Michigan DC D.J. Durkin ready to sign deal with Maryland. Will meet with MD officials on Monday. http://ajerseyguy.com

Take this with a grain of salt I guess

Wasn't he offered the DC at TAMU?  He had inroads to SEC teams yet waited on Harbaugh to hire him here.  Hard to believe he would go to Maryland after his previous stops and potential HC access to SEC teams

It was all his fault Rich Rodriguez's defense was so bad in 2008!    /obvious s

He was the first name that came to mind when hearing the rumblings about Durkin to MD.  He's had some great defenses, coached with Harbaugh at Stanford in the same capacity, and seems to have earned his respect!  If Durkin does sign with Maryland on Monday, how long does it take Harbaugh to name a replacement?  If Shafer, probably pretty soon!

Grain of salt indeed. I saw that tweet and when you click on his name he doesn't have a description or anything. Once Michigan insiders start reporting the same then I will believe it.

1st off, I thought Maryland wanted an offensive guy, 2nd I feel like maybe DJ could have stayed another year or 2 and potentially get a ring on his resume' but if this is true I say whatever, they'll be guys clamoring for that position.

Very happy with his contributions to Michigan. Hope he is successful at Maryland. But I'm decidedly less upset than I would have been a week ago. Harbaugh will find a very capable replacement.

I cant help but feel like he checked out on us in prepping for OSU. The defense was a mess after taking care of business all year. Yeah i know OSU has amazing talent, but the defensive gameplan seemed to leave a lot to be desired.

I'm all for our assistant coaches moving up and on and extending the Michigan coaching tree.

However, I do not like the fact that he interviewed during the season, let alone during the week of The Game. That bothers me a lot.

The team should compete for a NC next year. I'd have thought he'd stick around for a chance at a ring. A one year stint is a little surprising, if true. I guess Maryland is a pretty good first job as HC though.

Well.. If you want to be a jerk about it... Technically we competed for a playoff spot up to the final game and would have been that much closer if the Sparty crap wouldn't have happened; THIS ALL IN YEAR ONE OF HARBAUGH AFTER A FIVE WIN SEASON. Given that fact, I don't see why it would be such a far cry to assume Michigan will at the very least compete for a playoff spot next season as well, which also means they will be competing for the national championship game; one does not compete for the playoffs if one is not also competing for a national championship. Doesn't mean we will win the national championship, but we will still be competing for that shot.

Michigan's going to be starting a new QB, but very likely someone who's got starting experience (O'Korn).  There is also going to be a couple big question marks at linebacker.

But there's a very good chance UM goes into East Lansing on October 29th with a 7-0 record.

Now, can they win at MSU, Iowa, AND OSU?  Tough hill to climb.  But if they can win in East Lansing to get to 8-0, they'll almost assuredly be a top 6 team.  Big "if" though.

Does this weaken any of our chances with recruits (committed or not)? Durkin is a great recruiter and a definite loss. Was really hoping he'd stick around for a couple years.

well, it was worth a shot anyway.

we'll find someone worthy.  its all going to work out.   and we're going to have a fine season next year starting with a surprise or two on/around signing day.

Just because you read something on the internet, doesn't mean it's true. I'm a little disappointed in some of you for jumping on this like you heard it from credible sources.

As a counter, read basically every reporter during the Harbaugh signing that said it was impossible. I mean, Michael Rosenberg would be considered a football reporter on some circles and he basically made up a whole story. I'm sure MD reached out, but this feels more and more like crappy negotiations at MD than anything concrete.

I am guessing Maryland drew from the Under Armour bank account when making this hire so good for Durking if true. Always good to have your coaching tree grow.

As for Michigan, I am not worried. With so much coaching staff turnover this season nationally, I think Harbaugh won't have much trouble finding a DC with the money Michigan is paying coordinators and the veteran defense that is returning. It seems like it would be a prime job opportunity.

If you have a successful program your head coach wlll build a coaching tree.  We want the types of assistant coaches who have the gravitas to become head coaches some day.  If Durkin gets the job congratulations to him and to Harbaugh.  Can't fault Durkin for wanting to move to the next level.

I wish he could have stayed here a couple more years before moving on for the sake of continuity. Really like the guy. Very smart guy.
