Seems to be a perfect fit for this team as OC and WR coach.

It just means theres a thorough process of interviewing multiple options to get the best coach for the job. Just because there's names like Brian Wright, McElwain, or Cameron on board does not mean they are the top option for the job. All the reports so far have been rumors or assumptions, but there's nothing coming straight from schembechler hall yet.
Also (I can't believe I'm using this as an example) as Tennessee has shown, just because a coaching search takes a while doesn't mean it can't be successful

We can lure the OC away from the Cleveland Browns if McElwain or Cam turn UM down. No doubt that will be spun into a program changing hire. Remember when Texas "settled" for Charlie Strong( HC not 10th assistan I know) and how that turned out. Just saying it looks like UM might be settling on what they can find and not what they really want. No matter the hire as long as Pep and Drevno are still on board don't get your hopes up to high. The more things change...the more they stay the same.

I just love the "Jets offense was ok last year with shit talent so he is good" line of thinking. The Jets success or failure provides us very little evidence of his ability to be effective on this staff for this team.
February 12th, 2018 at 2:04 PM ^
in his 2 years as OC at USC he took them from #44 to #14 in S&P+

"Bates left at the end of the season as Lane Kiffin became HC of USC and assumed playcalling duties. Morton remained on and retained the title of OC, but Kennedy Polamalu (then Pola) was also given the same title. Effectively Polamalu was the RGC and Morton was PGC for the second of Morton's two years in that role."

Also, it's difficult to give Morton a big amount of credit given that Kiffin was the HC and de facto OC.

Look at Drevno at Stanford and at UM. The past does not mean it can be duplicated at other places. I guess you can apply that to a certain HC at UM now.

Guy has the following resume:
- Played WR in college and was scrappy enough to hang around as a professional for 5-6 years
- Has coached in college, has West Coast connections, and coached at a program (USC) that runs something similar to Michigan is trying to do
- Has NFL experience as a coach
- Has coached w/ Harbaugh previously
Seems like a no brainer, and way better hire than a weirdo like McElwain
February 12th, 2018 at 1:50 PM ^
Why is McElwain a "weirdo"? I mean, do you believe the shark thing? Seriously?
(You do know it wasn't actually him, right?)
February 12th, 2018 at 2:01 PM ^
Maybe lying about threats against his family, and that weird gif of him during an interview?
February 12th, 2018 at 2:29 PM ^
I made up my mind a long time ago that it was him who was humping the shark in this photo and nothing you say or do is ever going to make me think any different!
February 12th, 2018 at 3:58 PM ^
I thought I read somewhere that the shark guy was legitimiately the Jimmy John's CEO.

It's an equally silly story.
The guy in the photo isn't someone well known.

Hire Scott Fuchs already, get it over with.
No one Fuchs with his offensive lines!
February 12th, 2018 at 1:22 PM ^
There's only room for one former NFL OC on the staff.

Psst...what cupboard are you refering too? He's already added some young blood to the coaching staff. Harbaugh isn't beholded to his former coaches...BUT anyone who is building a program is going to take a look back and consider some of the talent they've already worked with. Harbaugh didnt get to the Superbowl all on his own.
February 12th, 2018 at 1:36 PM ^
He does have some background at USC. I'm not sure what he was like as a recruiter, but he definitely would be a great add as far as coaching the position. I'm be happy with this hire.

else picturing the wrong John Morton??? This was the first thing that came to mind...
February 12th, 2018 at 2:44 PM ^
That is exactly who I had in mind..but in a Lion's Uniform.
Then I looked up THIS John Morton and found that he was born in Auburn Hills, MI...so of course he's coming back home to join the staff. That tidbit plus his time coaching in S. Cal could open some doors with recruits in two key recruiting areas.

I was thinking the Johnny Morton version the Lions employed...

same guy, he went on to play for KC and SF

Are we hiring an OC or a WR coach. Seems like most of the folks they've been reported as talking to could be OC. Of course, if that was the case, then why did Enos leave?

that Harbaugh will hire the best candidate for our team, to get the improvement we need this year. That along with a more focused and intense coach, we should be pretty excited to get the season going, especially spring ball. One thing I am enjoying is there is not one story about Harbaugh on the College Football Page at ESPN which I think is a really good sign. Onward and Upward. Go Blue!!!

Seems over-qualified, but that's the trend I suppose.
He played at GRCC. Did he go to high school in west Michigan?

I really do think that this is the best overall hire that coach harbaugh could make. I really like the fact that Morton was a former WR and WR coach himself. That makes him have even more value for this team. He would essentially fill the two of the three most important voids on our offense at WR coach and OC. Another fact about him that I like is that he is from Michigan. That could/would really improve in-state recruiting, and he will know about the rivalries and the importance of them. This should be coach harbaughs #1 choice and I hope he makes it.
February 13th, 2018 at 1:44 AM ^
Harbaugh said he wanted to get more stability at the coaching level, well this would be another great but temporary position as JM is looking and will continue to look upward and leave in 1-2 yet max.
Still shaking my head on the Mama Bush being let go, as a parent w kids who play High School and College (D1) sports having her is a major plus for a parent and especially the moms.
Harbaugh better wake up or he will be the reason that we are not progressing and instead regressing, with the hires and lack there of FIRING!
