Congrats to him.  I have been critical of him in the past but did think this whole year has been a revelation as an OC and glad he got the recognition.

Me too, both. His transformation from "that guy who is going to get Harbaugh fired" in my head to "damn that drive was impressive" makes me question what I know about football.

Either it took a bit of experience to get him to here, or I just had the wrong culprit for the massive disfunction on O the last 2 years.

Not necessarily an "either / or".   I don't think there can ever be a single culprit for a team-wide failure, especially in a game as complex as football with so many specialized skills, both on the field and off.  And it would take anyone time to learn those ins and outs.

Of one thing I'm certain, I know nothing about the game (unless it's explained to me UFR after the fact), expect to appreciate the good times, like now.

My thoughts exactly. We finally have a good game manager qb who can hit downfield throws, combined with a solid veteran OLine, experienced blocky catchy TEs, and strong inside and outside rushers, all at the same time. Gattis hands were somewhat tied with units in transition, the limitations with Patterson and Milton's arms, plus the SARSChaos2 season.

Congrats coach. If you move on to bigger and better things that’s all good you deserve it after working hard but in the meantime please stay focused on the playoffs. We can’t have a DJ Doughnut situation again like what happened against OSU. Again congrats coach.

I hope he doesn’t leave but Broyle’s Award winners don’t seem to stick around very long. I have absolutely no insider knowledge just seems like his stock is trending up and would make sense for him to strike while the iron is hot although he could really put up some great production next season with what we’ve got coming back and maybe get an even better gig.

I hope he doesn’t leave but Broyle’s Award winners don’t seem to stick around very long.

I had a similar gut reaction. Here's the history of the past 10 Broyles winners:

  • 2020
    • Winner: Steve Sarkisian (Alabama)
    • What happened the following year: Took a job as Texas HC.
  • 2019
    • Winner: Joe Brady (LSU)
    • What happened the following year: Took a job as Carolina Panthers OC.
  • 2018
    • Winner: Mike Locksley (Alabama)
    • What happened the following year: Took a job as Maryland HC.
  • 2017
    • Winner: Tony Elliott (Clemson)
    • What happened the following year: Still OC at Clemson.
  • 2016
    • Winner: Brent Venables (Clemson)
    • What happened the following year: Remained DC at Clemson. Just took HC job at Oklahoma.
  • 2015
    • Winner: Lincoln Riley (Oklahoma)
    • What happened the following year: Remained OC at OU. Took over HC job in 2017. Just took HC job at USC.
  • 2014
    • Winner: Tom Herman (OSU)
    • What happened the following year: Took HC job at Houston.
  • 2013
    • Winner: Pat Narduzzi (MSU)
    • What happened the following year: Remained with MSU for 1 year, then took HC job at Pitt.
  • 2012
    • Winner: Bob Diaco (ND)
    • What happened the following year: Remained at ND for 1 year, then took HC job at UConn. Bounced around after that, does not appear to be on staff anywhere.
  • 2011
    • Winner: John Chavis (LSU)
    • What happened the following year: Remained at LSU for a few more years. Bounced around after that, does not appear to be on staff anywhere.

There is certainly a more recent trend of Broyles winners jumping to new jobs, but I was actually surprised by the number of coaches who stayed with their schools after winning.

So happy for Gattis and the entire offensive staff. He's really come into his own the second half of the year and I'm looking forward to seeing what this offense evolves into going forward.

Definitely.  The development of the offense in the latter half of the season has been significant. We've seen a lot more dynamic play calling and execution than how things started in September.  The receivers, tight ends, and running backs are all doing much better.  And McNamara seems to be much more comfortable with the offense than earlier on.  Credit Gattis for a lot of this.

Devin Gardner has been doing a great job singing his praises all season on MMQB. He has been defending his play calling from the start. Good, wholesome holiday entertainment for the next few weeks if you haven't been watching!  All available on MeToob or whatever you kids call that site....

He deserved this - especially after all the crap he's received the previous 2 years!

I think he humbled himself a little during the offseason and asked for help with the running game.  The power run schemes are all Harbaugh - but it was Gattis that incorporated them with RPO's and with a 'speed in space' passing attack.  I've no doubt he had help early with play calling this run game, which is/was a foreign entity to him.  But he worked with it, and brought along Cade, JJ, and the WRs as he slowly integrated more and more.  It has really taken off the last half of the season.

Right now, the opposition has no idea where the ball is going to go on most plays.  Sometimes, it's pretty easy to see where, but the way it gets blocked opens a hole anyway.  And sometimes it's all a fake.  He's also become content with 4-6 yard gains, knowing that they open up everything else.

He has grown as an OC visibly, significantly, and demonstrably this year.  He EARNED this award.

Congratulations, Coach!!!

great point on being patient and having plays that set up other plays later in the game or a couple of games down the road like he did with Edwards in the passing game setting up OSU

well done and happy he is getting recognized

I really don't like to compare, because when you do someone always gets diminished *eyeroll*.

But to your point, all 3 coordinators have done an excellent job this year.  Coach Gattis gets the nod because he's done such a masterful job this year.  The only blemish on Coach Mac's record this year was not having our D prepared for the tempo MSU threw at us.  He was still adjusting from the Pro game.  And Special Teams, while special and can win games for you, are typically not quite as impactful as O and D.

The game plans Gattis implemented were at times better than our players' ability to execute.  We had receivers running open multiple times, many touchdowns left on the field per DG now of MMQB fame.  Yet we've been good enough to win, improved every week and are now the undisputed 2021 B1G Champions.

Stellar job by all the coaches and players.

Mattison getting passed over in his first season, when he took the players from RichRod's horrid defense and turned them into a great defense, was a travesty.

Of course, given his Ronin personality, it couldn't happen to a nicer guy. Oh look, I think another OSU defender got knocked down because one of their D linemen got shoved into him from their last game.
