I remember it seemed like Musberger was saying "ol 98" every other play in that 2013 ND game. Hopefully a repeat in the opening game of this upcoming season.

I’m going to really enjoy watching him play one last time for UofM this year. He possesses such a rare blend of humility, raw talent, work ethic, and leadership that he makes every around him better. The scouts got it right on him, and the NFL is going to have its hands full when he goes in the top 5 of the draft next year. He deserves all the success that’s coming to him... let’s hope that includes a playoff season and finally beating OSU.

I think I am in the minority when I say that I Liked when Gardner wore 98. I like when players wore the retired numbers. Hoke just went about it all wrong, only giving it to seniors or guys who “earned” it. That is stupid. Devin Bush wore 11 in High School, I’m sure he would have chosen to 11 at Michigan had it been available. You need to treat them like any old number not this thing that can only be attained after a year or two. It’s been said on here before but it sort of ruins a players legacy when they switch numbers. I remember Jordan Kovacs as wearing 32 not 11. If it’s done right I sure hope they bring those numbers back.

My cynical take: he's prepping for the NFL where he could not wear #3. If you look at his social media, he's very much tried to build a presence or even a brand. He's got his little hands over the eyes gesture, he has certain hashtags. Part of me thinks he switched in his last year so that he could build 98 - a number he can wear and might demand in the NFL - into his identity or brand now.

He might just have been offered it though. Coach might think he's so good and primed to have such a legendary year that he offered him the most legendary number in our program's history.

would give recognition to our all time greats but I'm not in favor of rretiring any numbers. I love watching to see if promising players can live up to the best of those who have gone before wearing a given number. Many won't, some will approach and some may even match it, but seeing that number our there on Saturdays is the best tribute IMO.

The football team, I believe, does an excellent job of explaining the importance of this number and the high honor to receive it. Devin Gardner could have reverted to #12 after his college career completed but he still wears #98 for the Nojima Sagamihara Rise of the X-League. I wouldn't be surprised if Rashan Gary carries on the tradition.

I am happy to see that there are less 3s on the field, but this somewhat makes me want to vomit. Is Dave Brandon back? I just don’t get it. No one will ever even compare to the performance of Tom Harmon, so why reintroduce the number? While I thought Devin Gardner wearing it at UTL II was cool, it wasn’t so great afterwards. Why put the legacy of 98 at risk to some degree? Maybe the answer is do it for a single game. I kind of like that idea better.
