1. Offense vs Purdue

starts at 1:00

Blocking was there—Purdue kept delivering free hitters, but how do you grade it if the free hitter's a cornerback versus Edwards? Surprised that JJ only threw 17 passes—felt like he was slinging it. We can remember each one because they were all remarkable. Also remarkable was true freshman Colston Loveland, because that was so smooth. Don't bulk up—just be you! And then Donovan Edwards: star performance. Set up blocks, ran around guys.

2. Defense vs Purdue

starts at 47:45

Purdue was moving the ball, part of that was Aidan O'Connell and Chuck Sizzle were balling. Part of it was Moten, who had at least four really bad breakdowns in one drive. Sometimes he was running into Michael Barrett, who also struggled that drive. How come our LBs don't chip? Harrell played well, spin-off sack vs the bad RT. Okie shoved a guy into O'Connell's legs. The DTs were making him uncomfortable. Will Johnson: Dude. This is what happens with the 5-star freshmen.

3. Hot Takes, Special Teams and Game Theory

starts at 1:09:57

The fake punt: Welschof needs to come up on the edge. Sad field goals. Michigan tried a new style punt. Swinging gate 2PC was fun, win percentage doesn't change from 16 (99%) to 17 (99%) or 15 (99%) so whatever. Time management at the end of the half: go for it on 4th and 2? Maybe just don't give them a drive. Officials: If your review takes 4 minutes and 32 seconds you should be shot at midfield. Running into the kicker: wasn't—he touched the ball, should be a carve-out if the punter isn't a punter because he drops it or something. M got a ticky-tack illegal formation, they got away with a facemask horrible, Okie got away with terrible acting.

4. Hoops vs Kentucky & Virginia

starts at 1:40:23

Sucks that they lost both games, also sucks that it looks like we're going to lose Llewellin for the season. Good that they were able to compete with two good teams. Losing Frankie is such a bummer, cold take. Turn Kobe Bufkin into the PG, run the offense out of Hunter, see if Barnes can be your two so you don't have too many limited defenders on the court at once.

Argh.....why do you guys think Barnes is a good defender??  I am not opposed to the general idea of playing him with Kobe, but this site has a narrative around Barnes being a good defender and I can't figure out why. He will have to play if JL is done....so I guess we will find out.  But there's no data that suggests he's good yet.

It felt to me the running game took a lot longer to get going without Corum in there. I hope we can get the Edwards and Mullings (?!) close enough to Corum to get through the next two opponents.

did not touch the ball that i saw on the punt, but would love to see a better view.

and regardless of whether he touched it or not, when the punter starts running like these aussie ones, then all bets should be off re: touching them.   those rules were put in place for the standard punter that is a statute with a swinging leg, not for the relatively new phenomenon of run-around aussie guys.

Yep.  These rules need changing.  Badly.  In this case, the punter actually moved the ball to a carrying position before resetting to punt.  Should be classified as a RB after the football move.

Here's the solution:

  • Catch the ball and punt, and stay protected.
  • Catch the ball and do ANYTHING but start your kicking motion, and you should lose all protection, even if you do eventually kick.

It's too hard for defenses to divine the intentions of these punters right now.

"Dink around and find out" should've been the tagline.

P.S. I would say Edwards vs. a cornerback is an RPS push.  It comes down to who's better, and/or who's having a better game.

Looking forward to listening. I appreciate the resources this site offers.

On another note, as a fat balding middle-aged proud Walmart Wolverine, I want to stress how how great it is to be a fan right now. This is what we have been waiting for and it's awesome!

I've been loyal since my brother and I saw Michigan whollop Stanford in 1976 and this year reminds me of that day when I was 12.

This is what it is all about.

Michigan is a beacon of hope in a country filled with universities like OSU: No class, no grades, we aint come to play school, play for the NFL, no team, urban meyer types. And I mean all of that with reference to OUTSIDE of football.

Michigan is exceptional in it's requirements, but if every university instilled the same values that M does then I think this country would be in a much better place than it currently is.

I would consider Northwestern or Stanford in the category of "exceptional".  Michigan is more pragmatic when it comes to recruiting and treatment of elite athletes.  That said, they do stop short of many of the widespread excesses.  The term "student-athlete" was fraudulent from the start, but Michigan can make it seem like a real thing at times.

I'm a few years older than you Fatpete, so you might not recall that we'd had a perfect season ruined by Stanford in the Rose Bowl a few years earlier, on a FG as time expired.

I still harbored hate for Stanford for that when they rolled into Michigan Stadium (Keith Jackson had yet to coin The Big House moniker).

If I recall correctly without resorting to Google, Michigan won 49-3 that day? I felt a small amount of vindication!

Replay officials apparently need to have it re-emphasized constantly:You are NOT making the call. The call has already been made. Your ONLY job is to see if there is INDISPUTABLE video evidence that the call on the field was wrong and should be reversed. If you’re looking at clips 3, 4, 5 times trying to make up your mind, then the evidence clearly isn’t indisputable, and the call on the field should stand.

Game was almost a total ref show.  The explanation for stopping the play before the punt (right before the questionable lack of roughing call) had me cracking up. “Uh, kicking team substituted without giving receiving team a chance to substitute even though they didn’t try to substitute, also come to think of it if we held the snap for substitution then it would have been a delay of game OOPS shouldn’t say that with my mic on, uh stutter stammer replay fourth down.”

I actually thought Purdue was trying something tricky there at first. You have to whistle that dead because if they don't the guy is sneaking on the field as they snap it, and the defense doesn't have anyone on him. The refs couldn't get to the ball before they snapped it but that isn't a penalty, so I don't know what else they could have done except blow the play dead.

That's what we kept saying to each throughout the 11 minute 33 second delay. How could anything be indisputable, or irrefutable, or undeniable, or in any other way positively demonstrated if it takes that long and that many views?!

The absolute LIMIT allowed should be 30 seconds, because anything that takes longer clearly isn't indisputable - they're disputing it among themselves interminably!

This happened in a hoops game about 3-4 years ago - a delay of similar length while they blew up to the micro pixel a dispute over a last touched o.o b. ball.

Fucking craziness!

My first guess would be, some kind of technical issue.  Unlikely, but it happens.

Back when I was covering weekends for an IT company, one Sunday afternoon I got a call from a client angrily reporting that they'd lost their stream and they had a live event starting imminently.  The "event" was an NFL head coach postgame presser.  I was sweating bullets that day.

I love that you recognize the importance of that play to the ultimate game flow Seth!

As they lined up i said aloud "get cute here Day! You're dominating this game, but that's not enough for you! You need to try to embarrass Michigan!"

And he did not disappoint!

Perusing the selection from underground printing now. I was really disappointed and surprised to see there was not much merchandise at the championship game in Indianapolis. Was it there and I just missed it?
