OT: last day of Mike & Mike
November 17th, 2017 at 9:52 AM ^
I think most of us here don't like them because they are boring. That's about it.
November 17th, 2017 at 9:37 AM ^
But just became stale very quickly.
LeBatard is still the best sports talk show on air, and it is not even close IMO.
November 17th, 2017 at 11:08 AM ^
And it's not even over!

Agree with you 100%
November 17th, 2017 at 9:40 AM ^
Good riddance. I agree with those above that I'd be happy to never hear the name Golic again, but I'm sure his son will keep getting ahead because of his name. I remember one of them was a low 3-star recruit and was invited to the Army All-American game, and now this one, if it's the same or another son, is on radio only because of his name. He's not necessarily good at it, just got his foot in the door because of his dad.
However, I do hope ESPN keeps Russillo as long as possible, regardless of how many benders he has.
November 17th, 2017 at 9:41 AM ^
In this morning slot, I listen to a combination of Mike and Mike, Howard Stern and the college football channel with Taylor Zarzour & Greg McElroy. Golic has always been "meh" to me, but I was always a fan of Greenie. I think he is a pro and I always appreciate his support of Michigan and the B1G.
November 17th, 2017 at 9:41 AM ^
So much hate. There as so many more annoying and cringeworthy sports talk people out there. These guys were perfect for the casual sports fan.

WHAT? SOMEONE ON THE INTERNET ENJOYS SOMETHING I DON'T? I MUST GET TO THE THREAD AND COMMENT ON HOW MUCH I DON'T CARE ABOUT THIS."
November 17th, 2017 at 11:01 AM ^
18 years on the air in that time slot is something to be celebrated and congratulated. While some like them and some do not, their success and run on the air puts them at the top of the sports talk radio world.
November 17th, 2017 at 11:20 AM ^
True...
How can anyone say Mike and Mike is worse than any of the shit that comes out of Stephen A Smith's mouth? Or anything Jemele Hill says?
November 17th, 2017 at 9:48 AM ^
Golic is an idiot, an individual who should not be speaking in public. He should have just parlayed his career NFL earnings into a couple of suburban Cleveland auto dealerships and gone out of the public eye.
Greenberg is an annoying, moralizing twit who tries very hard to boil down every issue into an everyman consensus, and it just doesn't work for me. He thinks he is smarter than he is, and I imagine whatever fat new contract he has signed will just amplify this trait. Fuck him
November 17th, 2017 at 9:58 AM ^
Greenberg has always reminded me of Bob Costas in that way. Smarmy, arrogant, thinks he's the smartest guy in the room, when all he really is is a talking head filling dead air with hot air.
Golic has always struck me as a semi-moron from whom you would be lucky to get one insightful thought in a three--hour period. He could have played Mongo in Blazing Saddles, but he probably couldn't have remembered his lines. (And that would also have put Alex Karras out of a job and we wouldn't want that.)
Hey, but who am I to judge? ;)
November 17th, 2017 at 10:04 AM ^
Not enough to fill 4 hours, but when there were major stories, esp. off the field, it was usually a good listen to hear the issue from multiple perspectives. Greeny carried that show, though. Golic's Working Class/Everyman act could wear a bit thin at times, but the chemistry worked.
I was never quite a regular listener because mornings are all Morning Edition on NPR, and they can't compete with that. But the 1-hour condensed podcast was a good listen for late-night dog walks. And it always made me want to set up a temporary office space with Regus.

I might call in on the Subway Fresh Take hotline to say this, but Mike and Mike were always like vanilla ice cream - you'd only consume it if there was absolutely nothing else available. I'd sometimes switch over when Sam and Ira went to commercial (or were talking about a sport I didn't have any interest in).

from a food science point of view, vanilla is actually one of the most complex flavors in existence, containing over 250 different flavor profiles. I dont know how it came to be that basic/bland/boring things began to be described as "vanilla" but it is a misnomer. I happen to love real, high quality vanilla ice cream
November 17th, 2017 at 11:47 AM ^
I think vanilla means bland because it is common, in two senses. One, everything has a vanilla flavor option. Two, vanilla is in everything even if the flavor of that thing is not vanilla. For example, chocolate chip cookies are not called chocolate chip vanilla cookies because vanilla is seen as a starting point and thus bland or plain.
FWIW, I love vanilla as a flavor, particularly in beer or bourbon.

I always liked Mike and Mike.
November 17th, 2017 at 10:36 AM ^
Mike and Mike were like McDonalds. They were everywhere, and when you were in the car and needed to listen (eat) they were good enough to fill the void. Consistant and predictable if not exceptional. Much like ESPN itself.
Not sure what all the hate is, but it was a long time staple of sports radio, so I think it's noteworthy in that regard. I can't recall any other show besides Rome that has survived so long in basically the same format.
November 17th, 2017 at 10:44 AM ^
Completely agree, no idea why they always got some hate here. They give pretty vanilla takes on everything. They were just that generic backround sports talk when you're in a car or on TV while you're getting ready for work. They were not antaginizing nor did you need to seek out their opinions.

Again - not sure about the hate. If you don't like big macs, don't eat them, but don't preach to me if I like them.

Far tooooooooomany talking heads
In ALL areas.

Since I dont have enough points to start an OP, figured I'd post this here so someone else can mention it at a later time. Its off-topic, but oh well..
Darboh and Chesson doing us proud. A wonderful example of UM football and immigration to the U.S.:

The formula for Mike & Mike:
Greeny: "The sky is blue."
Golic: "Whaaaaaat?! You're insane! The Sky is obviously fucia. I don't even understand how you could come to the conclusion that the sky is blue."

They're terrible. 90% of that awful show is NFL talk. Good riddance. It's been long overdue.
November 17th, 2017 at 3:13 PM ^
And 90% of that was about how bad the Jets are. Guess what.......I don't care!

Instead of "Golic and Wingo" could they just move the LeBatard show to that time slot?
My biggest problem with their show was that on a 25 minute drive to work it felt like I was lucky to get 10 minutes of the actual show; way too many commercials.
November 17th, 2017 at 4:22 PM ^
I doubt many Lebatard fans are up at 6am
