It looks like the roster is fully up to date. Peters, Sims and Martin are gone as well. No Kent listed at all is another sign towards him taking a medical.

Any other surprise names missing from the roster?

21 Freshman walk-ons.  I never knew there were that many each year.  Does anyone know how these kids factor in to the practices each day?  You've always heard about kids being "tackling dummies" - are these them or does that not really exist?

I don't think that's quite right. They can't start fall camp with more than 105 players. That's when the cap goes into effect. Once classes start or the first game is played, there's no limit. I guess the point is to lessen the burden on walkons not expected to play. They'd have to pay their own way just for practice.

This reinforces the general theory of college football numbering:

  • Numbers in the single digits and teens are the most desirable
  • The 20s are okay as well
  • The 30s, 40s, and 60s are decidedly unsexy
  • Numbers in the 50s are pretty cool if you're a big guy

Only two number changes to report of guys who were already on the roster before this update.

Brendan White changed from #29 to #18

Ryan Hayes changed from #60 to #76 and is now listed as an OT

Keegan got 77... I wonder if that was part of the recruitment package to entice him... for I figured Hayes would have been given that number...

Numbers Available on Offense: 1, 5, 14, 17, 26, 27, 29, 32, 34, 37, 56, 57, 63, 65, 67 (Jess Speight, 2018 Scout Team Offensive Player of the Year, apparently has moved to defense), 69, 80, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 99

Numbers Available on Defense: 22, 25, 28, 35, 36, 46, 51, 52, 53, 55, 56, 59, 60, 61, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 68, 69, 70, 72, 73, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 79, 81, 82, 84, 85, 86, 89, 92, 93, 94

I’m old, so for me:

Numbers 5 (Paul Hornung), 32 (Jim Brown, Franco Harris and Marcus Allen) and 34 (Walter Payton, Thurman Thomas and Earl Campbell) seem like good numbers for running backs;

Numbers 63 (Gene Upshaw) and 65 (Tom Mack) seem like good numbers for offensive linemen;

Numbers 51 (Dick Butkus), 52 (Ray Lewis), 53 (Harry Carson), 54 (Brian Urlacher), 55 (Junior Seau), 56 (Lawrence Taylor), 60 (Chuck Bednarik), 63 (Willie Lanier) and 66 (Ray Nitschke and recently deceased Nick Buoniconti) seem like good numbers for linebackers; and

Numbers 74 (Henry Jordan, Bob Lilly and Merlin Olsen) and 75 ("Mean Joe" Greene and Howie Long) seem like good numbers for defensive linemen.

All of those men are in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
