Plus, Georgia lost to Alabama because of sheer stupidity. That alone should cost you the spot in the CFP.

Kirby Smart turned into John L. Smith on the fake punt call.
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:02 PM ^
If Clemson, Notre Dame, Oklahoma or Ohio State played Alabama yesterday and lost in a similar fashion, they all would be automatically out of the discussion as a top 4 team.
So, what makes Georgia losing so different?
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:29 PM ^
I'm guessing Oklahoma is the fourth for political reasons.
If it's Georgia, there's going to be extreme pressure to expand. Plus, I'd point to 2014. "NFL-lite" was bandied about for the SEC West, as the back-loaded schedules and the SEC-bias allowed the SEC West to dominate the rankings throughout the season. What happened to the top 5 teams in the SEC West that year? They all lost.
Which leaves a jump ball between Oklahoma & OSU. Which of the B1G & B12 got the possession the last time? It was the B1G over the B12 in 2014 with OSU chosen over TCU & Baylor. So I'm thinking the possession arrow goes to the B12 this year and Oklahoma.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:50 PM ^
In hindsight, Georgia at #5 and OSU at #6 should have also been obvious as a political ordering.
How do you diffuse the push back from the one-loss conference champion that got left out? Give them a meaningless #6 ranking (versus #5).

ESPN studio show has 2 SEC grads and 2 buckeyes. No representation from ACC, Big12 or PAC-12. Piece of shit network.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:38 PM ^
that's why they call it BSPN!
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:32 PM ^
ND is one of the biggest names in college sports, with an enormous fanbase. They are a traditional power with a long history of success and wins, even though they have struggled a bit in more recent years. (Wow, that hits a little too close to home).
They are in.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:35 PM ^
And that's the top 4 that it should be.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:38 PM ^
Fine with this. They didn’t fuck it up
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:03 PM ^
Oklahoma vs. Alabama should be very interesting.
December 2nd, 2018 at 2:15 PM ^
Especially if Hurts is QB.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:44 PM ^
I know this won't happen but it would be awesome to see a Michigan/OSU match-up in a NY6 game....there would be a sh*t ton of money to be made in a rematch and I'm sure both outfits would prefer to play each other again.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:45 PM ^
Anyone know what time they announce Michigan/Florida?
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:45 PM ^
Sigh.

BREAKING: MICHIGAN VS GEORGIA IN SUGAR BOWL
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:46 PM ^
Gulp.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:53 PM ^
Well, at least this shouldn’t be a letdown—this isn’t like drawing UCF or another group of five school. This will be a big test for the coaches and team.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:54 PM ^
SBNation is reporting the Sugar Bowl is Georgia and Texas.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:55 PM ^
No it's not. Texas vs Georgia. Don't make shit up
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:57 PM ^
Trolling. Sugar has to have a Big 12 team.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:48 PM ^
OHIO STATE VS WASHINGTON IN ROSE
UCF VS LSU IN PEACH
TEXAS VS FLORIDA IN FIESTA
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:52 PM ^
Florida and LSU could end up switching
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:06 PM ^
Which one has a better chance of beating the crap out of UCF, so all the UCF fans will shut up about how great their team is and how they should've gotten a better bowl?
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:55 PM ^
We still have a shot at the Cheez-It Bowl.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:56 PM ^
Just make up a new bowl.
Michigan vs. Ohio State in the Don Brown Redemption Bowl.
December 2nd, 2018 at 12:57 PM ^
I’m of the belief that the NCAA’s stance of not expanding has just been lip service. They’re only concerned with one thing, the almighty dollar. I don’t think they wanted to admit to expansion publicly because of their expected stance of “student athlete” first. However, I think they’ve been laying the ground work for a few years of creating a narrative that expansion is a must.... without them saying it, mind you.
I think that they can use this year to leave ND out, and would certainly make the expansion outcry more audible. Playoff matchups would most definitely generate more revenue as opposed to just regular bowl games, not only for the NCAA, but for the institutions as well.
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:10 PM ^
It isn’t the NCAA.
December 2nd, 2018 at 2:12 PM ^
Money can make the expansion possible. With The Game being a big viewer game, and SEC heavy playoff means less views out of the Mid-West and West. No team from the Big Ten or other power 5 hurts. There are Billions of bucks at stake!

ESPN thinks Notre dame is a city
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:17 PM ^
Well they're not completely wrong. I've received mail from there and the return postage is "Notre Dame, Indiana."
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:32 PM ^
You can write any city/neighborhood/locality name in the address and, so long as the zip code is correct, it'll get there just fine.
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:39 PM ^
The University of Notre Dame got Indiana to officially make them an unincorporated community with its own zip code to be extra cute.
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:49 PM ^
It is. You can live in. Notre Dame, Indiana. Now is it a city, town, village, etc? Not sure which, but it’s absolutely a boundary with a name.
December 2nd, 2018 at 2:35 PM ^
But is the university in South Bend?
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:05 PM ^
They should have a requirement that only conference champs can make the playoffs. Then maybe everyone will start scheduling tougher OOC games.
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:07 PM ^
I don’t see why this would be an outcome of that, at all.
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:10 PM ^
I expect he's arguing that if OOC records can't hurt a conference champion's CFP resumé, they'll surely resume tougher scheduling practices.
I think that's tenuous as a cause-effect relationship, but at least it would remove a *disincentive* for scheduling tough in the OOC.
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:19 PM ^
That’s ridiculous. He said only conference champions should be allowed in, not only conference games matter. If my team is a conference champion and 2-1 OOC and I’m trying to beat out another conference champion that is 3-0 OOC, I have a great chance of sitting my ass home in most situations.
December 2nd, 2018 at 2:22 PM ^
The obstacle is still $. If you play Alabama, you've got to split the dough more or less. If you play Eastern Michigan you can give them a much smaller cut and EMU is still happy so both parties win financially.
Also, the disincentive $ wise for coaches is still against tough OOC opponents. The downside of a loss isn't really worth it when you can beat Middle Tennessee and have a better record when your multi-million job is on the line.
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:13 PM ^
Agreed.
I’d most certainly force Notre Dame to join a conference. But it would actually DECREASE the likelihood of teams scheduling stronger OOC games.
I could also see teams perhaps jockeying to get into weaker conferences so they could bully everybody. Or alternatively, reduce the conference schedule from 9 games to either 8 or even 7 games and insert insanely easy OCC teams like the SEC does.
Then a team like Michigan or OSU could do what the SEC does. Play a cupcake schedule, and then play maybe 2 respectable teams the whole year max until the conference championship game against a legit strong team.
Basically boils it down to a one game regular season unless a team chokes and gets upset by one of the 1-2 “respectable” teams.
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:13 PM ^
I think it would move things in that direction. Not as much as giving conference champs auto-bids in a 8 team playoff, but it would place more of an emphasis on winning your conference championship, than finishing the season a 1 or 2 loss SEC team. Conference champs with 2 loses would frequently make it over 1 loss teams, if they made that change.

I was driving home from church listening to NPR. They announced that Alabama, Clemson, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Georgia and Ohio State would be participating in the college football playoff. I thought what the what?! Nice to see that not only ES(ec)PN can mess up.
December 2nd, 2018 at 1:34 PM ^
NPR covers a lot of stuff, but college football is not one of its strengths.
December 2nd, 2018 at 6:56 PM ^
Yeah, it's partially funded by government. You wouldn't understand.
December 2nd, 2018 at 3:10 PM ^
Final. Blahhhhhh. Even though I get to go now, still boring AF.
