Every time I hear "arm talent" I think of Drew Henson. Both guys had cannons, but Milton seems to throw with less effort. I'm choosing to enjoy him while we have him because if he shows up and shows out in our high profile games, that "arm talent" could rocket up NFL draft boards.
October 29th, 2020 at 7:51 PM ^
I always think of Shane Morris.
October 29th, 2020 at 10:59 PM ^
We never really got to see full Shane Morris, but if Milton puts it all together, he has the potential to be the best QB Michigan has ever had and that’s saying a lot. Size, strength, can move just enough.
October 29th, 2020 at 11:10 PM ^
Not meant to be a shot at Shane Morris, he was a pretty good QB at Central and got some FA interest in the NFL.. but if he had the substance he would have earned the job the year Ruddock transferred in. No doubt he had a very strong arm, but it seemed to be the other stuff that he couldn't master that kept him from the starting job.
In other words, if Milton and Morris were similar players DMC would still be here and starting at QB.
October 30th, 2020 at 12:16 PM ^
Naw. Drew was the 2nd coming of RL. He has a cannon of an arm.
October 29th, 2020 at 7:51 PM ^
As long as it isn't mlb draft boards
October 29th, 2020 at 9:24 PM ^
Whoa man. Drew was pretty smooth. I would slow your roll on that comparison just yet.
October 29th, 2020 at 9:46 PM ^
Drew is the most purely talented QB Michigan has ever had (while they were at Michigan).
October 29th, 2020 at 10:01 PM ^
I thought Milton's delivery was a bit quicker. Maybe I'm wrong. But I refuse to look at any footage of the 2000 season to verify. That was our best shot at a title in the BCS era.
If I would've known that would be the last time we'd win in Columbus for at least two decades, I might have savored the win a bit more.
October 30th, 2020 at 12:54 AM ^
Milton flips a rocket he just has to figure out how to put touch on the ball in certain situations.... especially throwing deep. You can't throw rockets deep most often.
October 29th, 2020 at 11:13 PM ^
Agreed. Henson was a pretty remarkable talent. It's easy to forget he was Vegas' odds on favorite to win the Heisman before he signed his contract with the Yankees.
He had an incredible Jr. year after coming off his injury. Would have loved to see what he could have done had he stayed.
October 30th, 2020 at 7:36 AM ^
This is a good recall - that 2000 season with Drew Henson and David Terrell was pretty impressive and he (Drew) really was set-up to have a monster season in 2001......but alas the Evil Steinbrenner thwarted those plans. Who knows if he WOULD have won the Heisman - but he certainly was projected to be heavily in the mix.

This is 100 times better and informative than the first Klatt post with a solid analysis.

A young Robbie Hummel.

Joel Klatt has been very high on Michigan for a couple of years now and realizes that Harbaugh has done a great job of elevating of the program, but also acknowledges that Ohio State has also taken a leap during that time, which is out of JH's control.
Overall, he's one of the best announcers/analysts in the game right now.
October 29th, 2020 at 8:39 PM ^
I kinda wish others would realize this as well. Harbaugh has elevated Michigan to a level that Michigan has always been in, outside of a very select few years.
For example, since 1975 (when Michigan began routinely playing 12+ games in a season) Michigan has won more than 10 games just 4 times. Bo did it once, Moeller didn’t do it, Carr did it twice (including a natty) and Hoke did it once. The fact is, Michigan is routinely a 9-10 win team. Period. It’s who we have always been. Harbaugh has returned us to that level.
Now a couple things have changed now compared to back then. Ohio State has improved leaps and bounds. They’re now a consistent top 5 team. You won’t see them limping into the Big House with a 7-4 record any time soon. The other major difference, is that it’s no longer the Big 2, little 8. Wisconsin and Penn State are now consistently top 20 teams. Minnesota and NW have shown the ability to knock out 10-11 wins here and there. MSU even went through a stretch of success. Point being, you can’t win the Big Ten with 3 losses anymore (something Carr did in every conference title season with the one very obvious exception)
Now obviously you’d hope we could elevate ourselves to the NEXT level. But it’s pretty asinine for people to criticize Harbaugh’s tenure and call for his job. Harbaugh has returned Michigan to its past glory, but the college football landscape is what’s changed.
October 29th, 2020 at 9:21 PM ^
Excellent points. I'd add that he's not done. I'm encouraged by Harbaugh's willingness to bring in new blood and try new things. Sure, it's frustrating to play second fiddle to OSU, but we have to remember 1) OSU is experiencing the greatest run in their program's history. 2) We've been a play here and a call there from (potentially) 2 Conference Championships/playoff appearances. It's easy to forget these things if we look at things from a 10,000 foot view.
October 29th, 2020 at 11:28 PM ^
+1, All of this commentary is correct. I think it's worth adding that to get into the next echelon of college football it takes an institutional commitment to do whatever it takes to win. Alabama, OSU, Clemson, Georgia, OU, LSU have all made that commitment. Michigan is not quite willing to go that far.
I think Harbaugh is doing about as well ask you can ask a coach to do, unless you're willing to put some slack on the leash in terms of recruiting football talent. Personally, I have no problem with it.
I also understand the powers that be in the Athletic Department and Board of Regents are not willing to get into the weeds with the bagmen for the majority of instant impact and program changing talent. So given the boundaries at his disposal, I think he's done about as much as anyone could given the circumstances.
Not saying he hasn't made decisions that can't be criticized, but I don't think Michigan can find a coach that could provide better results given the same set of circumstances.

I love Klatt doing games but Johnson just sucks. He’s the Frank Castanza Of commentating.
October 29th, 2020 at 9:26 PM ^
This guy...he’s not my kind of guy.
October 29th, 2020 at 10:47 PM ^
Any announcer that calls Staee “Little Brother”, like Gus did on a live broadcast, is alright with me!
October 29th, 2020 at 11:01 PM ^
You say it liken Frank Castanza is someone bad to be compared to.
October 29th, 2020 at 9:26 PM ^
I like Joel Klatt in general. He's replaced Herbie as the best announcer/analyst in cfb the last few years, as Herbie has gotten a bit lazy and comfortable with his position and fallen into hawt takes instead of analysis more recently.
Klatt does get a bit hyperbolic, though, with specific teams or players at time, but I guess this is necessary to stay interesting and relevant as a broadcaster.
His man crush on Chase Young is a bit absurd as he was still talking about the "best player in America" more than any player currently on OSU during the Nebraska game.
Chase Young:Joel Klatt :: Brett Favre:John Madden
Urban is both a football savant and satan incarnate...Trust not a word that comes out of his mouth when he compliments Michigan; He's literally game planning for Ryan Day as he watches and comments on UM film.
October 29th, 2020 at 10:43 PM ^
Agree with you on Herbie. He couldn’t be bothered to learn how to pronounce Filiaga’s name.
October 29th, 2020 at 11:31 PM ^
Did you mean Justin Fields?
October 30th, 2020 at 9:36 AM ^
A nitpick: OSU went 38-3 and won a national title in the three years before Harbaugh arrived here. They haven't so much taken the leap during Harbaugh's tenure as maintained the same level they've had since 2012.
October 29th, 2020 at 7:59 PM ^
Cool. Always like Klatt.
October 29th, 2020 at 8:12 PM ^
Klatt nailed the analysis, aside from barely mentioning the speedy guys. If they can keep the key pieces healthy, I think this ends up being Harbaugh's best offense at Michigan.
October 29th, 2020 at 9:43 PM ^
Nicely done!
But this is what we're really cooking up.
October 29th, 2020 at 8:38 PM ^
He does love Michigan and he definitely puts into this video why this season they look really good
October 29th, 2020 at 8:54 PM ^
Always been a bit of a Klatt fan; the pro-Michigan love definitely helps, haha...
He and Gus are my favorite tandem on Saturdays - Joel brings the facts while Johnson brings the SLAPS.
October 29th, 2020 at 9:09 PM ^
Great stuff. Thanks for posting.
October 29th, 2020 at 9:13 PM ^
Now this is someone I can get behind saying nice things about Michigan because Joel Klatt is a boss. Every time Meyer says something complimentary about Michigan it's immediately erased by the fact that he's still employed by OSU and insists on referring to them as "the Wolverines."
October 29th, 2020 at 11:08 PM ^
If you could share how you embed videos in an original post, I would be very pleased. I did some Google searching the first time I wrote a diary, but I couldn't figure it out.
October 30th, 2020 at 10:30 AM ^
Cool. Didn't realize on the long Charbonnet TD that Mason started out split out as a wide receiver.
October 30th, 2020 at 2:57 PM ^
I’m a big fan of Klatts and like watching these videos. But do have a minor quibble-Barrett isn’t a corner...
