable moving forward. We are still paying the price for Hoke's recruiting holes but not for too much longer.

I'm assuming some sort of Furbush/Hudson/Uche split.  Furbush more on running downs and against MSU/Wisconsin types.  Hudson most similar to Peppers and Uche similar to Hudson but with a little more LB.

I assumed Metullus would be more of the strong safety type with lots of run support.  Maybe Brown wants Hudson at the second safety position due to better man coverage ability (not that you don't need that at SAM).

I think Brown is going to have a blast with young multi-talented players like Hudson and Uche.

Sounds like McCray and Bush will start in the middle/WLB spots that play every down as the top two LBs.  I can see Furbush being both the SLB against MSU/Wisconsin and the back-up to McCray (MLB?) and maybe Bush.  In this capacity, he could get almost as many snaps as McCray and Bush assuming he is good enough to play a lot.

Does it kind of suck to be Furbush?  He's forever on hold for a heavy formation team that never seems to come.  And even if it does and he plays well in that game, it's back to the bench for Indiana or NW or whoever spread team.  Just move him to Mike and make that SAM spot a 4-2-5 thing.  Otherwise aren't we always going to need a guy like this?  But what the hell do I know

May be Ben Mason's role

No one on this blog has seem enough of either Bush or Furbush to make that determination.  But that's not even the point - he seems to be a utility player for the Wisconsins of the world, which M rarely sees anymore (and frankly he's not even playing against the Wisconsins).

Perhaps Peppers is too elite to ever take off the field, maybe his role changes after he leaves

I like how Brown says it like it is and says he can be used like a poor mans peppers instead of going full fred jackson and saying he's like peppers but better in coverage, faster, and better instincts.

Willie gay would also be a nice addition to this viper competition. It would be nice to get him so we can be more flexible with our schemes on the back end.

i really thought he could replace peppers.  he seems to have a nose for the football and isn't afraid to hit people.  however, it doesn't surprise me that glasgow could see some PT, but i thought it would be in a safety spot.

I feel like people are reading too much into these comments. sounds like Brown is saying they are trying to find the best role for these players, not that they are pushing for the opportunity to replace Peppers. He could be talking about them being 3rd or 4th string at the position next year.

My real takeaway from these comments is that the staff has been toying with guys at that spot starting the second half of the season to see how guys would shake out. What I find interesting is that there was no mention of Hudson. And that might be fine. I think if you actually step back and look at how both Hill and Peppers played this last year that Hill might have been more important and his spot might have been just as demanding in different ways. The Viper spot calls for the ability to deal with blocks from linemen and full backs while being an attacker and penetration. The Strong Safety spot calls for more coverage in the slot while make a lot of tackels in space on the edge. With that sad i think you have to look at the talents of Jordan, Hudson, Josh, JKP, etc... Seems that you might be able to hide any man coverage issue at SAM as long as that player can deal with blockers one way or another. At SS you actually probably need the batter football player which Hudson and JKP might be built for. Seems like a ton of options, will be a really interesting battle from spring to fall.

Glasgow and Metellus are quintessential strong safeties. Brown likes guys for SAM/Viper/whatever with more length and weight but still elite cover skills, a la Jamie Collins. Furbush began as the backup and worked his way back from injury to get more PT. Brown really likes Noah, too.
