CC: Per the Podcast....who is your Top 7?

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on
Hopefully you all checked out Brian's podcast today with Ace and Brian's Top 7 coaching candidates. No surprises as the common Top 2 (1.Jim Harbaugh 2. Mullen). Anyone who reads the blog can tell you some of the other names that showed up but I don't want to discourage people from actually listening to the Podcast. The question I pose is what is everyone's REALISTIC Top 7 (Keep the Sabans,Belicheks et. Al to yourself) . I agree with the Top 2 (top choice would be either Harbaugh, two would be Mullen). Not sure of the order at this point but next would be one of Shaw from Stanford, Gundy at OkieSt and Les Miles. Then If we had to go coordinator I'd say Tom Herman from Ohio or Teryl Austin from the Lions.

"I used to stare down at that field as I was stenciling those numbers," Harbaugh told reporters, athletes and others who crowded into the Arrillaga Family Sports Center's Kissick Auditorium. "I so very badly wanted to go to Stanford and play for the Cardinal. … This was my number-one choice all along."

1. Jim Harbaugh

3. Les Miles

4. Mark Stoops

5. Mike Gundy

6. Tom Herman

7. Joe Moglia

----

If y'all can run around talkin' bout Bob Stitt, then I'll throw Joe Moglia onto my list. Quit football coaching in 1983 to work for Merrill Lynch. Eventually left to be CEO of TD Ameritrade where he did a real bang up job and probably became a billionaire (he doesn't like to talk about such things). Never stopped loving football though, so he stepped down as CEO and more or less bought his way onto Bo Pelini's Nebraska staff so he could take a crash course in updating his philosophies from 1983.

Coaches a semi pro team in Omaha before he finds a tiny lil' public college just outside of Myrtle Beach, SC that has no money (seriously when I went there for a baseball tournament they had classes in double wides) and offers them a huge donation if they hire him. They do and he's in his 3rd season with 2 conference titles already and a 7-0 record in year 3. The guy is BRILLIANT. And he's a REAL CEO coach. Forces his coaches to get everything they have to do in a regular workday. He's a real unique fella. I love him. He is 65 though. I don't care.

1. Jim Harbaugh

2. John Harbaugh

3. Dan Mullen

4. Gary Patterson

5. Mike Gundy

6. Tom Herman

7. Dana Holgerson (Bob Stitt as OC perhaps?)

HM: Chad Morris, Todd Graham, Jim McElwain

If I'm the AD, I also put out feelers to the long-shot candidates: Gus Malzahn, Nick Saban, Chip Kelly, Charlie Strong, etc. Obviously doubtful any of them are interested, but you never know...

Chuck Martin? in the spirit of a Tressell or Dantonio -- coming from a "lesser" conference: Two Nat. Championships, four undefeated Grand Valley teams, 76-14 overall. Gotta be on the list. ('Course, i said that before UM hired Rodriguez and Hoke, too, so clearly nobody listens...)

Why does anyone think Mullen is an option? He's coach of the #1 team in the country right now and miss st will open up the bank for him. They don't have the booster money that michigan does, but I'm sure they have one guy that can find him.

Similarly, the harbaugh's are not an option and neither is Gundy (he's at his dream job now).

Our realistic options are less successful head coaches or hot coordinators. I'm sick of our fanbase looking like ND a few years ago with the Gruden/ Saban talk. We seem (and are) arrogant asses

Mullen absolutely listens if Michigan calls. Here's what you're missing:

#1 - Miss. St.'s sucess is unsustainable. By this I mean they will not consistently be competing for SECW championships with Auburn, Alabama, and LSU in the same division. MSU simply cannot recruit at the level of those schools, this year is a once in five or ten years sort of deal.

#2 - Miss. St. has an inflated opinion of how competitive their team should be. Case in point, Mullen was on the hot seat (maybe not hot... but warm at least) coming into this year despite having an unprecedented run of success there. Their fanbase has grown discontent with 7-8 win seasons, which historically don't happen very often there due to their inherent disadvantages.

Now, would Mullen actually come? Maybe, maybe not. Miss St. will surely break the bank to keep him, and he'll be a legend there if he can somehow continue this level of success. But you have to at least make a run at him if the Harbaughs aren't coming. Michigan offers easier recruiting, less competition, as good or better facilities, and more $ (even if MSU offers to give him a raise). Not to mention he would go down in Michigan lore if he turned this mess around. It's totally realistic to think that he would be at least tempted to come here.

If MSU doesnt get into the playoff with a 1 loss does he stay there? It seems like MSU would be the 1 loss team being left out so its a possibility that he may start looking elsewhere

I am down to

1) JIm H

2) Tom Herman (hopefully he can grab Muschamp to bring in as DC)

That's as far as the list needs to go really.

A week or so I would have said Jim H or keep Hoke but I've seen his best (talent wise) player quit on the team and that's about as bad as it gets for me.

I don't think either Harbaugh is a serious option, so I'm not going to bother ranking them. Miles isn't leaving LSU at this stage in his career. Gundy isn't leaving OkState, and we're not getting in a bidding war with T. Boone Pickens for him. My top 7 is thus:

1. Dan Mullen - I think this goes without saying. If he's willing to leave Starkville to come to Ann Arbor, whomever is the AD would be nuts to not make the move. The SEC Network money flowing in at the end of the season might push Miss St. into a position where they can match offers though.

2. Butch Jones - Local guy, recruits well, is showing signs of undoing some of the damage Kiffin and Dooley did to Tennessee.

3. Chad Morris - Innovative offensive mind, recruits well, though his deep ties to Texas and the south means he needs a good staff around him while he builds a local network.

4. Kirby Smart - Same as Morris, except on defense. Especially if he took a swing at Bob Stitt for the OC spot and gave him free reign (which might move him to 2 actually).

5. Ruffin McNeill - Probably not willing to leave the south, but he's done a bang-up job at ECU.

6. Beau Baldwin - FCS guy, but wildly successful at Eastern Washington.

7. Bob Stitt - As noted above, I'd rather have him as the OC with a defense-first head coach, but if all else fails.... goddamnit all I want is some exciting football. Give me 67-65 triple OT wins against Illinois over 18-13 shitfests against Penn State every day.

Mullen or Stoops because I truly think neither Harbaugh will come here because they don't need to and Les Miles owns Baton Rouge much like Saban owns Tuscaloosa so why would anyone want to give that up? I also think Miles recruiting ways won't fly here either. If Mullen stays put I'd really like Stoops. I know people will groan that he's not proven but you can already see the start of what he's doing at Kentucky, he's getting kids they don't normal get and he's turned them around in two years.

I'm relying on Bear Bryant theory.  "Mama is calling you home."

I can't believe he won't come.  His alma mater's program is in shambles.  I'm sure he can't stomach the notion that rivals are shitting on us right now and have for years.  I know this because he's coach in an organization where the team colors are red and gold and he refuses to wear red.  His ego is being stroked to the nth degree because the fanbase (myself included) is convinced that he is the only one who can rescue us from this tire fire.

I don't care how much his wife loves the bay area.  At several million per year she can afford a an f'n plane ticket.  Hell Rich Rogel could offer up his plane if he has to.  And if she is still going to be a pain in the ass about it, tell her to stay there.

he may not have won the super bowl ring.  But he's already made history and proven to have a successful career already.  But at Michigan he could be a legend on the level of Fielding, Fritz, and Bo. . .

I'm a mere mortal, but if I were him, I simply can't fathom passing that up . . .I just can't do it. .

  1. Jim Harbaugh - No brainer
  2. Dan Mullen - No brainer 1a
  3. Les Miles - Can right the ship in his coaching twilight
  4. Jim McElwain - HC CSU, turned around flailing program
  5. Todd Graham - Good coach, but fear the job hopping thing
  6. Mark Stoops - Proving self at UK, would jump to be at a 'football school'
  7. Troy Calhoun - HC Air Force, love this guy, long shot, but I hope they would give him a serious look

I am going to list candidates that I feel are legitimate and Michigan can actually get. Many of the coaches I've seen on here (Gundy, Patterson, John Harbaugh, etc.) are virtually impossible to get because of their current situation or the fact that they are coaching at their alma mater.

1. Jim Harbaugh

Almost impossible, but the rumors are giving me some optimism. His track record speaks for itself.

2. Todd Graham

Everybody seems to hate him because of his "job hopping." All of his moves were understandable in my mind and if he came to UM there would be no reason for him to leave. We are a final destination job, we fire you or you retire here. There is no leaving.

3. Dan Mullen

This year has made him look amazing. I'm sold on him, but I am not fond of the fact that he currently employs the oversigning system where they cut kids if they suck and don't guarantee their scholarship for all four years. I don't like that, but he's a solid coach.

4. Jim McElwain

He's turned Colorado State into a solid program in just three years. His track record as an OC is great as well. I feel like he and Mullen are on the same level.

5. Tom Herman

He'd come here in a heart beat and he has been learning under Meyer, who I believe is a top three coach. He's also a great recruiter.

6. Les Miles

He's old, but his track record is solid and I think he could stick around for a solid ten years and hand it off to an assistant.

7. Pep Hamilton

Colt's OC. He has college experience (Stanford) and he is currently running a top five NFL offense. He'd be very risky, but I have faith in him.

Unicorn: I am a huge Colt's fan and I know he has a few more years until he retires from playing, but Peyton Manning. Every OC who has ever coached him has said that Peyton is the REAL OC, not them. Peyton is playing the best football of his career, but if he were to randomly retire, I would love to see Michigan make a run at him.

... namely Harbaughs, Miles or Mullen. Since I don't think we'll get any of them, I am hoping for a Mark (Hudspeth) or a Matt (Wells). After that, I want someone who will hire Stitt for OC and a Narduzzi-level coordinator for DC. Sadly, I don't think either our current AD or our new AD will be that creative, and we'll be reduced to hoping that Loeffler or Cameron is better than we think.

thats it for me.

Too much of a perfect fit right now.  Hard nosed mother effer, born and raised in Ann Arbor, would be an instant hero and would more than likley succeed.  Like Brian and Ace said, ya he would do stuff to annoy us but I think we  would all give zero effs.  This shit storn has to end and we have been in the eye of the storm for many years now...with a sun break in 2011.

All I ask is no flyers. The expectation of the program is to be a top 10-15 team at least 3 out of every 4 years and be competing for a national championship at least 1 out of 4 years. To do that, you don't bring in a D III guy or someone who has never been a high level head coach. You need somebody who can step in and be one of the top ten coaches in the country and the top 1-2 coaches in the B1G, right away. That is a short list. Basically the Harbaughs, Miles, Gruden, maybe Mullen. If we strike out on a "big name", top coach, then we are probably in a tail spin toward a long stretch of mediocrity. The fans will never unite in support of a guy who spends his first four years #3-5 in the B1G and somewhere in the #15-30 team in the country, even if that is improvement from where we are now. There is no patience in the culture of Michigan football right now. This isn't like the basketball team, where we were so used to being bad that we could give Beilein the time and patience to work stuff out and find a high level of success. It is a knock it out of the park hire or bust situation.
