Zoltan Mesko Drafted in 5th round (150th Overall)
Mesko selected #19 in the 5th round by the Jupiter Giants
or New England Patriots
Instant draft analysis from ESPN
The Patriots had an obvious need at punter and this is a decisive move to fill it. At this point in the draft, any player the team selected would be a fringe player for a roster spot, and that's why the team must have felt comfortable investing the choice in a specialist. While Mesko could face competition from a veteran free-agent signing after June 1, he must now be viewed as the clear-cut favorite to be punting for New England in the season opener against the Bengals based on this significant investment of draft pick/salary.

HELL YES! First punter drafted.

So he was drafted ahead of warren? ouch
April 24th, 2010 at 12:51 PM ^
or you could think that he's the first punter drafted. I'm choosing the latter.

He's a better player. Ha! Why did they get rid of the Warren thread? It is a legit question.
April 24th, 2010 at 12:55 PM ^
bc the topic has been discussed 900 times and comes to the same conclusion EVERY TIME.
I haven't visited the board for a while, it just pains me to know that Warren's FUTURE was hurt by this single decision.
it's just that some people seem to post on it out of glee/OHMANIKNEWHE'DBUST
guy wanted to go pro. he played admirably at UM and should have his hand shaken on the way out instead of people dancing on the grave proclaiming how big of a mistake he made. he may very well be drafted in the next 2 rounds, btw, as he's one of the highest scoring draft workouts remaining at the position.
and he is the one who will have to live with it. But, we are free to opine on that subject just like any other.

That scoreboard would have been screwed

He will go to Dallas. To play in a little game called the Super Bowl.

they have a bunch of endangered birds there. The death toll could be too much for several species to withstand.
No matter where in the galaxy Zoltan is, that scoreboard will never be safe!
feel bad for the children of New England who will never again experience the beautiful sight of a clear sky and a full moon - at least not after the Space Emperor blocks their view with a steady stream of practice kicks.

He was drafted as an ATH right? Right?

Offensive Tackle
April 24th, 2010 at 12:50 PM ^
Tom Brady must have really wanted Z....
April 24th, 2010 at 12:50 PM ^
Should be an immediate starter.
April 24th, 2010 at 12:51 PM ^
Rookie of the year
You forgot about Brandon Graham.
Isn't there an offensive and defensive one?

Kick it far
April 24th, 2010 at 12:52 PM ^
At Least I'll get to see him play because in CT, the Patriots are almost always on CBS.
April 24th, 2010 at 12:56 PM ^
CBS broadcasts AFC games
Patriots play in the AFC

CBS broadcasts Patriot games
It depends on where you are, though. Can't tell you the number of times I've wanted to watch a Patriots game (being a Pats fan in AA) only to get the Jets, Colts or Chiefs (or some other random team from the other side of the country). So yea...it's not just because it's CBS. Being in CT has a lot to do with it because the Pats are kinda their team too.
April 24th, 2010 at 12:52 PM ^
Mesko is never going to play.
April 24th, 2010 at 12:53 PM ^
...but he is the smartest coach in the league. He knows not to anger the Space Emperor.
April 24th, 2010 at 12:54 PM ^
... rip Tom that he was drafted way before he was! And Zoltan only needs a much hotter model GF (who hasn't been bedded by Leo Decapitated) to really make Tom feel jealous!
Way to go ZOLTAN!

Brady
Crable
Woods
Zoltan!
Except Crable needs to step it up...I like the kid and I want him to do well, but...he needs to step it up.
Blair White's still on the board while our punter is off to the Patriots. Sweet, sweet schadenfreude.
Does that make the Pats his minions?
he'll get his own Mastercard commercial with his own line backing him up. Bigger and better endorsements for the Space Emperor.
Grade the pick:

Can we get him to be the first Pat draft pick to garner over 100 A votes?
Mgovote!
SPACE EMPEROR RULEZ THE NFL
... we know Belichick's secret for mining draft gold (maize?) in the late rounds:
Eastern Europeans rejoice! Our Space Emperor continues his reign!
Perfect for Zoltan. Very happy for him.
when the Space Emperor arrives.
Congrats to Zoltan...
as I'll be torn between wanting drives to succeed with a Brady TD pass and drives to fail with Zoltan punting the ball out of the atmosphere.
punting for the Pats is great and all but it must pale in comparison to ruling all of space.
Nice. Good move by the Pats too. I can't believe it's the 6th round and Warren is still on the board. I bet he wouldn't have left if he knew he wouldn't get taken until at least the 6th.
The final frontier.
... why Belichick knows what he's doing:
this is a pretty cool thing for Zolton
He speaks four languages, but when told the punter's stall is next to Tom Brady's in the New England Patriots locker room, Zoltan Mesko was rendered speechless -- briefly. Icon SMI Zoltan Mesko, a Ray Guy Award finalist, was a bright spot for Michigan this season. "Oh, wow," Mesko said. Mesko, the Patriots' colorful new punter, is a native of Romania and the son of a former pro bowler (not a Pro Bowler) who emigrated to the U.S. when he was in middle school. Mesko became a huge Brady fan when he enrolled at Michigan, Brady's alma mater. "Well, that's the crazy part, transitioning from being ..." Mesko said, his voice trailing off moments after being drafted by the Patriots in the fifth round. "Tom Brady, from a fan's perspective, is my favorite player in the whole NFL, just because he has that Michigan tie, and he's done such a great job overcoming being drafted in the sixth round. "It's crazy how much he's done and how many people he's proved wrong. That's my philosophy in life. I get motivated more about the negative things that are said about me. I like to prove myself that way. I'd love to model myself after Tom Brady, so maybe getting to know him a little more will help that mind-set." Brady was selected in the sixth round, 199th overall in 2000. The Patriots drafted Mesko 49 slots earlier than they took Brady. A reporter asked Mesko if he would bring that up to Brady. "I was just thinking that, but I didn't want to mention it," Mesko said. "No, no. I won't. It's not about how you start. It's how you finish."
man, what a cool experience that will be for mesko. i am so happy for him. thanks for sharing that info, agold! it was a great draft choice for the patriots and i am excited to see zoltan take the field in the NFL!
