OT:Nasser sentenced to 60 years.

Submitted by Hugh on

When does this hit MSU. I think this is worse than the Penn State scandal as Nasser was doing his sexual malpractice as an official of both the MSU athletic department and as an official of the U.S. Gymanastics committee. It has been reported that when MSU women complained to the athletic department about his behavior they were told to shut up or they would have no future in gymnastics. When does the shoe drop at MSU?

If this was Michigan it would have been the only thing the FREEP would have talked about for the past year.

1.  this is just the first case he's dealing with.  it's more like the first shot off the tee.  pretty sure there's more to come and it will total into the triple digits.

2.  while it is fun to joke about what's going to happen to him in prison, in reality he could very well be revered.  i mean, who do you think he's serving time with, really tough boy scouts?  and for that matter, he's the top of the food chain in terms of his sick productivity.

3.  he's a doctor and is likely going to be sought out by other inmates, kind of like if a lawyer goes to the joint.  there are skills there that make them valuable to an inmate population.

No, sex offenders are the lowest of the low. Even in prison. It wont go easy for him. He will be raped and beaten and maybe even killed. They call them chomos in prison. I have a HS friend who did time in Federal Prison on gun charges. After he got out of the halfway house I gave him a job so he could try and get his shit together. Hes told me some stories about the chomos that would make a hard man sick.

who apparently works in a prison.  i would defer to his hands-on experience, but in michigan our prisons are filled with child molesters.  this guy was grossly abusing young ladies, or at least gross to us.  to an inmate population though many could think he was 'copping a feel' with some cute girls.  while that may turn our collective stomachs, the joint is not a normal place.

i think there is a fair chance he could get shanked in the joint, sure.  but it's not a given.

Yeah, my understanding is that child molesters are generally targeted for rape in prison. Given the scope of his crimes, I wouldn't be suprised if he goes straight to solitary for his own protection. Personally, I have no sympathy for that sick bastard, and if he does find himself cornered in the shower by bad men with bad intentions on a regular basis, hey. Payback is a motherfucker.

Every prison story I have ever heard starts with a new inmate having to provide his papers to prove he isn’t in for sex crimes. Dudes like Larry Nassar and Subway Jared don’t have good experiences in prison.

This is street rag fare. My brother is in the federal justice system as a CO. The reality of what you’re describing is made for movie stuff. They often sequester these inmates. They will move him a little bit away from Michigan or keep him in a minimum security location. My brother worked in minimum to Max. Max is a vile place. Nasser will never see the inside of a Max. That’s held for lifers and high threat types.

been to many, sent many there, talk to convicts, talk (and friends with) guards, yada yada.  i only vaguely know the facts of nassar's case and don't care to learn more, but my understanding is that his victims were pubescent and older.  in the joint, that's not really considered 'pedophilia' like it is in the rest of the world.  and its hetero, which is also less likely to offend that population.

i'm not saying he won't get shanked or otherwise abused, he may well have a target on his back.  i'm just saying it's not a guaranteed, done-deal.

The shoe is going to be on the other foot very, very soon. Especially if he goes into general population.

He was the predator. And now he'll be the prey. Whatever he gets on the inside, however many times he's bent over and shown who's bitch he is, it won't be enough. Nothing will ever undo what he's done.

Wow. This is like, the most MSU thing ever. Time to go argue with MSU fans on twitter about this for the rest of the day. But I have NO TIME to spend on the blog. Ever since I LEFT, it became terrible.

I'm for a swift, like 5 minutes after the gavel drops, death penalty. Prisoners can find moments of joy in life and this man does not deserve one single moment of happiness or joy ever again.

repeated over and over, don't cast a real great light on the posters. To me the issue needs to be punishing the people who covered for Nasser through hundreds of cases over decades, instituting measures to prevent it happening in future. I don't need this pitiful asshole getting more of the same from more pitiful assholes to be convinced his life is gonna suck from now on.

OTOH I agree with being angry about this, and frustrated that the story hasn't received the prominence it needs. As the father of 13-year-old girl I'm inclined to wonder whether we're just more inclined to yawn at something like this than men and little boys? I mean, this is pedophelia and rape; what am I missing about how this is different or less egregious?

I have a teenage daughter too so I've given this case more thought than I would have ever wanted to.  The only thing I can come up with is that the specific acts that Nasser engaged in are considered to be a "legitimate" treatment, at least amongst chiropractors (and maybe DO's).

So it's disgusting, immoral, and illegal, but I think maybe people think it's somehow less traumatic because it happened in the context of a medical visit.  I mean, some of the victims didn't realize they were abused until years later.  It's a little more ambiguous than raping a child in the shower.

in his pool? And 10s of thousands of violent porn vids? I don't really want to dig around find out. . .

Maybe that's part of the problem; a certain weariness with the ugly. I know that while I am a lifelong political junky and follower of the news I have steadily withdrawn lately.

One gymnast was drugged during a planeflight and woke up undressed with Nassar "treating" her by digital penetration while rubbing his penis on her.

That's not treatment.

That's also the most graphic thing I've typed here, know that I did not type it lightly.

given the subject matter, but I pretty much stopped following the details of this case several months ago.  All I was aware of was what they found on his computer (enough to put him away forever), and the things that happened in his office.

Obviously there's more that I wasn't aware of.

Given that, I don't know why this story isn't getting more attention.  Especially with all the current focus on sexual assault and harassment.

LSJ has been the only news outlet to envoke an outcry as to why the Gymnastics coach is the only person at MSU to be fired for this. I can't believe more aren't in cuffs for their culpability in this.

As an educator she is required to report this sort of thing or potentially face charges. I think the most logical reason she was allowed to receive her pension and get no reprecussions from the school after her resignation is because she has dirt on high ups, like she told regents/AD/President and they had it hushed up, speculative but I'll allow it.

You Only Live Twice

Should be looked at very carefully too.

There's something highly disturbing about anyone who knew what Nassar was doing and instead of rearranging his facial features, or at least reporting him, actually helped him continue to molest little girls.  (I can't call them women, the youngest victims were only 9 years old!)

He's 54-years old. It is my understanding that the 60 year sentence is only for federal charges, and the sentence is to be tacked on to state charges (to which he's already plead guilty). The state sentencing will be forthcoming in a month, or so. I hope he never gets paroled for "good behavior."

I understand wanting preds to do hard time, but I would never want more rapists in the world. If someone rapes him, it affects both him and his rapist. I'd rather him go to solitary and not give anyone the opportunity.

You Only Live Twice

however in this particular fact pattern, I fail to see how Nassar could get any worse.  Even if he did... the prison sentence alone should render that moot.  He's not going to be able to go out in free society and rape little girls ever again.

Too bad he doesn't have 60 years left to serve.

Also Simon needs to step down/be removed unless she is willing to open her emails and disclose when she was first made aware of complaints. And if she does more likely than not its a bombshell as keeping that many complaints under wraps needed to be made at a high level.
