Historical Fun Facts on yesterday's win

Submitted by Vasav on October 16th, 2022 at 1:27 PM

-As mentioned during the broadcast, this is the first time M went 7-0 in back to back seasons since 1973-74. In both of those seasons, M won their first ten games, and then failed to defeat OSU (infamous tie in 1973, loss in 1974)

-They had also started 10-0 in 1971-72, going 11-0 after beating OSU in '71 before losing the Rose Bowl to Stanford. Additionally, they went 9-0 in 1970 before losing to OSU to close the season. Five straight seasons of starting 9-0 after the epic 1969 win, but going 1-3-1 against the Buckeyes over that same time. What a time.

-This is Harbaugh's 3rd season to start 7-0, the first being 2016, where we went 9-0 before losing to Iowa

-This is also Harbaugh's 4th win over a top-10 team at Michigan (2016 Wiscy, 2019 ND, 2021 OSU). The 3 previous teams all finished in the top-15. For comparison, Brian Kelly had 4 wins over top-10 teams in his 12 seasons at ND, only 2 of those finished the season ranked. Ryan Day has 6 wins over top 10 teams in 3.5 seasons, including this year's opener against ND. Mark Dantonio had 9 in 13 seasons. James Franklin has 2, both in 2016.

That's all I've got. Feel free to share more

No, not without that play + having Joe Moorhead for a few seasons.  He's a .500 coach on the road and 11-13 in his last 24 Big 10 games, and 5-8 in his last 13 Big 10 road games.  He also has an atrocious ATS record (like 5-20ish, don't remember exactly) after a straight up loss, so be prepared to look at Minnesota +6

James Franklin is now 3-7 straight up after bye weeks.  (I heard some PSU fans complaining he focuses too much on recruiting during the bye.)

Harbaugh is now 40-0 in front of fans at Michigan Stadium vs teams not named OSU/MSU.  His teams have outscored Franklin teams 132-34 in those 3 such games.

That was my favorite moment at the game.

random but I thought DJ Ske was poor at best. Couldn’t get a beat to drop, nor get the crowd energized.

also, the speakers at the big house were either insanely loud or super quiet as if half the stadium was off. Very strange.

lasy observation from the game, Fuck Urban Meyer

I agree we thought he was pretty uninspiring. His attempts to engage the crowd were not working. He was great during the OSU game with the pump up. But I will say the fans were awesome and loud all game. Great environment. Probably don't even need DJ skee or whatever his name is.

I still believe we beat OSU in 1974. The field goal looked good to me and to Joe Paterno who was doing color in the booth that day. I can't blame the officials, though, who would probably have been torn to shreds had they call it a 3-pointer and a Michigan win.

Wow! I hadn't heard that before. I was on pins and needles remembering what had happened the year before, but Lantry hit it well. The '72, '73, '74, and '75 stretch of games nearly killed me. Thankfully, I was young enough to recover. The '72 game displayed just how stubborn Bo could be. He refused to kick a field goal and OSU stopped us at the goal line three times. We lost 14-11. And a tie would have sent us to Pasadena...

Good post. Can I ask for help going in another direction? How does our 418 yards rank for team rushing totals this season -- or in recent seasons? I looked for quite a while but couldn't find that kind of data.

"Michigan’s 418 yards rushing are its most in a game since 481 against Rutgers in a 78-0 win on the road in 2016. The total is the third-most rushing yards PSU has ever allowed and the most since 2000. Adjusting for sacks, the Wolverines ran for 423 yards on the day.

For reference, Penn State brought the nation’s fifth-ranked run defense into the game. It had allowed 399 rush yards *total* so far this year."

We also gave Penn State a Rutger of a sort:

The 418 net rushing yards that we put up...MORE than doubled the aggregate TOTAL that PSU had allowed to all other opponents COMBINED this year.

There's a reason they were a top 5 rush defense.
