OT: Map of college stadiums that sell alcohol

Submitted by crg on

FYI. I came across this earlier today and found it interesting. Personally, I was very pleased to see that not a single Michigan school was on this map. I know others may disagree, but I like that the school doesn't enable the fans to get themselves into an inebriated frenzy while at a school function (a family oriented tradition for most). I live in Ohio at the moment and often see billboards for domestic beer (Coors?) with the OSU logo. True mark of an institute of higher education.

I never drank myself into a drunken stupor before or during a Michigan game while attending as a student.  I wanted to soak in every snap.  I wanted to revel every high stepping band routine with clarity.  I wanted to remember the experience.   I also didn't want to run to the restroom three times.    So alcohol sales at games does not register on my priority list.

Post-game?  That's a different story.

I was at a US Men’s soccer friendly held in Nissan Stadium in Nashville. Concessions were short staffed for this special event so lines were very long. While I was in line, the workers started announcing that there was no more alcohol as they ran out. One man became furious and started yelling to the point that police had to wrestle him to the ground, cuff him, and carry him off.

Honestly, why does anyone care much about alcohol. If someone cannot make it through a sporting event without a drink, there might be a problem with addiction. As one poster on this thread pointed out, why would you want to leave the event to pee so often?

Unless you plan to use it on that soapbox. Plenty of Michigan fans have been getting themselves into an "inebreiated frenzy" for years on end, in and out of the stadium, and I proudly count myself among them  So have college football fans (and, gasp, students) across the country. Alcohol isn't new.

By the way, Maryland's alcohol vending policy (the only one I've tested) sells one beer per person per kiosk visit; if you think that'll lead to mass-steria, you probably thought pool was a threat to our nation's youth.

How would you feel about high school stadiums selling alcohol? The main issue is about what the school is promoting and their priorities. Unlike OSU, UM is not trying to monetize every single aspect of the experience and essentially become an NFL-lite gameday (though I'm sure Dave Brandon would have have gotten there, given enough time). There is still the tailgate tradition for those that want the more "adult" experience, or just hitting the bars before/after - used to do all of it myself back in the day.

wishy washy with this subject.  On one hand I think its pretty bad form for a major college or university to associate itself with any kind of alcoholic brand.  Its just a terrible overall message.

OTOH, I think most schools should be able to offer alcoholic drinks as long as they go by what seem to be pretty standard rules now of not over serving to individuals.  On top of that most places make beers so damn expensive only an idiot would actually over consume at $9 a pop inside a stadium.  Drink heavy before or after, during for such a price is just silly and those people will overconsume regardless of if its available in the stadium.  There are plenty of people who love a nice cold beer during a game and could handle it fine.

But, I also remember the bad ol'days at UM when you could literally haul a cooler in and tuck it under your seat (ie right in the middle of the aisle) and walking around the stadium after a game you couldn't take two steps without kicking a beer can or whiskey bottle.  But that was people making their own poor choices not a university selling them the alcohol.

Its a revenue stream, and I guess I'm ok with it but I don't want to see the block M on a billboard next to a  bud light bottle or something worse.

My comment is less about booze in stadiums. (There already is a ton of bootleg booze in the stadium, espically in the student section) I hate the US’s alcohol laws. They are very Purtanical compared to the rest of the world (not counting certain dry nations who follow religious laws) in ways that encourage binge drinking in the shadows. The 21 year old restriction is laughable and bad. If your wondering, I am well over 21 at this point. Legalize responsible drinking everywhere. Open container and MIPs and the like are nothing crimes that hurt no one, cost money, give people a record, and often dissporportionalty hurt the less well off. Leave it up to Parents until 16/17. Fully legal after. (Edit: This pushes politics, but as you might guess, I think the two are related and think we should not just have booze sales in the big house, I think we should be able to bring our own. If you act poorly, eject and/or arrest.)

I still keep my college tradition of drinking several Keystone Lights before I walk into the stadium 10 years after graduation. I don’t need anymore once I get into the stadium. I’m always sobered up by halftime. The hungover drive home I barely notice anymore

I think it would be pointless. People get hammered before/after games for cheaper anyways. As said, universities selling alcohol just doesn't seem to send the right message.

The thing I have to add though and that Brian has mentioned before: It's not necessarily just a safety issue, but a convenience issue. Drinking at a sporting event is a process, you have to get beer, go to the bathroom, get more, etc.

As a season ticket holder, I would rather not let you pass my seat a million times so you can make beer and bathroom trips while I'm trying to watch and cheer on our team!

Actually, what I am saying is quite the opposite of the down in front philosophy.

I'm saying we should quit focusing on putting drinks IN our mouths, and instead focus on being loud with the noises we make coming OUT of them.

I don't want stupid distruptions and distractions from people passing my seat, just as much as I don't want stupid distruptions and distractions from people saying "down in front". As I said, I want to watch the game and cheer for our team!

How is what I said "down in front"??

I'm still sending out apology letters to those in my section.

Those early September games when the sun was unrelenting often had me feeling by the end, well like this:

Drunken assholes are going to get drunk and be assholes regardless of whether they drink their alcohol before or during the game. I was at the OSU game in 2012 (pre-alcohol) and 2016 (post-alcohol) and honestly it was the same. Beers are like $10 for 12 oz so it's not particularly easy to get drunk on stadium beers anyway.

Not to mention you used to be able to bring freakin' kegs into Michigan Stadium back in the glory days. Somehow the place didn't burn down. I don't really care whether Michigan chooses to ever sell alcohol in the stadium, but the idea that it'll cause the stadium to devolve into drunken revelry is frankly puritanistic. It's just beer, not magic maniac juice. I would hope our fans can manage to drink beer like normal adults. It annoys me to no end when people act like the university would make itself look bad by selling beer. As if Michigan can't trust their fans to handle their liquor responsibly.

I'll see your unpopular opinion and will raise you a very unpopular one.  I too am glad that Michigan Stadium doesn't sell alcohol.

I further wish that alcohol didn't exist at all. I don't understand the attraction... it turns otherwise enjoyable people into reduced versions of themselves, and often brings out the worst traits in folks, and that's all before crossing into more serious problems like health concerns, alcoholism, and threatening people's safety.

When people w/o a problem are making the decisions, they aren't going to be the same as those with a problem. I know a lot of those people, even though I'm not one - I tend to finish what I started in that regard - and that is definitely not a bad thing, could even be a good thing; enhance their fun somewhat. But those of us who tend to get carried away(not a problem as i've gotten older) could and probably do present problems for others, some of which probably ruins their entire experience. So, no, I don't know the answer but I would tend to err on the safe side.

I can relate to this comment. Either you are holier than anyone else or you have had a bad experience with alcohol. I come from a family tree littered with alcoholism for many generations so I have had these feelings a time or two. However, knowing what I know now, alcohol is not the problem. If people are hurting enough, they will find something to self medicate. It’s inevitable.

I wish they would sell it. As others have said, it won’t make much of a difference. People that want to get drunk will get drunk regardless. Very few people if any will go in sober and decide to get hammered just because beer is sold there. Hell, it could reduce the amount of drunks as it is way easier to sneak in hard liquor bottles than beers. I’d probably stick with beer if it was available in the stadium as opposed to airplane bottles of the hard stuff.

I went to the BC/FSU game in Boston this year and and the only way I could sit through it was by drinking $8 Bud Heavy's. That said, I'm not sure if I'd like Michigan to sell during games. Plus you can always just pack a flask*

*Not that I ever would. Ever. Certainly not.

Beer available at osu makes experience better when watching Wolverines come to town. The biggest problem with beer being sold in ohio stadium is they only let you buy two at a time. Will be toasting that beer to a sweet UM victory this november.

I don't see the problem here. The problem that I really care about is a huge number of essays. I think the teacher forget that we have only 24 hours and we are not able to write it so fast. Sometimes, we need to do research work and it takes time. I such stations, only https://www.myassignmentwriting.com.au/ saves me nerves
