Don Brown targeted by Ryan Day/OSU?

Submitted by The Fugitive on April 29th, 2019 at 1:33 PM

Maybe this is old news and I live under a rock, but on WTKA this morning Sam Webb strongly alluded to Ryan Day attempting to hire Don Brown away from Michigan and instead ended up with Greg Mattison. Apparently they worked together and there was obviously some familiarity based on how their offense dissected the Michigan defense. Was this known or did Sam shed some new info on this situation?

Segment 7, around 9:30 in or just listen to the whole doggone thing.

On mobile. Hoping this isn't a catastrophe.  Link to audi in WTKA if the embed doesn't work.

love this thought

Those jerk offs wanted to go for the jugular after that whooping they handed us (sigh)...went for big dog DB and he said kick rocks

So you end up going with a 70+ CO dcoordinator who has maybe a year left just to stick it to M? Cant be because they think he is the guy for the role... but if they did believe that then this new Ryan Day tenure might bode well for the good guys.

We don't know that he said "kick rocks", or anything of the sort. For all that any of us know, he could have been inches away from going there. Maybe he wanted too much money. None of us know.

I just don't understand why people feel the need to fill in blanks like that, to make some kind of statement. Not trying to pick on you, just saying. It's one of my pet peeves, and I think it's a real barrier to honest discourse.

Nobody (not even Sam Webb) will publically state what really happened, so anybody's fill in the blank is as good/ bas as anyone else's.

We do know that Brown wanted to be a HC and seriously interviewed for the Temple job. Assuming he still wants to be a HC, being the DC at Michigan vs. OSU isn't going to make any difference. In fact, at OSU, he'd have to train everybody on his style of play and his terms... and hope that he gets along as well with Day as he does with Harbaugh (and that Day is OK with being hands off).

There's no narrative that means anything in defense of Michigan when Michigan never beats them. You have to be a comparable program for narratives to matter.

It's not like there's a narrative you could make for why Tennessee is a better place to play than Bama. They're tradition rivals, but not in results. Same thing going on here.

Interesting TidBit: Don Brown was also the Defensive Coordinator at Maryland before that. The OC when he was there? James Franklin.

There's some really cool connections he has with Chip Kelly, Joe Moorhead, Mike Locksley, and the Yale Baseball program. The more I research Don Brown, the more interesting he is.

Considering D Brown is not a backstabbing judas, I'm not sure he ever took an offer from OSU seriously. As our current coaches and players have said regarding that situation, "It's not ok".

I think that makes perfect sense.  The defense when Mattison was a coordinator earlier this decade was pretty good, but took a huge step forward when Brown took over.  If OSU wanted one of our top defensive assistants, why wouldn't they first aim at the one that makes Michigan elite, rather than just really good?

Great, Ohio State wins 62-39 then steals coaches and shows they can win next year using them.

That's depressing in it's own right. I can hardly wait.

I couldn't ever imagine Don Brown going to work for a guy that just torched his defense. The more likely scenario would be Don Brown smashing said guy's skull with a medieval flail.

This seems extraordinarily unlikely to me.  Day had already hired Jeff Hafley away from the 49'rs, and his title was Defensive Coordinator and Secondary Coach.  Hafley was brought in to be the DC of the future, and there's zero chance he would have left the NFL if that wasn't a guarantee from Day.

Bringing in Mattison for 2 years as co-Defensive Coordinator makes all kinds of sense, as he can mentor Hafley and gradually transition responsibilities to him.  Hafley has no reason to feel threatened, as Mattison is clearly taking his payday before retiring.  It's hard to see a downside, other than Mattison eating up a coaching slot that could be occupied by someone who's a better recruiter than Mattison is at this point in his career.

Bringing in Don Brown, on the other hand, would make exactly zero sense.  Assuming that you could somehow get him to agree to take a co-Defensive Coordinator title, you've just very publicly betrayed Hafley, which isn't earning you any goodwill the next time you look for an assistant, and Hafley is going to jump ship at the first opportunity, which may have been this year before the start of the season-- he's already turned down at least two offers from NFL teams.

I would find all of this more plausible if Brown was contacted before Hafley was hired, and he turned it down, and Hafley was 2nd choice-- but the timing of that doesn't work out at all.

I'm not saying it didn't happen, but unless there's absolutely firm evidence, I'm pretty skeptical.

I think you're dead-on. Living 30 miles from that cess-pool, I get to see/hear a lot of info and it was pretty clear from the start that Day wanted Hafley as his DC - OSU opened up their wallets to get him there. And most of the OSU fans believe he'll be calling the shots - not Mattison - who is viewed as a short term hire and was brought in to stabilize a young staff

Interesting story and thanks for sharing, but sheesh we just need to beat them already.  2-16 in my adult life is borderline unbearable.  I'll have to quit college football if we don't beat in the next few years...or at least give up on social media fan sites for my own sanity.

Next few years?!  Sorry, this year has to be the year. I think the Gattis pickup and JH handing the keys over was huge, and our offense is going to be dare I say really good? I think we are going to put up some points

Defense will take a step back but still pretty good, not very good or elite. First year head coach for them, numerous other new coaches, at the Big House, we will probably really good offense, probably good to pretty good defense..... win the fuckin game

I want to believe, but I did in '16 & '18 too.  DEs will still kill us in the pass rush.  OSU's CBs are still big, fast, & athletic.  We still don't have a quality CB #3 to cover in the slot.  We still lack depth in lots of positions like CB, & d-line, which sucks when we always play them at the end of the year.  First year head coach & first year starting QB are good starts.  But, Fields is also a really high level recruit and it's been so long.  I still like OSU on paper.

Are you really more confident in your offense than your defense? I think UM's defense will likely still be a top-10 unit.

The transition to a spread will be good for you guys in the long-run without a doubt, but I think there will be some noticeable growing pains this season. Gattis still hasn't been the sole OC anywhere, so hiring him was a little bit of a gamble. Regardless, he's been a Co-OC for some great offenses in recent years and he's definitely learned a lot from other coaches he was around. Solid hire for UM, IMO, but I don't anticipate a drastic turnaround this season.

Defensively, you guys have been in the top-10 the past 3 seasons under Brown. Unlike a lot of OSU fans, I give Don Brown a lot of credit and think he's one of the best DCs in the country. One game giving up 62pts isn't enough for me to (ignorantly) say that Don Brown isn't good. We could hardly do anything offensively against UM in 2016, and we weren't looking so hot in 2017 until Haskins came in. Brown's track record throughout his career speaks for itself.

You'll lose a lot of talent defensively, but UM has still recruited pretty well over the past few years. Besides, as I said, I think Brown's coaching has a lot to do with it. He even lead BC, who doesn't have the same talent as UM, to the #1 total defense one season.

That's my take, and I could obviously be very wrong. At the end of the day, I don't see why any UM fan wouldn't be optimistic about Gattis/the offense. You needed a change and you got one, so might as well hope for the best!

This doesn't make sense.  If you have so much familiarity with an elite coordinator that gives you an advantage no one else has, why would you want to put him on your staff and take away that advantage?

  1. You smash your supposedly impenetrable rival when no one else can.
  2. You can tell recruits you're the only one who can light up Michigan and show evidence that no one else has.

What is it about sports commend boards that people feel compelled to regurgitate the same tiresome cliches so endlessly like this. At least find some new angle, no?

OSU is in for a serious reality check this year. We will be heavy favorites at home and are going to change the narrative and return the favor. UM 62 OSU 17
