Caris LeVert's $93,000 Watch Stolen

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on August 11th, 2023 at 8:25 AM

I don't wear a watch anymore, but back when I DID wear a watch, it cost a little less than that. Caris threw a party and a dude stole his watch. STORY.

Spike Albrecht did not have much sympathy.

Maybe I am outing myself as a commoner here, but i just googled Peugeot Watches, and it seems like they are more like 93 dollars? What am I missing?

Also showing up in the google search is Piguet, which seems to be much more in the ballpark price wise.

The irony of expensive watches is that they generally don’t keep great time, relatively speaking.  Most high-end watches have a mechanical movement (tiny gears and springs, but no battery or electronic components) that are inherently less accurate than a decent quartz watch—or any smart watch—you could get for much, much less. Acceptable accuracy for a very high-end mechanical watch would be +/- a couple seconds a day, which translates to a minute a month.
For folks that really get into watches, the “charm” of the heritage and intricacy of the mechanical movement on the inside, along with the design and materials on the outside are much more important than absolute accuracy as a timekeeper.  It is really more jewelry than timekeeping function at some level.  [This coming from someone who is interested in the engineering that goes into mechanical watches, but doesn’t have anything even approaching high-end.]

I mean …. kinda

a minute a month isnt that bad. I have a custom  tag heuer chronograph (mechanical, not quartz)  and I have to change the time a couple minutes back or forward every 3 months or so. It’s a $600 gift from my wife from years back.

for 99.99% of the planet, a watch that is +/- 2 or 3 seconds a day is more than good enough to keep “accurate” time.

also, I wear a watch daily because it’s a watch, not for jewelry sake. I find it extremely rude to pull out your phone to check the time during a conversation, where a small glance at your wrist much less so.

but yea those really expensive ones, you’re just paying for name, complications, and the “jewelry, look at me” effect

Yeah, if you’re buying an AP, Patek or even Rolex/Omega/IWC, you’re not getting it for accuracy when your average casio/seiko keeps better time. Still, even if i would never buy one in a million years, I can appreciate the time, effort and skill that goes into a quality mechanical watch.

A decent safe would have been key in securing his valuables. And interesting that while he plays for the Cleveland Steamers, he lives in Lost Angeles.

He also could have saved himself a wad of cabbage had he bought this all titanium beauty of a watch for only $65

He's a gifted athlete who also has to work his ass off to maintain his athleticism and skill. As far as I'm concerned if he wants to wear a $93k watch on each wrist he's earned it.

No shit.  Hopefully it was insured or he recovers it.  But presumably $93K watch is full of precious stones and metals that won't lose a ton of value over time. But it doesn't seem like he lit $93K on fire. Presumably he can afford it, and if it brings him joy, so be it.

People remodel kitchens for $50K, $100K or more all the time replacing 90s or 2000s cabinets, countertops, floors, fixtures, layouts that are outdated, sure, but from a functional standpoint, are fine. No one bats an eye. Do those remodels add that value to the home (presumably yes) and do they make the homeowners happy, sure.  But point is, ordinary people in the U.S. buy high ticket items every day that they don't absolutely need. Would that seem absurd waste of money to millions of people who live in poverty around the world?  Absolutely.  It's all relative.

I remember when I was 10 years old some kid went in my jacket and stole my Garbage Pail Kids. That was probably the most valuable thing I've ever had stolen to this day.

And yes, Tony, I know it was you. Jerk.

$93k for a watch is not a big deal for Caris if he’s managing all his money well.  After all the cautionary tales of some former pro athletes being broke at the end of their careers, I’d like to think a lot more pro athletes these days are smarter with their money.  If you are not good with money, $93k for an item like a watch is a fast way to go broke.  However, Caris is a Michigan Man….so I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he’s managing his finances well.  So, more power to him for buying something he wanted.  I hope this situation resolves itself.
