Did anyone else hear Braylon Edwards yesterday

Submitted by ldevon1 on

I guess Braylon will be doing a weekly guest appearance on the Mike Valente show every Thursday at 5:00pm on 97.1 The Ticket in Detroit, and yesterday he was on fire with the wildest "takes" Just a few that I heard, and feel free to add if you heard him.

1. He is obviously red assed about KeKoa Crawford wering the #1. Said it's "Jim's thing" and he feels that a player should have to earn it, the way Carr made him earn it.

2. No defensive player should ever wear that number.(#1)

3. Brandon Peters should be starting: Anyone that saw the spring game, and some fall practice knows that Peters is the best QB on the team.

4. Rashan Gary needs to get in shape: He takes plays off and doesn't spend maximum effort on every play

5. Jim needs to utilize the TE's more to open things up for the WR's: They need to incorporate more crossing routes for the TE's.

6. Wilton Speight is what he is: "The so called QB guru" thinks he can make Speight into something he isn't capable of being.

Those are just a few I can remeber off of the top of my head. I've never really been a big Braylon fan, from the time he tried to Hi Jack the #1 for his own selfish purposes, to some of his comments during the RR era, but this is on another level.

Beyond overboard?  I've mentioned item #4, and no others.  I live in Virginia, and never hear Valenti - but he sounds like a complete asshat.  But your opinion is also valid, so if you want to defend him (and everything BE says), fell free to do so multiple times to multiple posters.  And please, also feel free to tell other people they've gone overboard...

Beyond overboard. And because you didn't listen to the interview and are just READING TEXT, you have zero clue on the context.

If you can, do yourself a favor and find the audio. And if you do, you'll understand exactly what I'm talking about.

But your ability to have a conversation with others who did listen to the interview and are trying to portray how things were worded is zero.

Sorry, but I'm not trying to portray anything.  All I said is that Gary has never been known to take plays off, be out of shape, or lazy, or anything else that fits into that mold.  And to say he didn't have any impact (or a "massive impact") during the UF game is ludicrous!  What are you basing that on?  Because he didn't have any sacks?  Watch the highlights, you'll notice the double and triple teams.  Furbush came through to cover a fumble because Gary caved in two linemen and a RB that were trying to keep him from getting to Zaire.  Chase's play was outstanding on its own merit, and is not a result of Gary being on the opposite side of the field.  But Furbush?  He got through because Gary destroyed the entire right side of the protection.  That play alone is a massive impact - it effectively ended the game.

I'm not shitting on the interview, or Braylon (though he's been an asshole for quite a while now), or you.  I'm shitting on the thought that Gary is a fat, lazy slackard.

But don't you think there's a distinction between saying "this guy isn't all-world yet" and saying he takes plays off?  Saying there's room for improvement is a lot less damning than saying a guy's lazy/out of shape and thus intentionally not contributing on some plays.

"The so called QB guru" thinks he can make Speight into something he isn't capable of being. Do you really disagree with this?

Yes, I do disagree with this very strongly.

1.) Why call Harbaugh a so-called QB guru? Sounds like a deliberate insult to me.

2) What reason does anyone have to think they know Harbaugh's opinion of Speight's ceiling? And why would they think their opinion is more valid? Other than Harbaugh is only a "so called QB guru".

Because we've watched this guy for an entire season?? And he's had an entire off-season to get better, and we are looking at basically the same guy.

But again, Braylon said he is very limited with his skill set and he'll still get the most out of Speight as he possibly can.

Again, people keep missing the entire context of this discussion. And you convinently pulled out the majority of my comment to make your point.

but I don't think he [Gary] was a massive impact against Florida that we all expected and needs to continue to step it up.
Not trying to start an argument but I saw Gary doubled a lot. Can Gary get better? Sure. All of them can.

Probably no one they have would draw me in, but Valenti actively pushes me away. You're right that he's good at his job, because his job is to be obnoxious. I don't hate him, I just get nothing but annoyed listening to him.

Also, my question wasn't rhetorical. I thought I remember people saying he was moving to a show in NYC. I guess he didn't.

You on who you like and do not like, that's up to you.

But to say he's just good at this job because he is obnoxious is really false. He knows his shit. If he didn't, he wouldn't be getting interviews for the biggest radio show in the country, and he wouldn't be one of the highest rated shows as it currently is in Detroit.

But lots of people are good sports analysts. He is successful because of his presentation and out-there takes - the things I find obnoxious.

Anyway, I'm not the guy to lead the anti-Valenti side of this discussion because I don't dislike him that much, just enough that I'm not going to use my free time hearing what he has to say. I genuinely thought he got a job in New York and was gone, that's why I brought it up.

He had like a 3 day working interview a couple of months ago. They are going through a ton of other interviews.

I still don't think he would leave, even if he got the offer. There is no college scene in New York, and that's what he seems to love the most.

What he really needs is to find a co-host. He is good enough to carry a show himself, but any good radio show needs a couple of guys going back and forth. I would bet a ton of guys would take the call if they were offered the job.

that #1 isn't a thing anymore. I am not sure why, but it always seemed like such a contrived thing when someone noticed, "ooh, look, Carter wore # 1 and Alexander wore #1, let's make it a thing." If Marquise Walker can't be a # 1, I am not sure what the value of it is. Just seems to arbitrary to be a standard of greatness.

Honestly, I'd be ok if nobody wore number 1 again.  Not out of some sense of reverence for Carter, Edwards, etc.  But because I like the idea of team unity.  Nobody is "number 1".  I'd also like to remove last names from jerseys.  But I'm crotchety like that.

I'm with Braylon in the defensive wearing of No. 1 though.  Was shocked to see that when the roster was published last week.

Out of reverence to Carter?  That's why wearing #1 is supposed to be special for Michigan WRs.  That was kinda of a tradition for 30+ years.

But then again I don't mind that Crawford has it -- he has the potential to be a helluva talent.

Anyone who prefers Carr to Harbaugh loses a lot of credibility in my book. I think Carr's early success was much more a product of Mo/Bo than his own doing. Idc if Braylon is loyal to him, he's not accurate. Also I find this kind of bitching from a Michigan guy on the radio will not help anyone at all. We should all be thankful to have JH. We should not be as good as we have been the past 2 years, that's almost all thanks to his efforts.

Saying Gary is taking plays off but never mention a word about Spartans taking whole games off last year. I personally have never seen Gary take a play off. Nor would I believe Don Brown or Harbaugh let him get away with it. McDowell got away with taking every other play off all of last year. I bet he downplays the beat down WMU is going to give his Sparties this Saturday. I thought they looked like they were saving some plays for this weeks opponent while they were sleep walking against Bowling Green last Saturday. What's worse is all their fans thinking the ship has been righted after watching that dismall outing against BGU.

How it presents in print, but that's what Braylon said. I put the link up to the podcast so everyone could form their own opinion, but it is my opinion that he was throwing out "hot takes", whether it was to inflame the audience, or he really believes these things, but he absolutely said eveything I wrote. Nothing I said was / is false.

I apologize, I thought you had the response I was replying to.

It was in response to the content of the guy above me talking about Valenti and how he said "every single MSU fan feels like they are great" and how Valenti wasn't critical of his team.

Both of which are not true.

Detroit sports right now absolutely are miserable. I'll take ANY semi intelligent coverage of Michgan right now.  Valenti is okay in doses, especially when UM is up and MSU is mediocre. After Sam and Ira things are pretty bleak on the radio.

Braylon and his dad have always been pretty straight shooters with strong opinions. I like to hear them and can't disagree with most of what he said. There were some guys I thought were a little AWOL v FLorida. Not going ot call out kids as it is game one and maybe scheme had something to do with it , but one guy criticized by Edwards was at the top of the list.

That said people need to lay off Speight. I have 100% + confidence in Harbaugh's ability to work with quarterbacks (moreso than clock management) and if Wilton is his guy, and you want UM to be successful, support "our guy".

Let's all enjoy our defense and the beatdown we should see tomorrow. we won't learn a whole lot but maybe everyone will be in more positive mood.

thread is shit, a bunch of homers who can't handle Braylon being reasonable. Braylon played for Harbaugh and respects the hell out of him, he was not shitting on Michigan. He was setting realistic expectations for this year, he has repeatedly told Valenti how terrible MSU is this year and that they have an upside of 5-7. He thinks Michigan is a 9-3 team and he doesn't think Sp8 is good. He is right about Speight, outside of 2 or 3 games so far, he has not been any better than Oconner from MSU last year.

Mgodiscgolfer

September 8th, 2017 at 10:42 AM ^

I could not care less. The team is prepared so well opponents don't have a chance against UM. Squabbling over who's wearing #1 is what devides teams. Winning is what is important.
