Things discussed:

  • Shutting down Carsen Edwards was a team effort
  • Surprised Haarms hasn't progressed more.
  • Northwestern hit a lot of weird shots, good defensive team.
  • Poole and Brazdeikis are their best isolation players but that's not their offense
  • Brian not so hard on Austin Davis—blamed the refs.
  • The 14-2 run with Teske on the bench with foul trouble was too stark
  • Could use less Matthews usage but that's not gonna change
  • Post-Michigan coaching comments
  • Defensive strategy leads to fewer fouls: not a lot of help/reach-ins
  • The Big Ten is deep, some poor bubble team is going 8-12 in this league.

1. North Carolina

starts at 1:00

People are there for a 9:30 p.m. tip on a Wednesday and Crisler has been *loud*. Lotta Carolina fans got to witness their team's defenestration too. Is Michigan a blue blood? When Poole is your "weak point" your defense isn't vulnerable. Teske five blocks vs one of the most athletic teams in the country. CM's fall-away from 10 feet is not our favorite shot but it's valuable as a late clock idea. Iggy segment starts at 16 minutes.

2. Purdue

starts at 29:52

Boilers' schedule is brutal to start. Teske vs. Painter: if he's going to hit threes from the top of the key Painter's got nothing left. Carsen Edwards had 50% usage. Poole is now on fire. Prevented a three-centric team from shooting them.

3. Hoops Season Outlook

starts at 52:36

Is this a Top Seed? Normally a Beilein team is operating like this in February. Big Ten is manageable, probably already played the highest ranked opponents on the schedule. Have a trip to Breslin in their future. Free throw shooting: if Matthews can stay at 70. Big Ten is good this year though.

4. Not Hockey

Starts at 1:14:50

Why can't we get these games on TV? What has Warde done? This would be a good thing to do. State plays with six goalies on the ice at a time. Gotta make some Grade A stops because nobody can live at .830. Gonna be an off year or two while we wait for Mel's guys to grow up.

I broke it up by times so you could skip past the bad thing if you don't want to talk about the bad thing.

Things discussed:

1. Disaster in Columbus (at 1:00)

  • Ed rips on Don Brown for the South Carolina game
  • 2016 and 2017 Michigan vastly out-schemed Ohio State, so it's not an overall pattern.
  • The problem is Michigan had the #1 defense so couldn't anticipate their flaws. At halftime, fine, you can't get to the quarterback and can't live with Watson anymore. Change it up!
  • OSU probably going back to being a Tate Martell offense next year
  • Catch three balls.
  • Bowl destination?

2. Glory in Crisler (at 19:51)

  • Too soon to talk Monday Night
  • Why was Michigan State the consensus pick for the B1G? This year's is a better team than last year's.
  • Craig: Teske was the player of the game: UNC didn't want anything to do with under the basket. Brian: No it's CM. Sam: No it's Iggy. Wait we all forgot Livers
  • Turned it into a halfcourt game.
  • Versus last Novembers
  • Purdue preview

Maybe we weren't trying to win, maybe our goal here was Urban Meyer's redemption.

2. The Defense

3. So, Basketball

starts at 27:32

Wow this part actually made us feel good for a moment. Livers allows Michigan to play five out and unlock their switching skills, reminds us a little of Roby. If you don't want that Michigan you have to play Teske. Eli Brooks: Surprise Microwave.

4. How to Pronounce Zebra

Northern or "Winners" grits starts with regular grits but I mix in garlic and cheese. Then I add a sunny side up egg, mushrooms, grilled onions, and feta cheese. Got it from The Bomber in Ypsi. David cooks eggs a bad way.

--------------------------------------------

1. IU AFTER UFR

starts at 1:00

Seth plays the panic.gif guy, badly. The first Ramsey run was probably a poorly executed play where Dwumfour missed the stunt. Paye was spied on one play and got a late jump on the play. Kinnel got tempoed on a slot fade. Indiana used a mesh concept to lose Watson on a legal pick. Indiana is a similar rushing attack to Ohio State and Michigan will probably have to use a 5th linebacker against the Buckeyes. Michigan’s DT’s are just guys. The Hoosiers had a good game plan to take out Michigan’s 4 man pass rush. Michigan went conservative on offense late and it was the right thing to do. Andrew Stueber had his first real moment and he looked pretty good.

2. OSU Preview

starts at 26:15

Brian thinks Ohio State is bad and is terrified. Seth thinks Ohio State is bad, entitled, and more terrified. The Buckeyes are no longer an automatic third and short team without JT. Mesh is OSU’s base play. Haskins can run but he’s not very athletic and avoids contact even though he’s big. JK Dobbins isn’t as effective as he was last year. Haskins is not comfortable if you pressure him at all. Michigan will want to isolate Gary/Uche/Winovich against Isaiah Prince, who struggled against Carter Coughlin and Kenny Wilekes of Minnesota and MSU. OSU is a YAC team. Brian has a theory about OSU’s defense, which is very poorly coached. Their defensive line is still pretty good but without Bosa, it’s not as devastating as it could be. Jonathan Cooper is just a guy while Chase Young is going to be a star. Landers and Jones are good in the interior.

3. The Bacon Off the Rails Podcast

starts at 46:16

Bacon believes that it’s Michigan’s year. Seth shouldn’t be a college football program and we invent the Seth Rule. Bacon starts spreading Brian Kelly rumors and the guys debate all different kinds of head coaching rumors.

4. Gimmicky Top Five Worst Takes of the Offseason wsg Nick Hopwood

starts at 1:14:05

The rule is that for Seth and Brian, they have to pick at least 2 that are their own. Nick is a sponsor so he doesn’t have to stick to his takes, so he sticks to ours.

MUSIC:

This week we feature a band I saw once in 2002 and bought their album, EchoBrain. I don’t know anything else about them but they played with the Starlight Mints and Polyphonic Spree that one time and sounded like the Stones but their album isn’t like the Stones at all, but the intros sound good.

--------------------------------------------

1. The Offense

starts at 1:00

IU’s dirty play: The O’Neill crew has got to go! Shea came down a little from his Rutgers game level, Michigan did NOT want to run him but had to due to circumstances. Running game didn’t get big plays, protection issues resurfaced with Steuber. Showed some new things, left a lot in the bag.

2. The Defense

starts at 32:20

The DTs are, after all, just guys. DeBord brings out the tempo and gets his 17 first half points, then gets 3 after the adjustment. The adjustment: another guy in the box. Ramsey runs were all different but annoying events. He was also quite good at running away and throwing away (or just throwing it away and not getting flagged, which led to their field goal).

3. Special Teams/Feelingsball

starts at 53:16

Breaking down the ten(?) deadly sins of the end of the first half, just one of which wasn’t on Michigan. IU fake punt was at the dumbest part of the field AND tried to edge Devin Bush (how did that work out for you?). Moody, Moody, Moody, Moody, Moody, Moody.

4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac

Starts at 1:14:31

Iowa-Illinois: blerp. Wisconsin-Purdue: low-scoring affair becomes a humdinger in the 4th and overtime. Purdue is an in-season disappointment. Penn State-Rutgers was a Rutger but PSU is back to the salt mines—Frames Janklin is punting from the Rutgers 37 on 4th and 4. State loses 9-6 to Nebraska on a Sparty No! All the sharps were betting Minnesota over Northwestern, who’s warming up shirtless and channeling the MSU DISRESPEKT. And the Maryland-OSU gongshow. McFarland got hurt or else he gets the Biakabutuka. Haskins has to run the things they saved for Michigan. Jamie’s done with Tom Allen. Ohio State can’t fix this defense in a week. Long discussion on The Game. Get this one or you’ll never get anything. OSU won all six of their coin flip games this year. Football Armageddon II: Let’s go kill ‘em!

--------------------------------------------

1. RUFRgers

starts at 1:00

A very uninteresting game. Michigan didn’t play their best game, but didn’t need to. Shea never pulled the ball. Did JH troll James Franklin? Tru Wilson had a good game. Craig thinks it’ll be a three-way RB battle next year with Evans, Wilson, and Charbonnet. Lots and lots of Down G. Didn’t run a lot of pistol in this game because the zone read wasn’t a legitimate threat. Shea had a terrific game. Higdon missed a few cuts. Pass protection in the UFR was 100% (!!!). Devin Gil had a really rough game, needs to stay in his lane. Gary had a terrific game.

2. Previewing Indiana

starts at 25:30

Craig’s numbers project a 28- or 29-point win for Michigan. He thinks their record indicates they may do better than that though. Seth rebuts by mentioning that Indiana has gotten a lot of turnover luck and is not a good team. However, Indiana is the forever ChaosTeam for as long as Seth has been a fan. The Hoosiers have zero pass rush whatsoever. Shea shouldn’t need to run this week against a depleted defense. Offense isn’t awful and Peyton Ramsey has a lot of receiving options.

3. Revenge Tour: Nova

starts at 1:45:44

Seth brags about his tweets and Craig asks people about the game at a drugstore. It was a complete defensive domination, but even Craig didn’t expect Brazdeikis to have the game that he did. The charge call early on set the tone for the game. Simpson might be the best defensive point guard Craig has ever seen. Craig thinks that Brooks and Livers are the best shooters on a team that can’t shoot. George Washington looks bad.

4. Gimmicky Top Five New Stadium Traditions

starts at 1:02:14

Seth and Craig discuss the fun new things we yell this year. Of course as soon as we finished up Wangler called so we’ll get him on the podcast soon.

Seth November 16th, 2018 at 8:00 AM

Note: Brian is not feeling well so he missed this episode. Craig Ross and Johnny Wangler will be joining me on MGoRadio this afternoon instead.

Things discussed:

  • Rutger: Brown admitted they got got by the zipper motion, wanted to keep that to 12 yards
  • Weather was a factor
  • Patterson ain't pulling.
  • Indiana: the Ball State game?
  • Ramsey is more conservative with the football this year
  • Their defense gets no pressure, can't tackle
  • Nova on the road: defense travels.
  • Not last year's Nova, but they brought back Paschal and some 5-stars.
  • Iggy! Played defense like Simpson, in his 3rd game in college, on the road, versus the defending champs!
  • Flexibility: 7-guy rotation but Livers is the hot shooter and lets M go five out
  • Simpson and Teske both candidates for DPoY. Juggernaut?
  • Teske can swat shots from guys after they get by him.
  • M got themselves some easy shots at the rim too.
  • They let Matthews go right.

--------------------------------------------

1. The Offense

starts at 1:00

Michigan takes passing practice, Shea locked on for 3rd down. Left a couple of posts to DPJ short but that Saquan Hampton made good plays. Higdon bad cuts: two in a row for the 4th down we didn’t get. Another bad bounce when a cut could have had 4. Tru was better at that. Long discussion on the receivers. Will DPJ get this FFFF star?

2. The Defense

starts at 27:18

Tried to tell you: Pacheko is the Chris Evans! Handing out negatives for the touchdown, a few other bad edge sets. WLB Sweepstakes was a solid win for Ross: thumpin hit but more impressive was taking down a TE in space in the early 4th. No Metellus no Solomon, Paye and Lavert Hill went out. Sad pass to Rescigno ruins the passing Rutger. Bush and Gary are still in for the 4th: Gary’s health vs half the people in the stands were Gary's friends and family.

3. Special Teams/Feelingsball

starts at 27:48

Coaches vs Kickoffs: Moody has discovered skying them to the 15 is the right spot to entice a bringout. Hudson somehow missed his block. Going for it on 4th was correct, woulda gone for it on 4th and 3 at the end of the half but it’s fine: Worst thing you can do is go into the half at 21-14. Roughing the Passer: Hit affected the arc of the ball. He hit him and momentum went to the ground. Poor Winovich. BAND RUTGER: Seth is mad on behalf of M fans who wanted tickets.

4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac

Starts at 56:28

Iowa-Northwestern wasn’t exactly Bedlam, but Bowser gives them a running game on a night Thorson looked like a freshman again. Ferentz-Fant divorce. What the hell just happened game of the week: Minnesota dominates Purdue. IU survives a Maryland-has-an-offense-game (quarter scores read 6-9-8-9) to set up an Oaken Bucket for a bowl. MSU-OSU a derpfest until Dantonio throws the game. Lewerke is broken, Willekes dominated OSU’s OTs, OSU’s punter had a 4-yard punt and was the player of the game. FFFF’ing this game: three trouble spots on their OL? MSU receivers running open all game. Scary part: Ohio State can run the ball but if you move Haskins he doesn’t hit intermediate stuff and doesn’t want to be touched. Penn State dominated Wisconsin OL on passing downs. Nebraska-Illinois a battle of defenseless programs.
