Mo and Charles in NBA draft?

Submitted by massblue on

Given his recent performance, Charles has moved up the draft boards.  He could move into 1st round with great plays during FF.  At one point he was #9 NBA prospect.  I hope he plays well and returns for one more year.

Mo seems to be locked into the 2nd round and has said that loves the college life.

I can only imagine how good this team could be next year with both coming back.

I think if they win the national championship both are gone. If Frank Kaminsky was a lottery pick, Mo is at least a late first rounder. Matthews has an NBA body and versatile defensive skill set. Sure, his long range shooting could stand to be more consistent, but that will come with time. Now, if we lose the title game, I expect one of them to come back, whichever one has the less impressive Final Four.

I think you underestimate how good Kaminsky was. I mean the dude won the Wooden award, had a better shot than Wagner, was a great passer, and has an inch or two on Wagner. Granted his potential as a NBA stud was curbed a bit, given he was athletically limited and a Senior.

It’s not a knock on Wagner to say Mo is not the best player in all of college, which Kaminsky was.

Kaminsky won every POY award... the Wooden Award, Naismith Award,  Associated Press POY,  NABC POY,  Oscar Robertson Trophy, Sporting News POY....etc. He also lead his team to a Big10 Title, and a Championship game. But yeah... your high school sports Strawman probably makes more sense.

his improvement since the beginning of the season has been stunning.  Credit to the coaching staff.  In January this question would have been laughable now it might be a possibility.

I like Teske's development, but it's hard to see next season's team being great without a stretch 5 assuming Wagner goes. We'd easily be sweet 16 caliber, but it would be amazing if Wagner came back for one more.

The team does completely fine with Wagner not in the game. What makes you think the team won’t be great without him next year? Wagner hasn’t done much in 3 out of 4 tournament games and Teske has really come into his own....we will be just fine next year

Even with wagner not hitting shots, the threat is still there and bigs have to guard the perimeter, leading to open space in the paint. This is why Matthews and Z are able to slash to the basket while the 7' rim protector is nowhere to be found.

Impresses me with that turnaround jumper he's seemed to perfect in March. I don't know shit about basketball compared to most, but I like what I see and I hope his future is in the NBA.

Neither will leave unless they win it all. They are both beholden to Beillen for their progress, are team oriented players, and will know they will have excellent chances to improve their draft stock by perfecting their respective talents under Beillen. This is not like MSU where players have doubts about how much they will improve under Izzo.

i always though Mo would be gone this year even before this run...

Now, do i think he should leave? Like DJ before him, i think he can still develop at Michigan. But also like DJ, if he has a first round grade, i can't blame him for leaving, regardless of what happens next weekend.

Matthews is intersting; during the season, i thought no chance... but he has grown leaps and bonds... i still feels he is too inconsistent right now and isn't a guy that the NBA looks at as "can't miss"...6-6 wings are pretty common.

i think he stays another year and develops into a 1st rounder next season.

i would love both to come back though.. this team would be one of the top teams in the nation next year if they did

IF they both do return, we will definitely be a preseason top 5 team.  it'll be interesting to see how the scholarship situation plays out though.  Transfers are generally inevitable, and I can think of three players who may prefer to go elsewhere to get more PT.

pro potential of these guys is. The NBA drafts potential. The way Beilein talked about Charles after the game last night, I am assuming he's coming back for at least another season. Moe's future seems more uncertain in terms of his return.

I think Moe could obviously play overseas and in German pro leagues. But he's not likely to climb out of the second round of the NBA draft. We'll see what they decide, but I think it's premature to worry about whether these guys come back. Somebody is going to have to leave. Duncan, MAAR and Simmons are gone after next week.

I still believe that if Wilson were on this team it would have been Top 5 most of the season. This team has grown into its success by finding itself as one of the nation's best defensive teams, and using that to carry the rest of its game. This really is a team that can play any way it has to because it believes in itself and its ability to defend any opponent. When you have that kind of confidence, it just radiates in your on-court demeanor. There is now a gritty, unmistakable tough-mindedness about this team when it takes the court.

and then... If they see they might need another year to develop like Mo did last year, they should come back. I think it would benefit both players if they came back. Mo still needs some work, and so does matthews. If they came back for the objective to improve their weak areas, their draft grade could eventually increase to that mid-first round to late-first round pick. Mo still needs work inside playing D, and Matthews could really improve on his consistancy. I do think matthews is coming back regardless but still, you never know. Next years team could really benefit from Mo's return in particular. With the big recruting class that we got, as well as this years freshmen, they could really pose a threat to be a top-ten team. Winning is a great boost to draft stock in older players.

Has anyone seen a more streaky shooter? I swear his first 3 shots will determine how the game is going to go. I think Purdue BTT title game was one of the only games I ever remember him struggling early, but picking it up 2nd half. If he hits a couple though, seems like he’s locked in. I think they need “good Mo” in F4, especially if they make the title game against a heavyweight.

is ready..Mo is too inconsistent and Charles has had a great tournament so far but that doesnt equate to making it in the NBA...BOTH should comeback

Matthews has NBA-level athleticism, but his overall game isn't there yet despite improved play in March. His jumper remains inconsistent, and the FT shooting is an issue. He's a guy who definitely needs another season to prove that he can be a consistent shooter from the field and line and increase his playmaking ability, even though he projects as a plus defender at the next level.

Wagner, on the other hand, pretty much is who he is at this point. He's had a polished offensive game, and he's improved his rebounding. He's never going to be a plus defender as a pro, and he has a pretty slow release by NBA standards. His ceiling is probably mid-second round, and that is unlikely to change with another year in college.

Yeah, just so many aspects to work on. If he had MAAR's overall offensive game, he'd easily be a first round pick because he has elite athleticism. He'd still be smart to declare to get the pre-draft evaluation to learn what he needs to work on for next season.

Before yesterday I didn’t think Matthews was going anywhere. After the Elite 8 game I am starting to think he at least goes to the draft camp. Hell, Kam Chatman declared a few days ago and Matthews has a much better NBA future than Kam(No offense Kam, will always remember that shot vs. the Hoosiers).

However, I think Matthews may test the waters to see what scouts are saying about him, then ultimately return. Then Mo, I'm really not sure what will happen. I don't think he's ready and I don't think he'll be drafted in the first round, however I think he may go anyway

Any chance Matthews loses minutes to either someone on our bench or an incoming freshman? If so then he may leave bc his stock will never be higher.

better than 30.7% (20 pct in the tourney). That number sticks out like a sore thumb and is a killer for a 6 foot 6 shooting forward. Combine that with a 56.6% FT pct and there's no way teams are going to overlook that and take him early enough to warrant leaving early.

I liked it better when we pretended that athletes came here for an education. I don't know what makes players succeed in the NBA, only that it's as different from college success as the NFL is from college football. I suspect the reason has more to do with building up your body to take the pounding of 82 games a year than we'd like to think. That's a big part of defense - sacrificing your body.

to be a NBA guard.  If he can get that part down, he could be a 1st rounder in next year's draft.

As for Mo, he needs much more consistancy to even think about the 1st round.  You never know which Mo will show up.

I'm beginning to wonder if Mo's highly emotional nature gives him problems for getting a restful sleep before big games.  Just a theory, but it might explan part of his inconsistancy.

My take without reading other comments is that Mathews is basically Glen Robinson and far to inconsistent. Overall i dont think he has the IQ for the game to ever make it in the league even as a practice squad guy. Wagner will get picked in the 17-25 area. His measurables, offensive skill set, work ethic / passion for the game are enough to make him a first rounder. MAAR is a early second rounder.

I.Q. You are not qualified to give any opinion about basketball. Stay planted on your couch. If Matthews was the West Region MOP and he doesn’t have a basketball IQ for basketball then your IQ for opinionated writing is negative zero! That’s negative zero!

I agree with you that Charles is another version of GRIII, he needs to come back and work on free throw shooting and his outside shooting. Mo needs to come back to and improve his skill set in the box and Defense down low. A big mistake if they both leave.

bryemye

March 25th, 2018 at 6:41 PM ^

But to be honest, I doubt either is a first-rounder. Matthews needs to work on his shooting (really needs to) and Wagner just can't defend in the NBA.

Matthews cannot ball handle, can’t shoot outside, and has a slow first step. He should not leave, he should enjoy playing a lot on a college team and living the college lifestyle. The NBA G League would not be a step up.
