Via Sam Webb (freebie), Orchard Lake St. Mary's linebacker Joshua Ross has committed to Michigan. Ross has been a regular visitor at his brother's practices for years, however the Ross family maintained that Josh would be dutiful to the recruiting process.

But when that familiarity combined with Don Brown arriving with a defense that looks for smaller, quicker linebackers who get upfield in a hurry, the likely college destination turned to obvious.

A 4-star recruit with plenty of scouting already, Joshua Ross appears to have more physical upside than James, but perhaps not the crazy instincts that made his brother an instant starter. At 6'2/225 his skillset projects well to the blitzy/edgy/tight-end cover-y Sam role in Brown's defense.

A more informative update will come later today or tomorrow, and by the time he arrives on campus in a year I'm sure we'll have this one thoroughly scouted.

I'm a big believer in "starting at home" in recruiting. Lock down every player you want in Michigan then go compete in the rest of the country. Still, I have to think it's better for the program to pull a 4* safety out of Alabama than a 3* from Michigan. Also, it's not like we're overstocked at safety.

If the staff sees them as close, they have two big reasons to prefer the local player. 1) He's less likely to decommit if he gets an offer from Bama or Auburn. 2) You don't want players from your pipeline schools going to local rivals. His other main interests are listed as OSU, ND and MSU and they have all offered.

Should they take more than one safety? Sure, I would think so. Presumably they have other recruits they like their chances with too.

The guy has the  size and passes the eye test, but live and on film he doesn't really "pop".  Hopfeully it's a matter of coaching and development rather than a lack of intangibles or drive.

Are we confident that small, quick linebackers will be sufficient to stop the kind of option offense that the buckeyes used last year? "Small" isn't an adjective I want near anyone that will be tasked with taking down someone like Ezekiel elliott.

Small, quick linebackers are essential to contain OSU's spread. We were killed by the option pitch because our linebackers weren't in positiont to make plays and when they were, they missed tackles. Getting faster is really important for that. To stop someone like Elliot, we need a suffocating D-line that stuffs all holes. I think we would have been better off at doing that if we weren't as injured by the time of the OSU (not saying we would have stopped him completely, but it would have been better).

I like the term, but I'm not sure Ross fits that role. If he's 6'2" 225 18 months before arriving as a true frosh, I see him more as a pounding ILB than a small yet quick SAM. Josh Ross is at least an inch (but probably 2) taller than his brother so I imagine he'll weigh more than him initially too. It's doubtful Ross starts out less than 235, but maybe more.

It will be interesting to see Uche and where he ends up. He was listed as a DE by most recruiting sites. The difference between him and Ross is that Uche is a year ahead of him and still about 5 pounds lighter and Uche can fucking fly. I don't know much about Josh Ross's speed, but Uche would be fast for a DB. He will be a star. And yeah, Josh is lighter than James now, but he's 5 years younger and already about 10 pounds bigger than James was when he committed.
