CC: Per the Podcast....who is your Top 7?

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on
Hopefully you all checked out Brian's podcast today with Ace and Brian's Top 7 coaching candidates. No surprises as the common Top 2 (1.Jim Harbaugh 2. Mullen). Anyone who reads the blog can tell you some of the other names that showed up but I don't want to discourage people from actually listening to the Podcast. The question I pose is what is everyone's REALISTIC Top 7 (Keep the Sabans,Belicheks et. Al to yourself) . I agree with the Top 2 (top choice would be either Harbaugh, two would be Mullen). Not sure of the order at this point but next would be one of Shaw from Stanford, Gundy at OkieSt and Les Miles. Then If we had to go coordinator I'd say Tom Herman from Ohio or Teryl Austin from the Lions.

I had thought about that name before too. He has HC experience (B1G no less) from Indiana. But I'm not sold on the offense that LSU is fielding right now. If I'm taking a shot in the dark on a coordinator, I'm not sure he's the one I'd go with. Does give us a good chance with continuity with the likes of Mattison, however.

Can someone please explain to me why John Harbaugh would be wise? Is there any evidence that suggests he would be a better coach at the college level than other, more likely candidates?

My list:

1. JIM HARBAUGH

2. Mullen

3. Mark Stoops

4. Tom Herman

5. Patterson

6. Gundy

7. Peterson

I know a lot of people (myself included) are against Narduzzi, but I have a feeling that on the snowball's chance that he comes here, he would love it. That's with a thoroughly purged AD of course.

1) Jim Harbaugh (so much for realistic)
2a) Pat Narduzzi (if Warde Manual is our AD)
2b) Bert Bielema (if Jeff Long is our AD)
2c) Tom Herman (if Brad Bates is our AD)
...
7) Bob Stitt

I'm not sold on the HC requirement. It's hit or miss to me.

With some reasoning:

1. Jim H - no reasoning needed.

2. Les Miles - we need a big name hire to change the negative dialogue surrounding our program. Nice bonus would be all of the "coming home" stories. Proven winner in the hardest conference, awesome defenses and produced a good coaching tree.

3. John H - I know that some have said that he lacks college HC experience, but how often do you get a chance to take a relatively young, recent Super Bowl winning HC? The guy would have instant credibility with any top recruit.

4. Herman (OSU OC) - has a nice track record, gets rave development reviews from players, great recruiter and would absolutely reinvigorate the best former rivalry I sports (former because it isn't really a rivalry when one team never wins). I like this hire a lot.

5. Mullen - flavor of the season, has done well ina strong conference, but his track record is weak

6. RichRod - I openly pined for his firing since the start of 2010, but I can admit when I am wrong. Has strong michigan ties, having been the head coach here before.

7. Meh - list gets pretty weak after this.

Behind Jim. H, John H and Mullen. I think Les Miles may be our best bet to actually want to coach Michigan now!  Miles will lose another road game or two and finish 2nd or 3rd in the SEC west. I think Miles is sick of how tough of a conference the SEC has become. He's looking at the B1G and saying to himself, easy pickings, easy pickings!!!! I can finish 1st in this poor mans conference!

Eventually, I think Jim H. will be our coach but I think he will try with other teams in the NFL before heading to Michigan. It would work out well. Miles will build up the program, win a 3 or 4 B1G titles and get into the playoffs a few times before he retires at age 66 or 67, then Jim Harbaugh will come in and coach his final 10 to 15 years at Michigan.

My order of preference, their attainability is debateable.

1a) Jim H

1b) Dan Mullen-I seriously think he is a near perfect fit 9.9/10 if Harbaugh is a 10

3) John H

4) Bronco Mendenhall

5) Mark Stoops

6) Tom Herman

7) Les Miles

I had forgotten about him as a candidate, but Kyle Whittingham would be a great choice if they can't get anyone named Mullen or Harbaugh.  Utah is a difficult place to recruit, but they still managed to beat UCLA and USC and are sitting at 6-1.

Here are my seven:

Dan Mullen

John H

Jim H

Gary Patterson

Kyle Whittingham

Kevin Sumlin

Todd Graham

Sorry, track record of success as HC required.

I want Jim Harbaugh and have a gut feeling he would come if offered the job.

Jamie Morris also mentioned Teryl Austin, but I'm not sure I want another defensive coach especially with the way our offense has sucked.

1)  Harbaugh or a Hurricane named Harbaugh

2)  Gary Patterson (The only guy I can come up with who is defensively rigid but offensively flexible, which I believe to be key for a successful hire for us)

3)  Gus Malzahn (Even more of a unicorn than Harbaughs, cultural misfit, seems like a Southern man through and through, maybe an Auburn lifer,  but I DON'T CARE)

4) Dan Mullen (If Florida comes open we are done here)

5) Les.  Would be worth it for the press conferences alone.

6)  Todd Graham (Seems like a douche but he has a good eye for OC/DC talent and I think we need an asshole)

7)  I'll lump all my little school guys and wildcards in here starting with Craig Bohl, Stitt (just because), Doc Holliday (Marshall is ranked!), Bronco Mendenhall, Izzy Mendelbaum, Bull Cyclone, John Wayne, Ditka vs. God the game is golf, a ham sandwich, the kitchen sink, The poster of Humphrey Bogart at Rick's, Lloyd "Bill Snyder" Carr, the lady that used to yell at you at Blimpie Burger, etc.

Wow, all these lists consist of Superbowl NFL coaches and coaches of Top Ten teams.  Interesting, um, optimism.

No Youngstown State/Tressel types or Cincinnati/Dantonio types like those Top Ten teams had to do.  We're just going to pluck a coach from LSU or Oklahoma or the 49ers or the Ravens.

Teryl Austin...period....full stop. He could come here, it is realistic to believe he would and he has deep ties to the university. He's also a great coach and it's realistic to believe we would get him.
