Maybe he's going to play basketball, too. Like Julius Peppers.
I remember it seemed like Musberger was saying "ol 98" every other play in that 2013 ND game. Hopefully a repeat in the opening game of this upcoming season.
I've always thought it was silly to retire numbers in a sport in which guys only get four years to compete. Let him wear it.
That's a big, billboard-sized 98 rigth there in your face, OL. Enjoy the view before it steamrolls you into last week...
I liked #3 on Gary, but if he wants to wear #98 and dominate, I am alright with that too.
Does this mean he is switching to QB?
Yes, it why Jim is going all RPO next season.

Or maybe TE.
better than the QB wearing it
I think I am in the minority when I say that I Liked when Gardner wore 98. I like when players wore the retired numbers. Hoke just went about it all wrong, only giving it to seniors or guys who “earned” it. That is stupid. Devin Bush wore 11 in High School, I’m sure he would have chosen to 11 at Michigan had it been available. You need to treat them like any old number not this thing that can only be attained after a year or two. It’s been said on here before but it sort of ruins a players legacy when they switch numbers. I remember Jordan Kovacs as wearing 32 not 11. If it’s done right I sure hope they bring those numbers back.

My cynical take: he's prepping for the NFL where he could not wear #3. If you look at his social media, he's very much tried to build a presence or even a brand. He's got his little hands over the eyes gesture, he has certain hashtags. Part of me thinks he switched in his last year so that he could build 98 - a number he can wear and might demand in the NFL - into his identity or brand now.
He might just have been offered it though. Coach might think he's so good and primed to have such a legendary year that he offered him the most legendary number in our program's history.

Most legendary? Maybe. But 2 & 21 would like to have a conversation with you.

would give recognition to our all time greats but I'm not in favor of rretiring any numbers. I love watching to see if promising players can live up to the best of those who have gone before wearing a given number. Many won't, some will approach and some may even match it, but seeing that number our there on Saturdays is the best tribute IMO.

That Rashan will be trying out for QB then right?

Does wearing 98 help you draw a holding call?

The football team, I believe, does an excellent job of explaining the importance of this number and the high honor to receive it. Devin Gardner could have reverted to #12 after his college career completed but he still wears #98 for the Nojima Sagamihara Rise of the X-League. I wouldn't be surprised if Rashan Gary carries on the tradition.

I liked #3, but as long as he's destroying QB's, he can wear whatever number he wants.

Half our team was wearing No. 3 last year. I think it's good if Rashan wants to switch. (Because yes, I kept getting Rashan and Quinn Nordin mixed up.)
