B1G apologizes for roughing the kicker call

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Per Brandstatter on the Inside Michigan Football radio show going on right now, the B1G apparently apologized for the awful roughing the punter call that nobody on Earth agreed with.

They should apologize for having any of those refs calling a major college game.

edit: Balas article on it

Harbaugh got apology from the BT about roughing the kicker call. Plus, he loves James Earl Jones' voiced intro, more https://t.co/A2Q4o0qSz1

No kidding.

And then you factor in the Oregon State punter not having field smarts and falling on the ball instead of kicking it out for a safety.

That play was ballgame and killed any hope Oregon State had. Michigan punching it in to go up 10 at half as opposed to 3 or 5 was also huge.

According to the Expected Points charts at advancedfootballanalytics.com the difference between first down on your own 40 and first down on the other team's three is four points. It becomes slightly more late in a half, but it's never less than four.

The only time the safety isn't the play is if the clock's already run out. Then you just want to cover up.

If he takes the safety, UM gets two and the Beavs kick it back to UM. UM likely gets the ball somewhere between its own 30-40 and has about a minute and a half and one timeout to drive. Its possible UM could've scored a TD and ended up with nine off the bad snap, but its more likely they only get the two, or just 5 (adding a field goal).

Taking a safety would be the best play, but hard to think that through in realtime when you are trying to keep the team from recovering the fumble, and also trying to not be smashed.

Had the Beaver punter kicked the ball backwards out of the endzone, he would have incurred an illegal kick penalty which includes a loss of down.  Someone said on TV that such a kick is a spot foul, and would have given Michigan the option of accepting the penalty and taking the ball at the ~1 1/2 yard line. (Batting the ball with his hands wouldn't have incurred a penalty, however.)

The rule wording is a little clumsy.  I couldn't nail down definitively that it was a spot foul.  The best I could do with the time I'm willing to spend is to list the three sections below with the caveat that the wording of the references between them isn't rigorous.

So you have to be even smarter than that, WD ;)

as Aussie guy too?

He seemed totally clueless as to what to do in that situation.  Punter HAS to know to pick up the ball on the run and just keep going out of the end zone.  He picked it up at the 2 and actually tried to turn around and run upfield with it.  Really really stupid, but possibly understandable if he's reasonably new to American football.

Well, if he had been watching game film of Michigan's special teams from the previous few seasons, he might have had reason to think there would be no player within 15 yards of him once he recovered the errant snap, so who knows?
