Here's Jim Tressel's Application To Be U. Of Akron President

Submitted by Cold War on

Akron's president will step down this summer. Among the 19 candidates under consideration is Jim Tressel, the only one without a doctorate.

That lack of degree, and the show-cause penalty that is hanging over his head until 2016 thanks to the NCAA's Ohio State crackdown, surfaced as a roadblock when Tressel was linked to the Youngstown State presidency last year. But he's serious about this one. Akron has made public the applications of all 19 candidates. Tressel's can be found here, and we've embedded below...

they don't redact the address or home/mobile numbers of Tressel or any of the other applicants for that matter. I can only imagine the texts/call Hoke or someone from Michigan would get if their number was published.

And if I'm being honest with myself, Tressel will likely get some calls/texts made in poor taste from the lowest of the Michigan fanbase. EVery fanbase has them I suppose....

He is one of 19 candidates, I believe, and indeed the Plain Dealer lists them here - LINK

Among those applying are the former dean of Akron's law school, a former Boston University provost, a director from Akron Children's Hospital, a former school President, several deans, and various department heads. I have to think that, among the available candidates, the selection of Jim Tressel would be....intriguing, if nothing else.

That's some bad punctuation in the last sentence of his first paragraph. I see serial commas missing as well. Oops. I see a period after quotation marks. Not hired.

is just a part of the sentence. If it's only part of the sentence, then, IMO, the period should designate the end of the containing sentence unit.

That is considered proper syntax in England, and I agree.

The American syntax of

    She said, "Hurry up."

makes about as much sense as a markup syntax that considered

    She said, "Hurry up."

to be proper.

Note: I didn't bother to click on Tressel's application for fear of malware.

"Three Fiesta Bowl Championships/One Rose Bowl Championship/One Sugar Bowl Championship."

I won't even go into how the "One Sugar Bowl Championship" is actually zero Sugar Bowl Championships per the NCAA. Entries like that just look so out of place and silly when applying to be the president of a university. Also, I'm pretty sure you aren't supposed to use backslashes when applying for a job that prestigious.

And he can host home tattoo parties for fundraisders.

He forgot to mention his OSU team ended up on probation. I guess that's not important.

University president is basically chief fund raiser anyway. Provosts handle academic admin. The thing that should be an issue is lack of integrity, not lack of PhD.

For better or worse, there is a lot of truth in what you say. University presidents primarily do fundraising these days. The integrity issue is a huge one to overcome. There is also the fact that the university would take a hit in its academic reputation by taking on a former football coach without a Ph.D. as President. Whether that indivdiual was effective or not as president wouldn't matter to many, it would still have a negative impact on the university reputation.

The academic dishonesty thing is a problem, however in this day and age of higer education, where stae and federal funding is being cut, and it is becoming more and more competitive attracting quality students, fundraising has become so important. Considering those Ohio bimbos consider Tressel a god, they would probablly fundraise a boat load of money.

The most impressive thing about that resume is that he actually has kept track of all those random lectures he's given. Highlights include Delta Gamma sorority, a local library, JoAnne Fabrics leadership seminar, and a poetry reading. I struggled to remember about 10 experiences for my CV.

I hate to say this, but the dude was successful. He has succeeded in just about everything he has done. There is something to be said for that vs. a PhD. How relevent will most of those PhDs be anyway? He can lead. Who knows what else he can do? I don't find his application as absurd as most here do.

When you get what you want in your struggle for self,

And the world makes you King for a day,

Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,

And see what that guy has to say.

For it isn't your Father, or Mother, or Wife,

Who judgement upon you must pass.

The feller whose verdict counts most in your life

Is the guy staring back from the glass.

He's the feller to please, never mind all the rest,

For he's with you clear up to the end,

And you've passed your most dangerous, difficult test

If the guy in the glass is your friend.

You may be like Jack Horner and "chisel" a plum,

And think you're a wonderful guy,

But the man in the glass says you're only a bum

If you can't look him straight in the eye.

You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,

And get pats on the back as you pass,

But your final reward will be heartaches and tears

If you've cheated the guy in the glass.

If I may, let me suggest that if you are "successful" by CHEATING, it doesn't count. He admitted that he cheated in such an egregious fashion he's not allowed to coach in the NCAA for the next two years. How in the world would anyone seriously consider him for a job that requires him to provide ethical oversight of an NCAA athletic program?! Talk about the mouse guarding the cheese! Ohio University would be a laughing stock if they hired this specimen. They'd be the instant poster child for everything that is wrong with colleges and sports. No pact with Satan level of "success" can outweigh the stigma.

There is a reason why people like to say Phd stands for Piled Higher & Deeper. Some Phd's are legit and actually do make a contribution to society but in general, a Phd doen't equate to being able to lead or make good decisions. All it states is that you know how to do in depth research and analyze those particular data set you collected.

Hmm. The only reason anyone would discuss the Akron president candidate search is because Jim Tressel is applying. I think that's the reason he gets hired. I think it also would help facilitate the hiring of other famous people as university presidents. For example, clearly JayZ is more than qualified to be president of an Ivy League institution. He's a business, man.

I see a guy who is almost 100% delusional in even applying for this job. Hard to see how any legitimate educational institution could seriously consider this. Unless it was a place so nearly out of business that they are looking to throw a Hail Mary publicity play, this would make a college/university a laughingstock. Hell, even without the scandal, the guy was a FOOTBALL COACH.

Waters Demos

March 22nd, 2014 at 8:40 AM ^

What I don't see in his CV is that - per Mr. Gee - as football coach, Tressel ran the entire athletic dep't, and likely also the entire university at OSU. It's hard to know what the limits of Tressel's authority were at OSU, and he really should exploit that in his application.

Waters Demos

I don't know - it may be part of ordinary formal duties for coaches across the country, including B1G coaches. Notwithstanding, however, in Tressel's case it comes with particularly cynical implications.

How much power would any institution want to give this guy? He plays the part so well, and reaches his tentacles out so far that you could never be sure whose duties are being carried out by whom.

For what it's worth, you mentioned Tressell being in consideration for the Youngstown State President last year. Well, the guy they picked (Randy Dunn) is already gone, as he left to become the President at Southern Illinois. Tressell is again being considered at YSU, and many local businessmen and even our district congressman have openly supported bringing in Tressell to become the YSU President

The idea that this kind of application would be taken seriously in any corner of the academy is simply laughable. Just hilarious. What a joke if Akron (or Youngstown State) even gives this guy a modicum of consideration.

I can't believe that no one has pointed out that he lists having sung "take me out to the ball game" at a Cubs game on his CV under "Lectures and Presentations."

For having a multi-million dollar bankroll and staff assuredly drafting his every missive, that's a crap resume. Who writes "Curriculum Vitae" to start an obvious CV? Next time I post, I'll start it with "Post" just so as not to confuse anyone. Also, doesn't he know you're supposed to have two pages maximum? (!)

His letters & strategic, two-phase "vision" for UA are a disconcerting mix of consulting buzz words and self-importance. I'm pretty sure his pitch was "hire me to make hideous PR moves like firings and slashing budgets...then profit."

Actually, that might make hiring him so crazy it's genius. Intentionally hire a scapegoat. Make him do dirty work. Punt him unceremoniously. Profit.
