Jim McElwain to Michigan as OC/WR Coach

Submitted by DJMich23 on
Per Sam Webb via Twitter. Still some ambiguity on his specific duties as the 10th assistant. Edit: Offensive Coordinator/Wr Coach (Per UMbig11.)

I don't think that was just the right side. And there is no excuse for that.

Go look at Rudock highlights compared to Speight. The biggest difference is Rudock would get rid of the ball quick consistently. Speight not so much, and also Speight never threw check downs to his RB despite early pressure. A QB with these tendencies will make your poor OL look even worse then it is. Very bad combo.

We have an experienced successful OC on our staff. This limits the influence Pep can have on the offense. Florida under McElwain with Grier were an exciting offense and Shea is of the same mold. This is a great hire.

That’s good news. I think he is a pretty damn good oc and a decent hc that had a few bad breaks at Florida to make him look worse than decent. Im honestly just happy to see the OC responsibilities move to someone new.

And had his best wr suspended. Bro in law is a UF alum so I watched most of their games. They were a lot better than people thought. He fucked up hiring nuss. Once he took over playcalling they did a lot better

I like this, it shows harbaugh is truly doing what it takes to win. Making a change from a predictable offense, to someone he's never worked with who can add to his playbook is huge. I never liked having everyone thinking the exact same thing, defenses can catch quickly to that. But if he's truly the OC I don't quite understand Enos leaving? Could harbaugh not offer him the OC when bama called? The Toledo OC, he withdrew his name and there's no way he turned down our OC, we must have only offered WR job. So I don't get missing Toledo OC and Enos but offer mcelwain the job.

Honestly, this isn't a bad hire. At the end of the day, it's Jim Harbaugh's offense and will as long as he's here. Maybe Jim M can help contribute to it in a positive way. As UMbig says below - expect more of the same (schematically)

I like/respect UMBig11, but he’s been wrong a lot lately.

I’ll wait til the official announcement comes. But he’d be an upgrade calling plays over Drevno.

And Drevno solely coaching the OL with advice from Warinner would be make me so excited for the season.

Piecing together things from multiple sites, I read Harbaugh chooses if the next play will be run or pass. Both the run coordinator and pass coordinator have a play ready and relay it to Harbaugh. Then Harbaugh has final say to go with the play relayed to him or change it. Has there ever been real confirmation this is how our offense runs or is this more internet hearsay?

1) It would never work

2) The OC would then have no say in the playcalling

3) If Harbaugh didn't like the one play he got form the one guy, there is no way there would be time to change it through another go-around.

4) It gives zero ability to have continuity and game plan - i.e. setting up a play in the 4th quarter by a formation/playcall in the first quarter.

When Harbaugh, Pep, and Drevno were all in on playcalling how do you think it went down? Somehow all their hands were in the cookie jar at the same time for playcalling.

Again, I just tied stuff together I read from a few different blogs. I have no legit knowledge on how they do it.

I’m really pleased with Harbaugh here. It’s a bold move to demote two guys in order to solve the problem. I trust that Harbaugh gave a lot of consideration over this. I think it will pay off. We have too much coaching talent to fail.

Personally, I think it would have been a better move to fire them. They're basically getting a participation trophy in this scenario and that's not a meritocracy. ** JH knows who owns this offense and because of that he's probably hesitant to throw a guy (or two) under the bus.

To address a situation especially in football, sometimes you just move people around and they'll move on on thier own.

If you get the reputation as a hatchet man everyone will fear you and you are less likely to attract great candidates because they might not want to risk thier career on your organizations lack of tolerance for risk.

That being said I think Drevno and Pep have been 'reassigned' so that they can move on without losing face..

My inside source said Harbaugh missing on the Greg Roman hire was the only reason he kept him around. Bringing Ed Warnier onboard is the insurance policy for when it comes time for Harbaugh and Drevno to part ways.

Patchwork offensive staff. Same old process. They no longer are worthy of blind faith. I’m against this approach and don’t have confidence in it until it produces results- for multiple years.

Your against the offensive approach that Harbaugh has used to win conference championships at UCSD; and to make Stanford into constant in the Top 20; and to turn a craptastic NFL team into an NFC Champion with a narrow loss in the Super Bowl?  Because the same approach he's been using at Michigan is the same approach he's been using for his entire coaching career.

Had another quick thought. McElwain probably sees Michigan as a good opportunity to clean up his image and perhaps learn a thing or two about how to run a disciplined program. He undoubtedly will say in his future interviews that he resolved those issues at Michigan.

And I also get the feeling that Harbaugh might be waiting to see if draino can fix the oline, and if he can’t then he’ll be booted and in comes warinner. And btw if you have been keeping up with recruiting in-state, it seems like Pep is really putting in the work to get Belleville and also the DMV back into play. Draino on the other hand, has only one guy who’s in the mix in Calvin Anderson. If he blows that one, he might be out the door. I don’t think draino has much more job security and I think jimmy realizes who the real problem is.
