--------------------------------------------

1. The Offense

starts at 1:00

Michigan takes passing practice, Shea locked on for 3rd down. Left a couple of posts to DPJ short but that Saquan Hampton made good plays. Higdon bad cuts: two in a row for the 4th down we didn’t get. Another bad bounce when a cut could have had 4. Tru was better at that. Long discussion on the receivers. Will DPJ get this FFFF star?

2. The Defense

starts at 27:18

Tried to tell you: Pacheko is the Chris Evans! Handing out negatives for the touchdown, a few other bad edge sets. WLB Sweepstakes was a solid win for Ross: thumpin hit but more impressive was taking down a TE in space in the early 4th. No Metellus no Solomon, Paye and Lavert Hill went out. Sad pass to Rescigno ruins the passing Rutger. Bush and Gary are still in for the 4th: Gary’s health vs half the people in the stands were Gary's friends and family.

3. Special Teams/Feelingsball

starts at 27:48

Coaches vs Kickoffs: Moody has discovered skying them to the 15 is the right spot to entice a bringout. Hudson somehow missed his block. Going for it on 4th was correct, woulda gone for it on 4th and 3 at the end of the half but it’s fine: Worst thing you can do is go into the half at 21-14. Roughing the Passer: Hit affected the arc of the ball. He hit him and momentum went to the ground. Poor Winovich. BAND RUTGER: Seth is mad on behalf of M fans who wanted tickets.

4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac

Starts at 56:28

Iowa-Northwestern wasn’t exactly Bedlam, but Bowser gives them a running game on a night Thorson looked like a freshman again. Ferentz-Fant divorce. What the hell just happened game of the week: Minnesota dominates Purdue. IU survives a Maryland-has-an-offense-game (quarter scores read 6-9-8-9) to set up an Oaken Bucket for a bowl. MSU-OSU a derpfest until Dantonio throws the game. Lewerke is broken, Willekes dominated OSU’s OTs, OSU’s punter had a 4-yard punt and was the player of the game. FFFF’ing this game: three trouble spots on their OL? MSU receivers running open all game. Scary part: Ohio State can run the ball but if you move Haskins he doesn’t hit intermediate stuff and doesn’t want to be touched. Penn State dominated Wisconsin OL on passing downs. Nebraska-Illinois a battle of defenseless programs.

--------------------------------------------

1. Penn State After UFR

starts at 1:00

Michigan should’ve put this game away earlier. Offense feels much more dynamic and unpredictable. Joe Moorhead being gone helped. What happens next year after the Wile E. Coyote year? Shea Patterson had his best game on the ground of his season. Very few missed reads. McKeon has a lot of improvement to make in blocking but he has a lot on his plate. An RPO appeared! All hail Warinner and Don Brown. Gary is back, same guy as before.

2. Across the Crooked Blue Line w/ Steve Lorenz

starts at 28:52

We troubleshoot live on air until Steve Lorenz officially comes through. We chat about 2019 and 2020 Michigan recruiting. Michigan is in line to sign a monster Top 5 class. Harrison looks good if parents are in. M’s coaches are killing it on the recruiting trail. Coaches feel confident in Eric Gray but we’re hoping he gets up here. DeLoach a guy you can get when you win. High-star wide receivers are hard to come by—Ford is probably staying out West. Can scouting might make that up?

3. Previewing Rutgers

starts at 1:04:03

Marvel is mentioned at the start. Rutgers is incredibly bad, 126th in S&P+. They have a pretty good RB who is reminiscent of small Chris Evans. Rutgers TE is the only guy on their team with a YPC over 10 and he’s out for this game. Offense is 130th, defense is actually a little better. Pass defense stats are not appalling but run defense is complete garbage. Aussie punter and a kicker who isn’t bad. Seth decided to FFFF an entire Rutgers game and tweeted at their LB coach.

4. Previewing Rutgers

starts at 1:20:15

Hockey has had an alarming start to the year. Defense is having a messy start despite returning a lot of veterans. Boka off to a rocky start in particular and goaltending has not helped out. This is a top-heavy forward group and they don’t really have a checking line, but there’s still no excuse for how bad the defense has been. Taking a lot of penalties. In basketball, wasn’t a great beginning but defense was suffocating as expected. Teske looked like an impact defender..

1. Recapping the Last Weeks

starts at 1:00

Michigan has played seven regular season games and two exhibitions, how are they doing? What have we seen when we have been able to see the games? Speaking of, we would like to be able to see more of the games, please fix this.

2. The State of the Team

starts at 21:03

We run down each group on the team and discuss while wondering if they are ahead or behind where we thought they would be. Top line and power play are looking great. Other parts have room to improve. Anthony the goalie makes the case the goalies are being scapegoated to an extent. (of course he does)

3. Sieves and the People Who Associate With Them

starts at 45:15

We talk about the Big Ten as league play kicks off! This league will be awesome this season. ND is up first, and along with OSU they don't look like they have missed a beat. Minnesota is working some things out. PSU and Wisconsin look like they might have found some goaltending, which will raise their ceilings significantly. MSU is competent once again, Danton Cole is turning things around there. Preseason prediction of all B1G teams in the top half of the NCAA is looking good.

4. We talk predictions!

1. TomVH and “The Road to Ann Arbor”

starts at 1:00

Tom VH comes on the podcast to chat about his past with MGoBlog and his new book, The Road to Ann Arbor, which retells some of the great stories of Michigan football recruiting in the last 50 years.

2. Hoops Talk wsg Craig Ross

starts at 27:27

Craig was disappointed that he didn’t get to share his basketball takes on the WTKA Roundtable so he shares them with us. Craig defends Ted Valentine through referee magazine. Brazdeikis can play the 2-3-4 and ambidextrous, Michigan has three tremendous defensive players: Simpson, Teske, and Matthews. Only real question defensively is at shooting guard. Eli Brooks looked good in practices. Teske and Simpson could be a very good pick-and-roll tandem. Craig is hopeful in Simpson’s free throws. Could Brandon Johns play the 5? Michigan is extremely deep. Brian and Craig agree that Michigan is a better team than MSU.

3. Segment 3: MSU Recap and PSU Offense

starts at 52:40

Lewerke was hurt but MSU might have been fortunate for that or else he would have thrown 3 picks. 5 DT’s played about the same number of snaps. Massive RPS blowout on the offense. Shea made some bad reads and we should see some improvement. Still accurate however and his legs are devastating. Are the tackles now good? PSU will be the final exam. If Jon Runyan survives Penn St, he is legit good. Michigan solved the double A gap blitz with satisfaction for the most part.

Penn State lost a lot of their dangerous and large sized pass catchers. Gesicki, Godwin, Allen Robinson are all gone. McSorely’s lost about 1.5 YPA this season. It’s not the same offense as last year. Miles Sanders is not Saquon Barkley and the rushing attack has fallen off this year. The loss of Joe Moorhead is big.

4. Segment 4: PSU Defense Preview

starts at 1:08:03

Penn St has a lot of very good pass rushers and could make Michigan’s life very hard if the Wolverines are trapped in 3rd & longs. Michigan is not a good 3rd and long offense. Yardage on 3rd downs will be important. PSU’s starting defensive tackles are basically just both Mike Dwumfour. Not a lot of run stoppers on the defensive front despite the great pass rushers. This is the type of defense that Michigan has eviscerated in the past. PSU has a very good CB. KJ Hamler is a dangerous kick returner.

WTKA Roundtable 11/1/2018: From the Ivory Tower Comment Count

Seth November 2nd, 2018 at 8:53 AM

Things discussed:

  • Nate Stanley: Dude!
  • Maryland: Dude! Once you have a certain level of money and power you think you lose accountability. How to check this: have a legitimate 3rd party making medical decisions. Any donor who wanted to pull their money: pull your money.
  • MSU-Purdue: dude! State gets the rain again, Blough had his bad day.
  • Penn State: At their most potent when Trace McSorley is running the ball. Make him throw! Alan Robinson wanted to come to Michigan badly—they don’t have anyone like that anymore.
  • McSorley healthy? He ran a 51-yard TD after his knee got banged. He’s performing at a better level than his stats imply but his receivers are his receivers.
  • Their DL has five guys who can get after the quarterback. Two Michael Dwumfour types at DT and three dynamite DEs, including Yetur Gross-Matos who’s playing out of his mind.
  • Nobody can say Oruwariye, nobody in the linebacker level looks like a Linebacker U guy. Can PSU stand up against Michigan’s ground game? Pull out all the Harbaugh and grind them down.
  • Jansen: Brian explains why you don’t run much power against an odd man front. Here’s a graphic from me:

    image

  • Ed Warinner has a play sheet now—Michigan didn’t know what they’re doing with Shea against Notre Dame; maybe Ed’s teaching them how to not suck at spread
  • We want Bama…to win against LSU? Don’t trust the committee to leave out a 1-loss Alabama that doesn’t go to the SEC Championship over a Michigan that wins out.
  • Ferentz still brings up the fact that Chris L. Rucker got out of jail and played against him.

--------------------------------------------

1. The Backcourt

starts at 1:00

Optimistic about the defense: The two most important defensive positions are point guard and center, and everyone else is lanky. PG: Zavier Simpson was excluded from the All-B1G team so let’s revenge tour. Z’s shooting has to get better because can’t hide him as much. More defined role for Eli Brooks. DeJulius to come on later? SG: Poole is our shot at a lethal scorer on this team—can be average defender; no more getting back-cut. Nunez has a defined role. SF: Charles Matthews is still the Kentucky transfer, i.e. the least Beilein player ever, but he goes left sometimes now. More effective as a Beta dog. Can he get more Beilein-y?

The Frontcourt

starts at 29:53

PF: Iggy Buckets is a 40%+ spot-up shooter who took a lot of bad AAU shots. Could be a 1-and-done. Livers is a glue guy, but at 12% usage last year doesn’t bode well—lose the passivity or make an impact as a rebounder. Johns needs a year—do they push him at the 4 or 5? C: Teske is significantly more 1990s big man than Mo but if he can elbow-jump a bit he’s an excellent P&R guy, especially on the re-screen. Adds huge defensive value, including steals. What is Austin Davis? Gotta foul less but MSU went at him and it didn’t work. More on Johns, and some Mr. Basketball chip-on-the-shoulder games with MSU. Castleton is Mo 2.0 with shotblocking, but expecting a redshirt unless Davis is disappointing.

The Rest of the Conference

starts at 53:20

Not great. The unanimous conference favorite from everyone but us is Michigan State, who’s starting Nick Ward and Tillman, and they’re going to be playing Goens 20% of the time, plus McQuaid in a bigger role sans Bridges. Langford’s inefficient deep two game makes you wonder what Beilein would have made that guy. Leaning on Winston, and “Mr. Basketball” Foster Loyer. Then Michigan. Then the morass: IU brings in the biggest impact freshman in the conference in Lankford but making the dance is the goal. OSU lost most everybody from last year. Want to like Iowa—they’re like a parody of MSU; why is their defense so bad? Nebraska: Roby & Palmer & Copeland and experience—should have been a 9-seed last year. UW: what was that? Trying to remember who’s on the rest.

A moment to talk with Ace about what he’s doing now. The GoFundMe might’ve saved his life.

4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac

Starts at 1:25:29

Marcus Ray now believes the best team in the Big Ten is Michigan State with Rocky Lombardi at quarterback. The Iowa 14, and Frames Janklin’s timeouts, attempted timeouts, and icing his own kicker. McSorley’s degradation. Maryland averaged a first down per play vs Lovie’s Lini. Go bowling Terps. Cats for the West! Jonathan Taylor (11 carries for 46 yards) is now a fumbler, Turtle punted on 4th and 2 again and invented the fullback two-minute drill. Northwestern could win the West or not go to a bowl game, or both? David Blough and Purdue got by the MSU ghosts and MSU rain—shoulda given D.J. Knox more carries. A very on-brand IU performance, even when they were down 31-9 Jamie never lost faith that the Hoosiers could come back to tie it then lose in heartbreaking fashion. Angry Minnesota Running Back Hating God. Daniel Faaele making an impact.

Our other sponsors are also key to all of this: HomeSure Lending, Peak Wealth Management, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, the University of Michigan Alumni Association, Michigan Law Grad,Human Element, and Lantana Hummus

--------------------------------------------

1. Offense

Starts at 1:00

What happens when their trash program does their trash stuff, and Michigan isn’t going to apologize anymore. Michigan gains about 400 yards, 78 of which on the fly to DPJ that’s been coming for years. Recurrence of Shea’s nervousness, one bad read on an arc keeper, but the zone reads were camera fakeout-level. Were able to grind out the end of the game.

2. Defense

Starts at 28:22

MSU ran a trick play from the 4 yard line to score—when you’ve got to do that… Ton of opportunities for MSU to get a PI, missed long a bit but for the most part refs fairly allowed the guy who won the route to run it. Lewerke did and didn’t practice this week. Uche had two sacks, leads the team with five despite little in the way of snaps. A Rutger is when a team gives more points than they have yards (so for example MSU had a rushing Rutger).

3. Special Teams, Thoughts and Feels

Starts at 44:03

Bad punting decisions. You cannot punt on 4th and 5 from the 38—that was an 18-yard net punt. If you’re in go-for-it field position you should be setting up a makeable 4th down. Wish M had a play to get a second score from spending all 2nd Q in MSU’s zone. The worst punter in the conference made the play of the game. Guy was punting ground balls with eyes that you can’t field in a rainstorm. Dantonio’s sad timeouts: there’s no dignity being a Spartan.

Marcus Ray: shut up. Old players bashing the team aren’t helping the team; they’re trying to get notoriety at its expense.

4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac

Starts at 1:01:05

How’s Michigan going to defend Rondale Moore? Is Ohio State’s defense just bad? Haskins made Woody roll in his grave 73 times, 20 more passes than the previous Ohio State game record. 4th down is a different world sans Barrett. Wisconsin and Illinois played a weird snow game. Iowa gave Maryland no big plays, i.e. nothing. We nearly lost a conference room to the worst Rutgers team since they joined the conference, which is saying something. IU outgained Penn State but lost in a #Chaosteam-like performance and kickoff returns. If the playoff committee is considering 1-win teams, Nebraska is first. Frost will be fine but what about Fleck?

2. Wisconsin Recap

starts at 27:27

This may be the high watermark of the season for UFR grading of the blocking. Wisconsin’s defensive ends really were atrocious after all. Still, there were very few missed blitz pickups, very few missed blocks. Lots of new stuff too. Patterson was a little jumpy, perhaps hasn’t yet adjusted to new and improved pass protection. Still having zone issues. Aubrey Solomon was able to stop the bleeding at the defensive line in the second half. Wisconsin’s OLine is still elite. Slants were mostly shut down.

3. MSU Defense

starts at 52:40

The defensive backs are not 2013 caliber but the front seven is still very good. The #1 team against the run, though they’ve definitely had a soft strength of schedule. This will be the toughest test yet for Cesar Ruiz against MSU DT Raequan Williams. Secondary is soft but they don’t give up a lot of big plays.

4. MSU Offense

starts at 1:08:03

MSU does not have a good run offense. LJ Scott is hurt and the other guys are guys. Spartans had success on the ground early in the 2016 game with their early script and expect that again. Will have some tricks ready this time. They will try to get it to Felton Davis often, though it didn’t work much last year. Brian Lewerke is having problems protecting the football. Michigan State has a lot of injuries. Seth starts to rant about ghosts.

--------------------------------------------

1. Offense

Starts at 1:00

Denard blessed the Michigan quarterbacks so they ran for 138 yards and 2 TDs. Shea's keepers. Bless Ed Warinner. Bless your heart, Shea's vision in this game. Where was Bench Mason? A few too many "We did A, next comes B." Other goofy stuff: Joe Milton package, McCaffrey as a WR. Second half they finally learned to throw. JBB didn't allow any pressure, was grinding.

2. Defense

Starts at 24:20

Got pushed around by Wisconsin's big boys, managed to hang in there, though that was in part thanks to SIX(!!) carries by Jonathan Taylor. What does Chase Winovich have to do to generate a holding call? Yes this is the chart thing everyone's been talking about. Critical INT thanks to trap coverage. Hornibrook had one completion for over two quarters. Watson almost got the same INT as last week. M had a hard time with those jet sweeps. Got Randy Rivers moving around, which nerfs his accuracy.

3. What Are You Doing Turtle?

Starts at 43:22

So many bad decisions. Everything after the give-up punt is sad scoring. In the first half he forgot running the clock down was a thing. First play of the sad touchdown drive Hornibrook was almost injured. Wisconsin couldn't keep themselves off of Cheeseman. Shutting down Wisconsin was well worth 30 yards of penalties. Somebody held up a #ThankYouAce sign.

4. Around the Big Ten with Jamie Mac

Starts at 57:55

NOTE: This segment had a recording issue (Brian and David were almost completely muted) so the quality isn't up to our usual standards. I spent many hours on Sunday repairing it because we have an exciting Big Ten West race going on. March of the B1G West QBs: David Blough hammers Illinois. Thorson's arm almost went off throwing to Flynn Nagel. Frost has aged 10 years per loss. Indiana can't stop tight ends and played Iowa. Rutgers forgot to field a kickoff. imageMcSorley's average weekend. Ohio State's screen-a-thon.

1. After Upon Further Review: Maryland

starts at 1:00

The Terps did a good job keeping Bush out of the game. Mone handled doubles really well. Donovan Jeter didn’t look too good but Kwity Paye just keeps getting better. Maryland was Shea’s best game of the season and he keeps getting better. Another good game for the offensive line.

2. Gimmicky Top Five: Greatest Cats

starts at 22:57

We welcome Michigan grad and Lantana CEO Matt Gase for a top five favorite felines. It gets weird. There is a secret hummus to be sampled.

3. Wisconsin Offense

starts at 47:04

Badgers rotate 8 guys on the offensive line. Their best offensive lineman is not even a starter. Jonathan Taylor is a patient runner and is very good on his own, even without the monstrous offensive line. Hornibrook has a weak arm but very accurate command. Slants could be a problem and safeties are going to be tested. This is Carlo Kemp’s final exam.

4. A Short History of Huge Wisconsin Games

starts at 1:02:40

Wisconsin’s defense is pretty beat up. They can’t pass rush at all and have suffered a lot of injuries on the defensive line. Outside linebackers aren’t making plays and the secondary is also beat up. ILB’s are the strength of the defense. Wisconsin loves punting. Especially in enemy territory. Have a good kicker, but one important miss.
