Butch Jones with worst challenge decision in history

Submitted by UMxWolverines on

Tennessee scores with about 1:50 left. Down by 8 and still two timeouts. First onside kick Tennessee was offsides. Second onside kick Tennessee recovered but touched the ball after only 9.5 yards.

Butch Jones decides to challenge the ruling and loses a timeout. Missouri only has to snap the ball 3 times and they win. Dumb dumb dumb. Do not want.

Also was Pinkel ever a candidate back in 2007 or 2010? We might have screwed up not offering him. I think he could have been pretty good here.

But but but Mizzou was supposed to be a doormat in the vaunted SEC!

Real talk tho, ESPN mentioned that Florida and Michigan would be dumb not to at least give Chip Kelly a phone call...

What do you guys think of Chip? (I would say about 0.75% of him coming here and 1.25% him going to Florida, especially when he can trade the farm for Mariota in the draft this upcoming year given his lack of consistent QBs on the Eagles)

He won't!

Jeez. Can you imagine our offense in spring ball?!? Our guys are used to snapping the ball once every 39.5 seconds Then chip comes in with his laser light show offense. We'd be in shambles initially but I have no doubt ol chipper would get it done eventually.

There is a chance that Kelly might prefer college over the NFL and want to jump.  OTOH, there is no way that Saban, who is in many ways a Sparty at heart, is going to make a move that would be perceived as "lateral" at best.  Saban has one of the four or five college jobs that is already as good as Michigan's has the potential to be.

Without seeing the play, was it even close?  Ultimately it doesn't matter because the other team gets it anyways.  Might as well challenge and pray for a miracle.

Seems like it, but far from the worst challenge decision ever. Even if he didn't challenge it, from what the OP is saying, they'd have to get a 3 and out. And even if they did that, Mizzou would punt and so they'd have to drive probably 80 yards or more for a touchdown with something like 30 seconds left.

The story goes that Pinkel actually turned down an interview for the position in Ann Arbor after Rodriguez was fired, so he apparently was at least considered regardless of his actual interest in the position. Turning down the interview, of course, would indicate that he perhaps thought about Michigan for a moment and then disregarded that thought as quickly as it came. The larger point is that many articles reported him as being a potential target in January 2011.

how about a coach on the verge of his fifth 10 win season in the last eight years? Do we know how to do that? He'll get to 10-2 and the SEC championship game with a win at home next week against Arkansas. It would be his second SEC division title in a row, following up on last year's excellent 12-2 team, ranked #5 in the AP at season's end. Do we know how to do that? At Mizzou, where they can't recruit for much of anything.

It cost his team any chance of getting the ball back. He essentially had about the same amount of time on the game clock as Hoke did at the end of the game. Jones, like Hoke had only one time out left and did the same thing. He didn't use the timeout after the first down play.

I'll say this first, i didn't watch this game or see the highlights. Realistically how much better shape are they in whether Jones challenges or not? They still have to burn two timeouts, pray Mizzo doesn't convert a first down after burning two timeouts and still have to stop Mizzo on a 3rd down and watch the clock wind down before a punt then march down the field with no timeouts and try to score (which let's be honest happens how often), or you can gamble on getting the ball at mid field when the ball gets that close to being an onside recovery. Half a yard in game speed is probably pretty hard to tell on the field in a situation like that and I don't think it's the worst thing you could gamble on. Jones is a great coach and he's a fantastic recruiter and if Michigan whiffs on Harbaugh, Jones is my next choice. If you're going to say you don't want a guy who makes that call based on that alone then I don't think you'd want a lot of candidates on the short list of viable options.

All a coach has to do is pretty much ask for a booth review.

And hell no. Jones's teams have beaten nobody and even lost to a Muschamp coached Florida team AT HOME.

It sure seems like his team was very mistake prone all game as well. Do not want. He hasn't proven anything yet at Tennessee.

Once again as we've already seen...recruiting means jack if you can't win with it.

He's got Tennessee close to its first bowl in 4 years (yes he's still got to win one game and should against a terribe Vanderbilt team), his recruits are impacting that team already (can't say that about most Hoke recruits in his tenure), he coaches in the best conference in College Football and he's done a lot there in two years. Is he a sexy hire? Probably not because everyone is on this Harbaugh or bust train. Who's your hire if they miss on Harbaugh?

Right there with you.  Jones isn't at the top of my (or anyone's that I know of) list, but if shooting for the moon with a Harbaugh doesn't work out, I think Butch Jones would be a good hire.

Assuming they beat Vandy next week, they'll be going to a bowl game for the first time since 2010 after the disasters that were Lane Kiffin and Derek Dooley.

Remember, just because we type good things about a guy doesn't mean he's at the top of our collective lists.  I think Butch Jones is a good football coach, a better football coach than Brady Hoke, would be a good hire at UM, but not as good as the Harbaughs or Les Miles.

There was a game a week or two ago where the coach challenged a spot to get 3 more yards... which still wouldnt have been a first down... in the first quarter... in their own territory... and he was wrong.

Watched the game, saw the play, agree with most of what you typed

But...

He rolled the dice.  Win that challenge, you get the ball near midfield with timeouts.  Don't challenge, you MAYBE get the ball somewhere between your goal line and the 20, with no timeouts, and likely 25-30 seconds on the game clock.

Not recovering the onsides kick basically killed the chances.

It's obvious you don't want Butch Jones to be the next HC at Michigan, and that's all fine, well, and good.  But come on, a bull crap hyperbole like "worst challenge ever" absolutely DESTROYS your credibility.

You're talking about challenging a kick that they ruled only went 9.5 yards. A kick they recovered and was over turned because it didnt go the full 10 yards but was extremely close? I didn't see the play but I'm assuming there was 1:20 - 1:30 with one time out. That's far from the dumbest challenge ever. How many times do you see something in a game that you the viewer or even the announcer are 100% sure will go the other way get over turned? In this case you're talking about a foot and a half
