Gus Johnson "Back to School" show
I hope you guys were able to watch the "Back to School" show with Gus Johnson. Or rather about Gus Johnson. There is so much I didn't know about that man. They featured a game at Michigan and I almost cried with his words. I was never a Gus Johnson fan before this because I didn't understand lots of things including the "world famous" Ohio state phrase. But that is an ode to a very famous Olympic athlete that you all know or have heard about. Jesse Johnson. It has nothing to do with things currently. I hope you had the opportunity to watch it.

Jesse Owens.
how could I watch this show?
February 18th, 2023 at 9:35 PM ^
Yes. Thank You! Wife came through the door when I was correcting the name and never got it done. "Why are you texting when you haven't seen me all day?" Uh, sorry honey, on the blog. "Get off the phone". Ok.

For the younger crowd, Jesse Johnson was a damn fine RB back in the early 90's. Dude was really hard to tackle and a lot of fun to watch.

Aw, you got me wondering what Olympic sport Jesse “House Cat” Johnson had played.

The world needs more guys like Gus.
February 18th, 2023 at 8:06 PM ^
Gus is the man. Nearly all of my favorite TD calls are from him. Iconic.

It was a great show. Love Gus. He is the voice of a big game.

Go Green. Go Blue.

O JA BO!

Gus Johnson is one of those guys where you could listen to his calls forever.
In games that your team wins.
In games that they lose…..you’re not sure you ever want to listen to it again. Gus had plenty of calls in the 2021 MSU game that I think I’d cringe and shrivel up if I ever had to listen to them again. Not his fault, but with the energy and passion he brings to the calls, it’s equally as deflating when you’re on the wrong end of it.
Its like how I’m sure USC fans feel whenever they hear “4th and 5 the national championship on the line” from Keith Jackson. It’s euphoric for Texas fans, and hell-inducing for USC fans.

The best since Keith Jackson imo
February 18th, 2023 at 10:32 PM ^
The two of them should do The Game together next year.
February 18th, 2023 at 11:01 PM ^
Great idea. Anyone know what Keith is up to these days? I haven’t heard anything about him on here in awhile.
February 18th, 2023 at 11:51 PM ^
He passed away in 2018. Keith has always been my #1 voice of college football. "WHOAAAAAAA NELLLYYY" and "Goodbye......Helloooooo Heisman!" ftw.

I didn't see the show. I didn't know about the Jesse Owens reference. Can anyone explain the story?
February 18th, 2023 at 10:30 PM ^
When he calls Ohio State "World Famous", it is in reference to Jesse Owens at the Olympics. It is not about anything current.
February 18th, 2023 at 11:38 PM ^
And yet one can know that Jesse Owens went to Ohio State, and not have any idea that's what Gus is referencing.
Admittedly, I'm not a Gus guy to begin with, but if you have to explain it even to people who know the story...

My great uncle competed against Jesse during his record breaking day at the BTC. I’ve heard the stories from someone who was there, and his brother, my grandpa. I still don’t know what the “World Famous” refers to but I’m guessing it has something to do with how famous Jesse was in his day setting records and showing up Hitler.
The Gus Johnson thing sounds interesting.

It’s still a reach. Yes, Owens is famous, but how many people know where he went to school?
February 18th, 2023 at 10:40 PM ^
Glad more people know why he says this. Shouldn’t matter though, people should be better to not be Gus Johnson fans before they find this out. He’s human.

Gus Johnson does sports play-by-play for a living.
Broadcasting should be fun. It should be entertainment.
Gus Johnson is fun and entertaining.
Gus Johnson is good at sports play-by-play.
...it's really that simple for me. People who get pissed at "world famous" and the nicknames are taking something seriously that doesn't need to be taken seriously.
If you don't like it, the mute button was invented in 1956. Every TV has one.
Gus Johnson doing the news after a national tragedy, maybe that is not a good choice. Gus Johnson for a basketball or football game...the best.
February 19th, 2023 at 12:30 AM ^
It needs to stop. If things like this are allowed to continue it can only lead to an announcer talking about Valhalla and blowing horns.
February 19th, 2023 at 8:15 AM ^
As a second generation, very frequent user of the mute button. I am pleased to learn a little of its history.
My Dad famously muted every commercial for a while growing up. But he would also sometimes walk to the kitchen to get a snack and forget to set the remote down. So we stayed on mute way longer than a commercial break and I would have to run in there and grab it.

Sorry Doc. I posted while it was still airing. I'm sure it can be found somewhere on You Tube. I hope so.

"I'm a Wolverine. Period"
^ That was from 2017.

Going 13-0 this fall was amazing, but the icing on that cake was having Gus and Joel on the call for the majority of those games. We were really spoiled to have Gus be essentially the voice of Michigan football in 2022.

Gus Johnson is the Man! I hate he is with Fox only because he doesn’t get to do March Madness games.
