(in addition to the meteor) Should we root for Penn State or Ohio State?

Submitted by SpikeFan2016 on

This thread is about who is in our best interest to win this weekend in Columbus between Ohio State and Penn State, given that Michigan is now essentially eliminated from the Big Ten East race.

I know that there are some rational reasons to choose either team, but I want to lay out the strategic case as to why I'm rooting for Penn State to defeat Ohio State and Michigan State to lock up the East early (I would ultimately root for Wisconsin to defeat Penn State in Indianapolis).

  1. I don't want Ohio State to be playing for any championships when they come to Ann Arbor. If Penn State defeats Ohio State, the Buckeyes will be eliminated from Playoff Contention. If Penn State then beats Michigan State one week later, the Buckeyes will essentially be eliminated from the East race (as we are now) and if PSU follows that up by defeating Rutgers and Nebraska (both at home in Happy Valley, 99.99999% chance) by the time OSU comes to Ann Arbor the division race will literally be over. This increases our chances for a home upset in my view, with the Buckeyes feeling letdown rather than knowing they're playing for a national/Big Ten championship. Will also decrease the amount of red in the stands.
  2. I want one of these two teams eliminated from the playoff, and the only way that happens this week is with a PSU win. Seeing BOTH Ohio State and Penn State in the playoff would be a heinous nightmare. The only thing worse than seeing one of these two in the playoff is both of them (and with Notre Dame still lurking around...oh god). It's not a certainty, but say PSU loses in Columbus but it's competitive or close/fluky. If OSU wins out to finish 12-1 as Big Ten Champions, they're in. If PSU is sitting at 11-1 with a narrow, road loss to a playoff team, riding a 4 game win streak, they'd have a decent shot at the playoff, especially with implosions already happening in the Big 12 and PAC 12 (and maybe the ACC?). Another scenario: say OSU loses to Wisconsin in Indy, but Wisconsin loses to one of Michigan/Iowa/Minnesota beforehand; PSU could easily get in à la OSU 2016 because the Badgers have no margin for error given their schedule, even if they are Big Ten champs.
  3. The more successful Penn State is in 2017, the more likely they suffer key departures in the offseason that bring them back down to earth in 2018 and beyond. Michigan wants Joe Moorhead (and potentially lower level assistants) to get poached to a job he cannot turn down. Michigan wants Barkely to leave early for the NFL, and possibly even McSorely. All of this becomes more likely if PSU doesn't head into the off season with hope that 2018 could be THE special year because 2017 fell just short. At this point, there are not equivalent key pieces on the Buckeye side in similar positions.
  4. Ohio State is a far bigger recruiting threat than Penn State.
  5. It's always more demoralizing for the home team to lose, and OSU Horseshoe losses are inherently delightful.

Ohio State all day. They already are what they are. The fanbase who think THEY were the ultimate victims of children getting raped in showers can roast in hell for all time. Also, Ohio State IS the best team and the best team needs to win out, because MSU fans now think they're a possible playoff team, and they just might be one Mark Dantonio Trademark Rabbit's Foot Event away from that actually materializing.

You have to root for Ohio State.

The Ohio State game is all that is left of our season that really means anything.  It's our last shot at redemption.

The last thing we want now is for that game to be irrelevant to the Big Ten and national picture.

At this point it woudln't even make sense to root for a meteor. We are two games behind Penn State, Michigan State, and Ohio State. Even in a best case scenario where Penn State, and Michigan State both lose two games. And Ohio State loses two including one from us We still probably wouldn't get into the BIG championship game.

The only thing we should be worrying about now is finishing with a decent winning record, and hopefully beating Ohio State.

Ohio State is a far bigger recruiting threat than Penn State.

Not true.  OSU has already maximized their threat.

They are not going to all of a sudden turn all those 5-star recruits into 6-stars.  The damage is already done.

Penn State is a far bigger threat.  They used to get those NJ and DC/MD/VA kids we have been getting lately.

A resurgent (and local) Penn State is a huge threat to close those pipelines.

Players like Peppers, Gary, Nordin, and a bunch of others might very well have signed with Penn State if those decisions were being made right now.

I despise them more than I do the cheaters in Columbus. Child rape trumps illegal benefits, cars, and a Children of the Corn-like zombie culture swallowing the entire Franklin County cultural life.

PSU beats OSU in a monsoon and routs MSU in a cold steady rain (driving Sharty fans to the exits at halftime).

PSU then chokes vs. an unbeaten Wisky team in the BIG Title game.

Bama beats an unbeaten Georgia in OT in SEC title.

Oklahoma wins out, beats an unbeaten TCU in BIG 12 title and counts on the OSU win as a playoff resume win.

Bama vs. Okie and Wisky vs. Georgia in playoff.

ND wins out but then loses playoff shot because of home loss to Georgia.

PSU doesn't get in and loses to Rich Rod in the Rose Bowl (I know this is really a stretch but they are 5-2).

OSU gets beaten by Clemson in a bowl game.

MSU has to play Auburn and gets pounded.

We play WSU in Holiday Bowl and pull it off.

I don't really care about other teams' staffing changes or recruiting prospects. There are four things holding us back: pass blocking turnstiles at both offensive tackle spots, lack of dynamic skill position players, lack of speed at linebacker other than Bush, inexperience at safety. I'm not sure it's reasonable to expect all of these issues to be fixed by next year but surely by 2019. 2) I can live with either result next week. The traditionalist in me prefers that OSU wins every game except ours, but you have to respect PSU's talent and Franklins ability to get that program where it is now after last year's result against us. I think an Alabama-PSU championship game would be quite compelling (though I still think Alabama wins by 7-10 points). 3) Objectively, I think OSU wins a close one next week but then loses to MSU and then crushes us (again). I'm not sure who wins PSU-MSU. 4) I'd like to see Peters get some significant PT in the next three weeks just to see what we have in him. 5) If we finish 8-4 and play a 9-3 USC team in the Holiday Bowl in San Diego, I'm perfectly fine with that. 6) As tempting as the Bears' job might be in a couple years, I really think Harbaugh is here to stay. 7) we'll win 2 of 3 next year between ND, MSU, and OSU (probably MSU and OSU) 8) we'll go undefeated in 2019, beating Georgia in the national championship game

Doesn't matter anymore.

I absolutely hate OSU, but it all is seeming kind of pathetic considering that we haven't been close to their level in 15 years.

This season is toast. Minimum 4 losses and I expect us to lose as badly, if not worse, to OSU than we lost yesterday. Need to figure out some path to improvement for next season and give recruits a reason to come to UM.

PUS wants Bama. They can have 'em. They'll then quickly re-learn how this feels.

It's not a hard question. Unless it would somehow benefit Michigan I would never root for Ohio State. I'd rather Penn State at least makes it to the B1G title game. (and the less OSU has at stake on November 25th, the better.)

And as others have said, OSU's probably going to win this week.

The stronger and more balanced the Big Ten East is perceived to be, the better for Michigan in the long run. PSU, and even MSU doing well and bringing more balance to the division doesn't hurt Michigan all that much (we recruit more nationally than they do), not as much as it is a threat to Ohio State.

I never used to hate PSU until Franklin came along.  Now I dislike them almost as much as OSU.  All that said, I think I'd rather see OSU beat PSU and then we beat OSU.  That scenario delivers the most pain to both PSU and OSU.

If it coms to be that, then so be it. That's a nice scenario, but a high degree of risk. Nothing worse than seeing OSU beat Michigan and in the playoff again.

What gives you any degree of confidence that Michigan can and will beat OSU? That is more likely to happen if PSU is able to beat them, at home. It will still be incredibly difficult.

Franklin will be gone, sooner or later.

I'm rooting for PSU because I can't stand the clowns over at elevenbitches.com ; PSU got hosed last year, they are playing better this year, most of their players will be gone next year, the OC will be gone in a couple years, and...

for Franklin to put this program where it is considering the collosal fuck-up that was Joe Pa is nothing short of amazing.  and...

Their players seem very humble, in particular Barkley.  He is well mannered and well spoken.

Fuck the Buckeyes. They should never have went to the playoffs last year but the B10 always favors them.

AND, seeing Buckeye fans at home after a loss is so beautiful.

The ideal scenario would be for OSU to come in here needing a win to play Wisconsin and denying them. As for Penn State - never thought it was fair to penalize the current players for the behavior of past coaches. This wasn't a recruiting thing. This was one seriously sick individual and a bunch of semi-seriously sick individuals who enabled him. They were purged at the time. On the other hand, they've only been in the Big Ten for 24 seasons, so they're still newbies and should be focused on Rutgers until they've paid their dues. The alternative being MSU, I don't know. In the end, I don't care because if Michigan isn't good enough to win, does it really matter who is good enough? I just want a win over OSU to end the season*. That would generate a lot of positive feeling heading into 2018. (* - I'd also like to see a return to the rule that only conference champions go to bowl games, so get off my lawn).

Penn st to go undefeated into big ten championship. Ohio st lose psu and us. Msu loses both and we are tied for 2nd in the east instead of 4th

Maybe I'm old and petty.  Maybe it's because I've lived in this cesspool for too long.  But I will never, ever, root for OSU to win.  In anything.

I seem to remember a quote along the lines of 'the burning rage of a thousand suns'.  This sums up my feelings about that place.

I often wonder how neighboring tribes and villages could harbor anger and hatred for so long at each other, but after observing the OSU/UM rivalry it is extremely easy to understand.
