Defensive Coordinator Rumors
FWIW:
TomDienhart Brady Hoke may consider hiring ex-Florida DC Teryl Austin and/or Baltimore Ravens DC Greg Mattison, according to Detroit Free Press.
If Hoke continues coaching his defensive linemen, and he reportedly would be bringing linebackers coach Mark Smith with him, that would leave the defensive secondary and the defensive coordinator spot.
He could look at coaches from his past to help fill the defensive coordinator role, including former U-M assistant Teryl Austin, who worked with Hoke at U-M in 1999-2002.
Another coach with ties to Hoke is Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Greg Mattison.

Sweet Dude! We need one quick! Its T-shirt Time!
January 17th, 2011 at 9:30 PM ^
I would be happy bringing in Greg Mattison. I would think he should be able to recruit, given his NFL ties. I just hope a hire is made, soon.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:35 PM ^
definitely need a hire by friday
January 17th, 2011 at 9:52 PM ^
He's 61 years old, so yeah, hire away...
January 17th, 2011 at 9:58 PM ^
I imagine you have a better solution, so I will bite...who is it?
January 17th, 2011 at 10:11 PM ^
I would rather hire someone younger. GM could do a fine job, but Bedford is 52 and Austin is 45. We have not had stability at the position, so a 61 yo just does not seem like a good idea.
January 17th, 2011 at 10:14 PM ^
I would be happy with Bedford, but I would think that would have been a done deal by now. I could be way off on my assumptions, but none the less its what I am thinking.
January 18th, 2011 at 9:45 AM ^
when Urban decided to come back to Florida he offered a big paycheck to Bedford in an attempt to make him DC. He stuck with Strong for a heck of a lot less.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:14 PM ^
How about we worry about getting someone good, over worrying about age. Last time I checked the Raven's have a good defense.
January 18th, 2011 at 9:47 AM ^
Not sure how much credit of that goes to Mattison.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:23 PM ^
Dick Lebeau is 74 and has the Steelers rockin.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:27 PM ^
Exactly.
Brian's obsession with age has spilled over into many of these posters.
January 17th, 2011 at 11:39 PM ^
The Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) only forbids age discrimination against people who are age 40 or older. It does not protect workers under the age of 40, although some states do have laws that protect younger workers from age discrimination.
I must be getting old.

If Michigan was an NFL team, I would agree with you, but the college game is different.
DC has to have enough energy to travel all across the country at the drop of the hat and have to relate to 17 year old kids. If you are a DC in NFL, you can put the hours in the tape room which is much easier for 60+ old guys.
You want younger guys with lots of energy as your coordinator.

"You want younger guys with lots of energy as your coordinator."
Actually I just want someone good, who can maybe develop talent. Being a good recruit is good, but it has been said that the actual position coaches do most of the recruiting.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:07 AM ^
I highly disagree. There are occasions that it is easier for a much older coach with vast amounts of experience to relate to the younger player than it is for a coach who is just 15 or 20 years older. Making this broad generalization is stupid and dangerous. Hire the guy for DC who (1) wants to be here, (2) can make good in-game and pre-game decisions and adjustments and (3) can recruit his tail off for Michigan. Things like age shouldnt come into play for a coordinator job, its not like he his being hired to be DC and coach-in-waiting.

Apparently you don't keep up with society 60 is the new 50!
January 18th, 2011 at 6:25 PM ^
61 is the new 51!

Saying that Michigan, notoriously cheap with assistant coach salaries, can get off easy by hiring a guy who is on the verge of collecting Social Security AND getting Medicaid coverage?
I like your style!
January 17th, 2011 at 10:57 PM ^
I think you mean Medicare. He's approaching 65 and with his salary, Medicaid is probably not in the cards.
January 17th, 2011 at 10:28 PM ^
A good coordinator if successful will be hired away anyway. Coordinators are constantly being turned over, either because they suck and get fired or are good and get promoted somewhere else. Age does not concern me here.

I hoke it's not Mattison. I believe he was replaced by Jim Hermann after Mattison left for ND, and I think it felt like an upgrade.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:37 PM ^
Why would someone leave a great DC job for a good NFL team to coach us, doesnt seem like a good move. Unless he has very strong michigan ties
January 17th, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
You must have missed the memo.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:00 AM ^
...strong Hoke ties. Hoke replaced Mattison as D Line Coach when Mattison moved up to DC. Hoke and Mattison coached together at Western Michigan in the mid 1980's.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
the D improved while under mattison until he left in 1996; peaked in 1997 under hermann; than started its gradual decent to oblivion til hermann was fired.
he's probably getting up there in age but i would take him in a heartbeat to help turn this D around.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:31 PM ^
the Ravens have a pretty good defense. Is this true?
January 17th, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
Nah it's a fantasy.
ONLY ITS REAL!
January 17th, 2011 at 9:35 PM ^
Rumblings about Mattison's job security.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:41 PM ^
Which is strange, considering that the Ravens O was the side of the ball that looked miserable against the Steelers. I was pretty impressed by their D, they were just on the field entirely too long.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:46 PM ^
the antics of the last three years...it will be hard for me to forget Gerg rubbing that fuzzy brown thing on people. I feel weird even typing that.
January 17th, 2011 at 10:40 PM ^
They gave up 31?! How is that impressive D? Besides the first 20 min I wasnt that impressed.
January 18th, 2011 at 12:21 AM ^
Try reading the box score. Baltimore gave up only 5.1 yards per attempt. That is a pretty good number. Problem is, Flacco was held to 2.6 ypa. You don't win many games when you have a -2.5 ypa differential.
The actual point total in the game had little to do with the quality of the offenses. That happens.
January 18th, 2011 at 10:01 AM ^
but is 5.1 pp really that good? That means on average you are picking up a first down every two plays....seems a little high IMHE.
January 18th, 2011 at 2:59 PM ^
Two fumbles and an interception inside your own 25 yard line will do that to a defense. Honestly they are lucky it wasn't worse, those three turnovers translated to 17 points right there.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:31 PM ^
Thanks, Shoe.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
Two double posts in a row, sorry.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:32 PM ^
Just Snyder name-dropping people previously associated with Hoke. No suggestion anywhere that they are names he's actually considering.
Looks like little more than space filler.
January 18th, 2011 at 2:08 AM ^
Take it FWIW, but scout has been bringing up these guy's non stop since the hire.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:33 PM ^
would Greg Mattison really give up a DC job with one of the top defenses in the NFL to be the DC at Michigan? Hard to believe, but I'd take it if it's true... though it makes me nervous to have a DC named GREG.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:34 PM ^
was thinking the same thing. why would anyone downgrade to the same position like that? Sounds like wishful thinking
January 17th, 2011 at 9:36 PM ^
The 'buzz' to which I was referring was the Scout premium board. No additional explanation was given.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:36 PM ^
Some people in Baltimore are not crazy about Mattison. Better job security might be at Michigan.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:41 PM ^
Even still, I won't believe it til I see it. Fans always find something to complain about, even when things are going fine. The defense looked pretty good in their playoff game.
January 17th, 2011 at 9:43 PM ^
i suppose... but then again i don't want someone coming to michigan cause they're worried about losing their other job.... THIS IS MICHIGAN FOR GODS SAKES!
January 18th, 2011 at 7:26 AM ^
Those two are not getting any younger, that D will never be the same once they hang it up.
