Hoke Chimes In and Would Not Have Punted

Okay, you guys are sick of seeing MSU threads, chew on this one.

Personally, if we have the No. 1 defense in the nation I'm going to test those guys," Hoke said. "You've got to play to the strength of your football team and the strength of the Michigan football team all year long has been their defense." He said he was sure "Jimmy" went over what he wanted to do and how he wanted to do it but Hoke said there are too many potential breakdowns on a punt. "No. 1, I think the one gunner to the field should have been in a little bit more and if you're going to punt it there's ways to protect it a little better," Hoke said. Hoke first credited the MSU defense for forcing fourth down and said he would have gone for it at that point, handing the ball to De'Veon Smith and "challenge your offensive line" or play-action pass to take four to five seconds off the clock.

He says he would have played to the strength of the team? Then says he would have handed the ball off and challenged his offensive line. So he is saying he would have gone with the weakness of this team, right? He's just being a butt hurt guy.

The only thing I wish we would've done differently on downs 1 through 3 is attempt a short, high percentage rollout pass play to the TE or FB.  Something like that may have caught MSU by surprise and perhaps picked up a first down.  Other than that I think Harbaugh played the last series correctly.

When 4th down rolls around you almost have to punt in that situation.  I guess your other option is to shotgun snap to the QB who runs backwards and chucks it as far as he can and hope that that play takes at least 10 seconds.

Main question: why do we have the no. 1 defense? Don't get me wrong, Coach Hoke had good defenses, but I'm sorry... They would not be top-10 without this coaching staff. They wouldn't have 1 shutout, let alone 3. Brady, I really think should have shut his mouth, said something like "I support what coach Harbaugh did"

Asking Hoke for advice on special teams strategy is like asking Matt Millen for drafting advice. Punting was the right call, if you can bear to watch the replay you see that Blake had plenty of room on the right to punt if he catches it clean. That's a 1 in 50 year play.

Absolutely stunning that garbage came out of his pie hole. I know he's on XM radio as a college football um, "expert" and has to have hot takes. But that's ridiculous.

"See I wouldn't have done something that we know didn't work. I would have done something else." Someone queue up the Captain Hindsight picture.

I do wish we would have run a sweep or two though since those tend to take more time. And I have to admit that on fourth down I was thinking I would like to see the pooch punt by the QB. Never seen one of those get blocked before and QBs have a much better idea what to do with bad snaps. I also think there is some validity to going play action bomb in that situation. At worst you leave them a Hail Mary attempt with two seconds on the clock. If you throw it high enough you might get all ten seconds even with an incompletion.

But what's done is done. Have to make the most of what's left of the season and try to ruin OSUs perfect season. And also hope that Sparty pays back the massive karma they owe by blowing a game. Probably PSU since Hack can in theory go deep.

I would have gone for it as well. 5 WR, run verticals, get a TD and then go for 2 on my way to the national championship. NCAA Football really needs to get back on to the market.

If I was playing NCAA 14, I would call a play-action rollout and chuck it downfield to the receiver who is the most covered. Chances are it will get intercepted, making it essentially a punt or if my receiver gets it even better. But in real life players have brains and the best thing to do when you have one of the best special teams in the country is to punt.

Hindsight and all that.

I mean if I were coach I would have changed the play on a game deciding 2 pt conversion after OSU called a timeout and set up a defense for that specific play ...

But that's none of my business

Had Hoke coached, it would have been 30-3 (maybe 0), MSU. Finally, after his cute chubby smirk while clapping near the end of the game explanation to the loss, clearly, was the team didn't execute.

That's ridiculous, you punt that 10/10, no questions.... If I have run gripe it's was running smith on 3rd down, run a 1 man TE route, with a bootleg and give Rudock a run or pass option and only throw if he's wide open which I'm guessing he would have been. After the hard PA inside both options would have been open

You know what? Fuck him. I've always said kind words about the man and his character, but it's just obnoxious for him to come along after that and publicly second guess his successor. It's not even respectful to the team, because it implies (wrongly, obvs) we might have won but for the coaching change. On this issue, he can piss off.

I have thought about possibly going out with a hard count set up in I form. If they don't jump then it's a delay of game which means nothing. If they do then you just won the game. It would be simple to tell the offense. "Don't move, no matter what."
