Portal Hello: Nimari Burnett Comment Count

Matt EM April 12th, 2023 at 9:44 AM

Michigan kick-started a roster overhaul when former Alabama guard Nimari Burnett announced his transfer to Michigan two weeks ago.

It's been a long road to Ann Arbor for Burnett, spending his freshman campaign at Texas Tech prior to landing at Alabama via the portal at season's end. A torn ACL cost Nimari his sophomore season with the Crimson Tide and he was once again limited this year with wrist surgery that forced him to miss a month of action after starting the first nine games of the season. It's fair to say this addition isn't quite the splash it would've been in 2020 when Burnett was a 5-star HS prospect, but it is a move that projects to give the Wolverines some much needed perimeter defense.

SCOUTING

Nimari's role at Alabama was very much that of a catch + shoot floorspacer. Of Burnett's 125 FG attempts last season, 84 were from beyond the arc, with only 8 of the aforementioned being of the pull-up variety.

While a 32% mark from distance doesn't do much to move the needle independently, there were some nice flashes of movement shooting across multiple games to suggest some upside there.

While I think Nimari is a better shooter than the percentages indicate, the ability to finish at the rim is also intriguing. Burnett is very lengthy for a guard, with a reported wingspan of 6'9.5 and some explosiveness when going off two feet. It doesn't appear the ACL injury compromised the verticality based on film review as seen below, as he can finish over bigs with authority.

There's enough flashes in tandem with the HS pedigree to suggest he's a good release valve against a compromised defense, particularly in a B10 conference that is limited from an athletic perspective.

[Hit THE JUMP for the rest]

Let's be clear, Nimari isn't going to be a primary on-ball option with a Michigan squad featuring Caleb Love and Dug McDaniel. But that doesn't mean he can't recapture some of his playmaking chops that we saw in HS, and occasionally at Alabama.

As a more ancillary option, Burnett won't be tasked with running ballscreens in volume. Against a compromised defense though, his vision and passing ability can have a lot of utility once he draws a secondary defender as we see in the clips above.

Much of the offensive projection comes down to betting on an increased role being the driving factor that allows the aforementioned flashes and HS pedigree to become a consistently productive upperclassmen. But Burnett seems like more of a sure thing on the other side of the court.

Nimari has incredible length at the guard position, a developed frame and above-average agility. From a physical perspective, he checks all the boxes generally associated with an impact POA (point of attack) defender at the college level.

Burnett certainly didn't blow anyone away with his offensive production at Alabama, that he was able to carve out 15 minutes per game for the #3 defense in the country per Kenpom is a testament to his defensive prowess. Coach Nate Oats had four guards getting real rotational minutes exclusive of Nimari, so depth was not an issue in the backcourt. Burnett forced his way on to the court because of his defense, period.

PROJECTION

Things are fairly simple on the offensive end considering the surrounding backcourt personnel. Nimari's primary role is to be a play-finisher as opposed to a shot creator. Most of Burnett's shots in the half-court are going to come via catch + shoot triples, attacking closeouts and off-cuts/screens. He's not going to be a volume on-ball type in Ann Arbor, but will likely see limited reps in bench units or when matchups are favorable.

Depending on how the roster fills out with the potential for more attrition/portal additions, Nimari seems like a safe bet to be third-fourth option. A fully optimized version of Burnett probably looks something like 9-12ppg on 35% from distance. Don't think he gets more than 7-8 FGAs per game in the box score, but he does draw fouls at a solid clip (32.8 FT rate last season), so double digit scoring isn't unreasonable.

Defense is where Nimari can make a real difference. He's going to be one of the better athletes at the guard position in the B10 and should be able to give the Wolverines a much-needed perimeter stopper to a certain extent. He's probably slated to defend the opposition's best scoring guard on a nightly basis next season. And while Burnett is a bit undersized to defend wings from a sheer size perspective, the length in tandem with his agility and strength will likely him a viable option against that positional group at the college level. Michigan was #351 in defensive TO rate last season, and Nimari should provide some immediate help in that area, particularly with Tarris Reed the last line of defense on the backend.

In a nutshell, we are finally going to have a defense this upcoming year.  That in itself is exciting.  I was so fucking sick of watching our players not box out, and just stand their waiting/watching others get the rebound.  And the effort of one of our bigs not hustling for many loose balls (not you Reed!) just pissed me off.

The big question will be, will the improvement of our defense be more than the degradation of our offense?  I think so.

I agree with this as well. I think this is a big upgrade to the defensive side of the ball, but have no clue how this offense is about to look going forward.

For the last 3 years Michigan was able to get a lot of open looks due to Hunter having people collapse on him and he was a great passer out of the post. The problem is the last two years he was not surrounded with great shooters like the 2021 squad and there was a lot of wide open bricks.

I'm sure Tarris Reed will take a SO jump, but I saw nothing this past season that suggested he is even close to the passer Hunter was. The current starting 5 of Dug, Love, Burnett?, uh transfer 4? and Reed doesn't sound like its going to be torching nets. Obviously there's a lot of portal shopping left.

Yeah, the offense is going to be a major question mark.

Love can "create" questionable shots for himself, ditto for Dug.  But there's really no one on the roster that's shown he can create good shots for himself or others.

I think Juwan's offensive coaching has been excellent though.  Surprisingly, the staffs strong suit.  So it'll be a test to see whether they can scheme some guys open.

Their best offense might end up being Love or Dug jacking up meh shots and Burnett/Reed/PF crashing the boards.

Yess!

UM was a life suck on D last year especially. More Grit. Determination.

Nose in the offensive player’s chest. Stay grounded & vertical on the shot w/block attempts targeted 9-12” from shot release point. Maybe deflect it - for sure disrupt shooter’s visual field. Block out with ferocity unknown to humanity. Give no ground.

I don't want to go full Rutgers, but I like the idea of an athletic, long, defensively pesky team. It may make for some ugly 62-58 wins, but I'll take that over a bunch more 78-74 losses.

CM shot 45-50% in the 2 point area - on 7-8 shots a night.

This guy shoots upper 20s to mid 30s in 2 point area - on 2 shots a night. (For reference the much maligned TWIII shot upper 30s in just under 2 shots a night last year)

Both players struggled from 3 point range at 30-32% range.

Matthews could create his own shot a lot better, and also hit those shots.  Hopefully on the defensive side they are like for like but not on offense.

Burnett shot 46% from two last year.  Curious about where you're seeing 20s to 30s.

2 shots a night was on less than half the minutes.  His usage was almost 20% so pretty similar to Matthews in that regard.

I do agree Matthews was a solid creator and Burnett does not appear to be.

Michigan hasn't crashed the offensive boards or run a fast break in years. The new personnel is better suited to add these two weapons to the offenses arsenal. This should off set the expected regression in half court sets.

we don't fast break because we don't create turnovers (#351!!!) and the rest of the big ten doesn't go for OREBs so there are almost no opportunities off boards.

but yeah, if we can up the steals which these guys should be able to do, then we'll fast break more.

I think we'll probably have to crash the OREBs a bit more too.  Trade off being that we'll get run on more.

Nice writeup.  Like others, I'm excited by the prospect of a good defense next year.  I'm looking forward to the writeups on our other new additions, Love and Jackson.

Looks like we're out of scholarships but we might have another portal addition if Jace goes to walkon and/or there's another unexpected player loss.  There is still a lot of talent in the portal.  Yohan Traore looks intriguing - last I checked he's down to a final four of Texas Tech, Auburn, Gonzaga and Michigan. Would he be a good fit?

I can see the potential fit for Nimari, as well as Love and Jackson (to a lesser extent), but man is the coaching staff going to have a HUGE challenge in getting all of these misfit toys assembled into a cohesive team that can actually make the tournament.

It is not impossible to do, and clearly the staff had to take these types of chances in the portal, but I wouldn't bet much money on it actually being successful.

I think we should be fine as there has been an incredible amount of turnover every year Howard has been here.

2019-20: Inherited a team that lost top 3 lead scorers to the NBA Draft, won the battle for Atlantis, jumped from unranked to #4 in the AP, Covid ended the season.

2020-21: Lost Xavier Simpson and Jon Teske and both their backups but replaced them with Mike Smith, Chaundee Brown, and Hunter. Won the regular-season Big Ten Championship (first since 2014), received the No. 1 seed, and advanced to the Elite Eight.

2021-22: Lost Mike Smith, Chaundee Brown, Isaiah Livers, Franz Wagner. He added DeVante' Jones and one of the highest ranked recruiting classes in history. The team struggled with all the new parts but advanced to the Sweet 16.

2022-23: Lost De’vante Jones, Eli Brooks, Frankie Collins (weird transfer), Caleb Houston, and Mousa Diabate. Blew a chance at NIT “redemption”.

This last year was not great but we almost made the tourney despite losing 5 guys, missing on Shannon for silly reasons, and Llewellyn getting hurt.

Dug will take a soph leap, and Love with play hero ball to a degree.  Reed will get some of those misses in as putbacks.  And that's going to be the bulk of offense.  I just don't see it with Reed as a focal point facilitator of offense unless his game dramatically improves offensively.

Maybe Llewellyn returns and can help some.

It would be nice to get a scoring wing to add to this mix.  I am not counting on freshman, one of which it sounds like may not even make it to campus.

It looks pretty rough to me, going to be a lot of games in the 60s and hopefully Love puts some effort into defense as he is going to be playing upper 30s per night for us to get over 60.

Not mentioned but pretty shocking % in the 2 pointer range - 28% as a freshman and 37% as a sophomore.  Luckily only about 2 shots per game in that range.
