OT: Wannstedt Resigns
December 7th, 2010 at 3:53 PM ^
Well this should be interesting. He has a pretty decent recruiting class to poach from.....
December 7th, 2010 at 4:56 PM ^
Guess we'll see him back in the announcer's booth or pre-game show studio.
Guess its better than Pam Ward, Matt Millen or even that slobbering mess Lou Holtz.
See ya next fall Wannstedt.

I wonder if this helps us in recruiting and in our search for a new DC if RR stays. I wouldn't mind having the 'stache or Shannon coaches our D! Plus, it sure seems like he could recruit, and we've been having a harder time in Penn. since he took over.
December 7th, 2010 at 6:21 PM ^
The only thing I missed in my post was profitgoblue teasing us. Off to fire practice for me!
December 7th, 2010 at 3:54 PM ^
Long live the 'Stache.
December 7th, 2010 at 3:55 PM ^
Had one good season anyway.
December 7th, 2010 at 3:56 PM ^
It is a wonderfull stache
December 7th, 2010 at 3:54 PM ^
Wonder if they were going to fire him or something? Can we poach some of his recruits?

A news story by Paul Zeise, the Pitt football beat reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, has Pitt athletic director Steve Pederson meeting with head football coach Dave Wannstedt later this week to discuss the future of the program.

is the AD who crapped all over himself at Nebraska...correct?
December 7th, 2010 at 6:19 PM ^
The Pitt AD is indeed the very same guy who singlehandedly changed the nickname from the Nebraska Cornhuskers to the Nebraska Pantcrappers.
That's the great thing about America—you can fail upward.
December 7th, 2010 at 6:20 PM ^
That's the guy. Not only the Husker AD, but he's a Husker alum as well and still srewed it up in Lincoln. If I'm not mistaken, he was AD at Pitt before Nebraska and then was welcomed back with open arms at Pitt.

fbrumormill?
Sounds reliable.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:00 PM ^
I'll make an edit -- it's on other pages now. And actually, that is a pretty reliable source. About an hour ago they tweeted that there were rumors floating around that his job may be in jeopardy.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:03 PM ^
Just giving you a hard time, :).

TWSS!

No worries for the man. You know, come to think of it, he has a certain look to him that might make him a perfect fit for a career in . . . uh . . . maybe as a d-coordinator for another team? He has a great defensive mind.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:15 PM ^
Interesting idea:
1) Big East Head Coach of an underachieving team
2) NFL pedigree
3) Defensive minded
4) Is known for his hair (but on his lip)
Maybe we should avoid this cycle....
December 7th, 2010 at 4:28 PM ^
But it hurts so good.

Moustache for Michigan?
December 7th, 2010 at 3:58 PM ^
we can snake oil?
December 7th, 2010 at 3:58 PM ^
Current Pitt commits who have Michigan offers are RB/WR Bill Belton, CB Terrell Chestnut, DE Desimon Green, CB Kyshoen Jarrett, and LB Ben Kline.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:02 PM ^
IIRC, weren't Green and Jarrett high on us at one point?
December 7th, 2010 at 4:03 PM ^
Yes, as was Ben Kline.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:07 PM ^
Dave Wannstedt out at Pitt. DB Kyshoen Jarrett is a current Pitt commit. May be some opportunity there for Michigan, also Penn State.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:09 PM ^
Me gusta mucho
December 7th, 2010 at 4:11 PM ^
...this too
DB Kyshoen Jarrett is sending out a text message to coaches, including Michigan coaches to get back in touch with them.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:12 PM ^
god, if those Penn State Geriatrics get him...I am going to....get mad.
December 8th, 2010 at 2:21 AM ^
yes please.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:08 PM ^
was the last straw. He's never really had consistently top shelf teams anywhere he's been HC, has he?
December 7th, 2010 at 4:11 PM ^
No, definitely not. But Pitt doesn't have a recent history of being extremely good (they did go to a BCS game a few years back, which was fun having both alma maters in BCS games). Also, from what I understand, Wannstedt is a very good (?) recruiter and a very good teacher of the game. The biggest complaint I consistently heard was that he's not a good "gameday" coach. And I guess that's what it comes down to after getting 4 years to prove himself (see what I did there?).
December 7th, 2010 at 4:13 PM ^
Are backdoor references to timelines covered in the act?
December 7th, 2010 at 4:16 PM ^
Yes, but I really just threw it in there for fun.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:19 PM ^
I know I just couldn't resist pointing it out.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:23 PM ^
As a former Pitt student, this is basically spot on. He assembles a lot of NFL talent that go on to do good things, but can't put together a dominant team even in the Big East. Individually, Pitt has more talent than any other Big East team. Problem is, you take that talent against a team with a great scheme (Brian Kelly's UC) and get beat every time.
Also, the biggest complaint with the students was that he could never get it done when it mattered. He lost two in a row in the Backyard Brawl and two in a row to Cincinnati to lose BCS berths in 08-09, and then the Big East implodes this year and he couldn't deliver then either.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:50 PM ^
His win against WVU in 2007 was huge. That was a great game to witness in person!
December 7th, 2010 at 4:53 PM ^
Not the win..the fact that you were there. I was sitting in high school in Illinois at the time. Epic though, you're right.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:03 PM ^
referring to Michigan specifically when talking about recruits like Steve Breaston and Marlin Jackson leaving the state when he was hired. Hard not to think he may have hurt us in recruiting with that emphasis. I look forward to any poaching and snake oiling that may take place. Re-open the Pennsylvania pipeline!
December 7th, 2010 at 5:21 PM ^
Me too but I think poaching may be tough until this coaching business settles into something definite.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:07 PM ^
This was JoePa's strategy all along -- let the stache do all the work and then grab his class as soon as he is fired.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:09 PM ^
I never thought he was a particularly great coach anywhere, whether it was in the pros or in college. I think he'd make a great D coordinator in the NFL (not in college though), but I don't think he gets any head coaching offers anytime soon (except for a lesser BCS program or non-BCS FBS school, which I doubt he'd take).
December 7th, 2010 at 4:10 PM ^
December 7th, 2010 at 4:34 PM ^
to bring him in for the Big Chill. Text back!
December 7th, 2010 at 4:13 PM ^
Wannstedt just seems to be one of those guys that just doesn't seem to have "it" as a head coach. His teams are rarely bad but never very good either. Given that he's now struck out after long tenures with the Bears, the Dolphins and now Pitt, I wonder if he ever gets another shot or if he's just going to go back to being an DC somewhere.
December 7th, 2010 at 4:16 PM ^
measureables? Is he good at man to man or zone? Any additional information on Jarrett?
