Debate proposition: Dantonio is the best coach in the B!G.
I'm sure many negs are due this OP, but I just watched the MSU game and when I think of this:
-3-9
-lost best their WR and several contributors due to scandal
-are along with M, the youngest team in the nation
-have objectively, factually, worse talent than any of the league elite, including us
-are playing walk ons at key positions
-had a terrible recruiting year yet are playing freshmen
-beat us at home and just beat PSU, another team with far superior talent to them...
I can't come to any other conclusion than the title of this post. I am all Harbaugh, and I think our future still is brighter than most in the league. I wouldn't want any other coach for Michigan. But damn IMO this is hard to refute. But I'm wide open to counter arguments. Have any?

and learning the system, it's considered an improvement, so I wouldn't throw the fact that he took perhas his best talent and went 3-9 with it as a good thing.

And Meyer just had his ass handed to him by Ferentz at Iowa. So by your logic, Meyer is not a good coach either.

Dantonio lost more games last year than Urbz has in almost 6 years at OSU combined.

Why is going 3-9 an argument in his favor? Especially in year 10 of his tenure. What legendary coaches have done that?
As an aside, I have noticed posters on this board (not this OP) suggest that our win over MSU last year "counts less" because they were 3-9 last year and that this isn't a mark against Dantonio's coaching success. Dantonio "owns" Harbaugh b/c his only loss was with a 3-9 team and does more with less talent--never mind that Dantonio had a fair bit of talent on that 3-9 squad.
By the way, I do think Dantanio is one of the best coaches in Big Ten, but I find it strange that so many posters turn every negative against Dantonio into a reason for further accentuating every positive. If Harbaugh had four seasons of at least six losses in his first decade at Michigan, we would be irate.
November 4th, 2017 at 7:51 PM ^
Having 6-loss seasons at Michigan State vs. 6-loss seasons at Michigan is apples to oranges. Michigan's resources, facilities, and recruiting pull far outweigh Michigan State.
So yes, Michigan fans would definitely be irate.

Bullshit, money doesnt matter that much, MSU has great facilities and B1G money. MSU has been the better football program the past decade, they should be the ones held to the higher standard but you cant be objective about it. If money was all that matters what happened to us and Texas the last decade? This is not the 70's, plenty of teams have money to compete. Have you seen the MSU facilities? They are about just as good as ours.

... go 3-9 in year ten of coaching at MSU? We'll never know, but I doubt it. Stanford, San Diego, and BGSU didn't have resource advantages.
The question was whether MD was the best coach in the Big Ten. I don't think his lack of resources closes the gap between him and Meyer. (I agree with your point about his record not flying at UM because of our advantages; I was responding to posters who altogether ignore his failings.) Also, as others have mentioned, it's not clear that Dantanio has the type of charisma to be a top-flight recruiter at a blue-blood program anyway, so I'm not convinced that we should assume that he would be Meyer's equal if put at OSU--in fact, I find it highly unlikely.

He can take a pile of toothpicks, tinfoil, scotch tape, and used kleenex and somehow make a functioning am/fm radio out of it.
We could have played that Penn State game 10 times and we'd have lost 10 times. I do not have the slightest idea how he does it, but he does it. That team should go 2-10 with the talent they have, and they're poised to make a run at the B1G. It's infuriating and amazing.

MSU wins its 8th game vs an AP Top 10 team over the last 5 seasons. Only Alabama has more such wins over that span

not considered when I just posted. Excellent coach then. Still not king imho.
November 4th, 2017 at 7:54 PM ^
and he has done well vs. Michigan, he did just come off a 3 and 9 season. Will say today showed he can get his team up for games besides Michigan. That and the 2015 upset at OSU are the only games besides Michigan I remembering him winning where he had less talent than the opposition. It would have been an incredible embarrasment to MSU had M managed to eake out a win this year losing 5 turnovers to none. Very good coach. Not king.

This is an insanely stupid post. Urban Meyer has three national titles and a .850 winning percentage. Dantonio has had 6 or more losses in 40% of his seasons at MSU. It's not even a contest.

Coaches are judged on results. Urban Meyer's are much, much better than Mark Dantonio's. End of analysis. You can take his dick out of your mouth now.

His winning percentage at MSU is a full ten percent higher than Saban's was at MSU, and he led them to top-6 national year end rankings for three consecutive years. I put Meyer and Saban as the top two current college coaches, but Dantonio is an elite coach and a perfect fit for that program (just like Harbaugh is a perfect fit for our program). The results he gets given the much more limited resources of MSU are incredible.
November 4th, 2017 at 8:03 PM ^
Elite coaches don't have .650 winning percentages. Period.

November 6th, 2017 at 1:09 PM ^
Agreed. But great coaches win meaningful championships.
Dantonio has them in control of their destiny for a 4th big ten championship in 8 years. And he beats UM 8-3. And if he wins on Saturday will have a winning record against OSU in the last 8 years.
I'd love to see UM start performing like Dantonio's MSU did beginning in year 4.
