Also

Harbaugh said Jabrill Peppers who is "working through something" has been practicing. He didn't give up much on Peppers though

Honestly I am more interested in the Jones news. Having a real ILB would take this defense to another level. If Jones can be 6-4, 240 I think that would really impact the future of this team.

We also need a future BUCK. I am hoping that moving him around means they think he can play and want to find a way to get him on the field next year. Still this is the time of year to get reps and take a look at guys. It doesn't mean much of anything but the Jones news has me interested.

I mean he is a recruit... I don't care if it is Bush or Jones but I like hearing the news about Jones... But on the surface I know it might not mean anything. None of these guys are playing in the next game. However, if all things were equal I love the size of Jones over Bush. I'm sure you probably agree with the size comment.

We have 5-6 guys that can potentially play that role moving forward.

LB, as you started with...is much more of a concern. We don't even have bodies there.

BUCK is one spot and we have Charlton, Jones, Marshall, S. Johnson, R. Johnson and Kemp. Some of these guys will get too big and go to SDE...but Mattison will find at least 2 of these 6 to play BUCK. That's not even a question, IMO.

At LB we don't even have "DUDES" right now.

Yea I agree. We are on the same page but of course who knows if any of those guys can play Buck but I really thinkg we agree.

Side note... Do we still play a buck/rush LB next year?

Anyway, I think the concerns are almost equal but there are clearly more possible answers at Buck than at ILB. I would love it if Jones proved he could play ILB and somone else plays Buck at a high level... I'd love it to be Taco actually because I think his snaps could be limited dealing with Wormley and Henry at the other DE spot... Actually I'd love it if he played both spots the same way a lot of other DL are playing the DE/DT/NT spots... Plus maybe Gary pushes him to Buck as well.... I like all the mixing and matching I can see in my head. Miss coaching defense just for this reason.

Next year, who knows...because we can't run a 3-4 with what we have.

But down the road...Don "Doc" Brown runs a 3-4 with a hybrid WDE/SLB. Basically a rush LB with a hand in the ground.

So that's close to a BUCK. But I don't know if that position generally blitzes/rushes all the time like ours does now. If they're planning on dropping the position into coverage, I'd hope they'd start recruiting tall, long, big, LBs that can hold up to the run, but drop into coverage.

In the meantime, we've got a bunch of undersized DEs. None of the guys I mentioned are LBs, IMO.

Thanks for the info on Brown.

I think if you are just rushing and playing the run I'd really like to see Taco.

None of them have shown they can play LB but I am hoping that what they have seen made them think it was worth a try. It is clearly a need so you move guys around and see who fits.

Everyone calm down. I'm sure Harbaugh knows better than we do what positions each player should be at. If he thinks that Gentry would be better at TE then we should trust him that he is making the best possible decision for the team.

Wasn't the possibility of Gentry at TE something that was discussed - however unlikely it may have been thought to be at the time - from basically the beginning with him though? If it is in bowl practice, then I sort of wonder if this is enough by itself to portend the future Gentry - it is rather interesting all the same though. Probably just the staff seeing what they might be able to get away with, seeing who might fit in where potentially.

This has been discussed and we knew it would be a possibility. Gentry put up big numbers at QB in New Mexico. He could still wind up there, he could also be an All American TE. Let's wait and see. Put the best players on the field. Harbaugh knows what he's doing.

It wouldn't do much for him to rep at qb for bowl practice, why not put him at TE just to see what you have? I wouldn't put too much into this. I'm not saying I'm against it, but he's here to play Qb. Maybe if he realizes that isn't ever going to happen, then maybe...

With Harbaugh as coach, it takes away a lot of room to speculate.  Gentry to TE?  Harbaugh knows best.  Wheatley Jr. to DL?  Harbaugh knows best.  Wheatley Senior to tailback?  He must have eligibility left, 30 years and 50 pounds have made him faster, Harbaugh knows best.

Gentry might just be the one asking to rep at TE. Harbaugh has a reputation for developing great TEs and there's a shortage of TEs on the current roster. If he can see the field at TE next year, that's better than not seeing the field as a 3rd or 4th string Qb. Plus, Harbaugh could use him on a trick play or two to throw the ball.

I trust Harbaugh to put these kids in a position where they will maximize their abilities and thus help the team win games. I am looking forward to seeing Gentry and Wheatley on the field, wherever they end up.

If there's a lot of silly stuff being said in this particular thread, or it's just that the neg-meisters are deeply affected by the Solstace, but hell, sure is a lot of down-voting going on around here this evening.

Having said that, and obviously not having read much, and being here in Albuquerque, I am damned happy the guy is taking reps at TE. He's too damned talented to become buried in the QB depth chart, and if there's really a shot I would think he'd be a priority for JH at that position, anyway.

I'll admit, I wouldhave liked to see him at QB, but I'm okay with multitasking players, especially if he can put up Jake Butt type numbers under Shane, O'Korn, or Peters. Hell, doing some Braxtonesque trickery where he gets to rep at QB on occasion would be a lot of fun to see. We saw this kinda work with the Devin/Denard combos (going both ways), and with Harbaugh, it could be a lot of fun.
