Tackling By The Dreads
I hope this doesn't happen but I could totally see a moment where ND is frustrated and tackles Dilithium by the dreads. I know in the NFL this is legal (it happened to Polamalu and Ricky Williams when he still had the dreadlocks). Does anyone know if it different in college football?

don't be scurred, it rarely happens

Tons of people have dreads, and if people were getting their scalps ripped off constantly they would cut their dreads.

Please tell me the lack of emotion was a schtick.....as P. Tear Griffin once said..."C'Mon.......C'Mon!!!" we have Dilithium!

muthafucka you know i'm pumped, shamone. it wasn't a shtick, though, that's just how i sound

Woudln't recommend it with the Predator under the helmet.

If they can manage to get a hold on one of his dreads, they deserve to bring him down.
But don't count on that happening anytime soon.

It's part of a player's body, and not the facemask, so it's legal.

So you can tackle by it, but you can also get penalties. (Happend when a guy tackled Polamalu but then wrenched his head by the dreads on the ground. Clean tackle, then a 15 yard personal foul)
But, you can't tackle what you can't catch!

If your only chance to tackle a guy with 4.3 speed and agility is to grab at his dreads, shoulder high, then you actually have no chance to tackle him.

Well, it appears UConn developed the "take his untied shoes" approach to stopping DRob, maybe ND will meet this challenge with the "pull his hair like a girl" approach.
September 9th, 2010 at 4:55 PM ^
I was under the impression Uconn was trying to take his shoes off in the pile to slow down the hurry up.

get a 1-on-1 with a safety, who he will juke out of his jock, the safety will make a great play just to attempt a shoestring tackle on Denard. The force will not be enough to stop Denard, but it will rip off his untied shoe. He will proceed to run the rest of the way to the endzone wearing 1 shoe.
This is definitely happening.

Shouldn't the defense be flagged for delay of game if they pull off an opponent's shoe?

I don't remember the game (I'm thinking it may have been an LSU slot-ninja type RB/WR), but a couple years ago a dreaded speedster got loose down the sideline and was caught by a DB who had the perfect angle and instead of diving for the legs he reached out one-handed and pulled him on his tailbone by his dreads. Full speed forward to flailing back by the hair. The defender came up with a couple strands in his hand
No penanlty and the announcers showed it 2-3 times and talked about how it was legal.

This I think is the play you were talking about.

It is. Looks like my memory was pretty spot on (but for substituting a purple-clad dimunitive LSU slot-type with a bright red Rutgers TB).

Any sane person would not try and grab a full speed Denard by his locks....They'd probably get a 3rd degree rope (dread) burn.

I don't really understand why the NFL allows the grabbing of hair to tackle. They don't allow facemasks or horse-collars because of the potential for injury (specifically to the head and neck). Grabbing someone's hair and jerking them down, causing intense neck pain, seems nearly equivalent to grabbing and turning someone's facemask. If the NFL takes the position of "cut your hair and you won't have that problem," then it seems awfully discriminatory towards cultures in which long hair is more common.
Not an answer to your question, but something that has always troubled me.

It's a part of their body, long hair in the back interferes with grabbing the jersey from behind. Anyone is fair game, so cut your hair accordingly.

and facemasks are standard. The NCAA isn't telling athletes that they have to cut their hair, but if you choose not to, getting dragged down by your dreads is a risk you are taking.
Now, If it happens a couple times with malicious intent, I believe they can get a personal foul.

I wanted to tackle by the hair Donata Pico or whatever that fat Sparty's name was from a few years back who ran back the fumble for a td.

domata peko, fyi.
not to be confused with ahiru no pekkle:

I fail to see the difference.

did anyone else picture JT Floyd's dreads shooting out from his head and wrapping up and tackling Michael Floyd?
MS paint opportunity, kids =D

Michigan made a dreadlock tackle in one of the early '08 games (I want to say Miami). Looked like the guy got clotheslined--pretty brutal.
September 9th, 2010 at 4:34 PM ^
I've seen it on several occasions.
...I've also lost quite a few points pointing out that long hair isn't a great idea in activites where large men are trying to grapple with you (probably will here as well) .
But I guess "cool" trumps all.

You have an enjoyable avatar.

It should be a 15 yard penalty, but I'm not exactly sure. It doesn't happen often and with the speed of Denard it's likely to not happen at all. Denard was actually asked this question and he said "They'd have to catch me first."
September 9th, 2010 at 5:41 PM ^
You cant tackle a blurred image of where the dreads were 0.3 seconds earlier. Just like goalies in penalty kicks, there just wont be time to react.
