$5 Bits of Broken Chair
Wanted to share that one of the best college trophies is fighting to come back, and with a good cause. Might be the best college trophy next to the Jug due to it's awesomeness through ridiculousness. Fire up the MGoMoneyCannon to support these causes and a great trophy.

This guy reads a 5-tweet thread on Twitter and thinks he's finished War and Peace.

To be fair, even this is still more feasible than summarizing Proust's "A la recherche du temps perdu" in 15 seconds or less. Just ask the Bolton Choral Society.

Proposed new MGoRule: no snarky criticism of others' OPs permitted until you have completed 12 months of board service...

- Regional Proximity
- History
- One or both teams actually giving a shit
- Meaningful games between the teams

it is a great rivalry. I wonder what % of the UCF fan base (or hell even the players) know this even exists.

UCF? I thought it was USF... *Checks Google* ... Oh yeah, U Cee F.

Any donations made are split equally between two worthy charities - the University of Minnesota Children's Hospital and the Team Jack Foundation, a Nebraska-based foundation which supports pediatric brain cancer research.
But hey, feel free to let college rivalries take precedence over supporting institutions which work to heal sick kids.

As noted in the article, the $5 Bits of Broken Chair Trophy is one of the best, funniest developments in college football recently and is the product or fans' passion for their teams and universities in a fun-loving way that makes you remember this is just a game and that all people have problems, but college football can provide a momentary salve for that.
Adding a charity component is a great idea. Even if the NU/Minn administrations/coaches never get behind this, bravo to these Gopher and Cornhusker fans.

It's a shame that the universities haven't embraced this trophy with open arms. I hope that charites can ralley around it and raise tons of money in its name and make the suits look like assholes.

Or they've never heard of reddit and think it's some inappropriate social media thing.
The irony is that all the real good rivalry trophies came about organically (little brown jug, anyone?) and the ones the suits tried to foist upon us (Land Grant, Civil ConFLiCT) are garbage.

We need to get Lil Red in on this thing. Love the Faux Pelini angle, but Lil Red adds some legitimacy. Goldy should totally call him out on the Twitters...
Speaking of twitter battles, any chance there will be a rivalry trophy developed between the London Natural History Museum and the London Science Museum?

That trophy, with its backstory, is something I can get behind. Good work by Minnesota to actually build the thing, and it's well-executed. I'm not sure why a Michigan fan would fund it, but well-done Gopher-Huskers. Well-done!
It's the polar opposite of the wood shop class abomination that is the Land Grant Trophy.
(A better trophy for MSU-PSU might be a large gilded rap sheet or wooden handcuffs or horse blinders or virtually anything else that did not look like a poorly-conceived Lego building for a "rivalry". The Land Grant Trophy is almost as contrived as the "rivalry" itself - being one with no better backstory than "well, we're letting PSU into the B1G and they have no deep history with any B1G teams, so who needs a rival? MSU? I guess that makes sense - it would be nice for them to have some other team think of them as their primary rival!")

outside of my family that makes me happier than this. It's weird, random, and completely genuine. Screw all the powers that be for trying to ruin this, and bring back the chair!

Not quite getting this one. I love quirky CFB stuff as much as the next guy but...
The Jug is related to actual interaction betwen the two on-field football teams/coaches/etc. This is just - I don't know - random? A twitter interaction between one mascot (a stupid one at that) and some random internet dude with a fake twitter account and a good sense of humor. Just not feeling it.
I guess it's better than some of the crap "trophies" around, but that's a pretty low standard.
September 21st, 2017 at 9:25 AM ^
No one's trying to claim this is another Little Brown Jug. It's just something that grew organically, in a college football world that seems anything but organic these days. While Larry Culpepper is pimping out the Playoff Trophy and 30 mostly meaningless bowl games are scrambing to rep their corporate namesake, this thing sprung out of nowhere from the fans, caught on somehow with the actual players and was on the cusp of becoming a real rivalry trophy.

I also prefer my trophies to be focus group tested and built by consultants.
/s
I know that's not what you're saying, but still.
Also, I have read the the "story" of the Jug (the one where Michigan didn't trust Minnesota's water) was fabricated?
September 21st, 2017 at 10:01 AM ^
You doubt the suspicious water story?
I'll have you know I discreetly dip my junk in every beverage I offer my guests.
JUST TO HONOR THAT RIVALRY.
September 21st, 2017 at 10:38 AM ^
I'm now picturing a llama dipping its junk into a glass of water.
That's an image I did not expect to have in my head today.
September 21st, 2017 at 11:22 AM ^
And now, EastCoast, you know the secret of how kombucha is made. It's what makes it fizzy.
(Bonus fun fact - "Scoby" is the scientific term for a llama's scrotum.)

I love the chair, and the charities don't seem reprehensible, so I'm in.

I love College Football. stuff like this the Iowa waving to the kids thing and all the rest of them that come from the grassroots of the players and the fanbase is what make this the greatest of sports.

Sorry, the greatest trophy in College Football is the Situation Trophy
