[Upchurch]

Can you talk about what you get from Eddie McDoom on special teams and on offense?

“He’s been a contributor this year, last year. Fast, smart, fundamentally-sound football player.”

Purdue’s off to a good start. Can you talk about what you see out of them that has your attention?

“Yeah, the team’s done a tremendous job. Coaching staff would be an early favorite for coach of the year. They’re doing a nice job. The entire team is.”

With Mason Cole, to know that you’ve got a dependable left tackle with a starting streak and production, what kind of comfort does that give you as a coach?

“I would say he’s our most valuable offensive lineman.”

Does Quinn Nordin have sort of an unusual mentality for a kicker? Seems like a pretty confident and outspoken kid.

“Uh, no. I find nothing unusual about Quinn.”

WIth Rashan and Chase and those guys up front, did you see their presence and with Rashan especially, did you see him making impact plays in his first couple weeks here?

“Yes.”

What about him has stood out to you?

“Running to the football, playing physical, tackling very well. High effort, high talent.”

[Injury updates after THE JUMP]

It’s not everything that always jumps off the stat sheet, too, with those guys. Devin’s [inaudible] around a lot, but Rashan and Chase are up there?

“Oh, way up there.”

With Mason, how hard is it for a guy to go from the inside to the outside? Is it different steps or what has he done that’s impressed you?

“Uh, well, he started as a tackle as a freshman and transitioned to center. How hard is that? I don’t know, I’ve never made that transition. Talent and intelligence; he’s proven he can play any position on the offensive line.”

What did you like about the game on Saturday?

“Uh, we won. That’s our number one job. Took care of the football. Made some courageous throws from the pocket, accurate throws in tight windows. A lot of things.”

How do you guys prepare going from an offense that ran the ball 49 times, only threw nine times, to Purdue, which is probably going to be much more balanced. How do you guys go from that week to week, the contrast?

“You just do. Change the channel from one scheme to another. Change our scheme to adapt, improvise, adjust.”

Chris Evans lost a fumble early and didn’t play again until early in the fourth. This seems kind of similar with what you’ve done with both Wilton and even Donovan Peoples-Jones; they make a mistake, it’s a learning session, it’s not really a punishment. Is that how you handled it the other day with Chris and how do you think he responded?

“No, I don’t agree with that it’s like the others.”

Why not?

[shakes head, stares]

I’m just won—

“Why do you?”

Why don’t you think it’s the same as the others?

[stares]

With Chris.

“Chris is a…this is—”

Well—

“He played in the game.”

Yeah, at the game. He had fumbled—

“It’s not the same. It’s a position where we have three players. We do a rotation. We try to get the freshest back in there and go with the guy who’s got the hot hand. You’ve seen us, that’s what we do at that position. Ty’s the starter, Chris and Karan [Higdon] are gonna play in every single game. I just don’t see it as the same as the quarterback position or the punt returner position.”

From watching him on film, what is David Blough doing better this year and what do you have to do to defend him?

“Well, we’ve got our hands full. That’s mainly what we’re focusing on now [is] coming up with that plan and implementing it today in meetings and in practice. It’ll be a challenge for us. Whole team’s playing really good.”

Tarik [Black] went off the field on a cart. What is his status?

“He’s gonna be out. He needed surgery. He’s got a crack in his foot. Well, outside of his foot.”

Will he be back this season, do you think?

“I… I don’t know. I don’t know.”

And Ty Isaac? Looked like he had some kind of abdominal or maybe rib issue?

“Yeah, think he’s going to be okay.”

As you said, you won the game. You’ve talked about no error repeats with the offense , that they’re not the same mistakes and it’s a young football team. How’s the progress week to week. You’ve won the game and you move on, but what’s your feel as a coach right now with how things are progressing?

“Well, right now I’m getting prepared for conference play. Getting prepared for a good Purdue team and formulating a plan at the beginning of the week that’s going to put our players in a position to be successful on Saturday. So, working diligently at that and we’ll work at it, practice it, and hope to have a great week of practice in preparation leading up to the game.”

Was there something that stood out to you that you liked from last week in terms of maybe it wasn’t there the week before?

“Yeah, there were things. Like I said, you know, I’m sure you can understand we’re facing a very good opponent. All our focus is on what to do to be successful this week and to get another win.”

A lot of focus on the red zone, but what are some of the positives that you’ve seen from this offense through the first three games?

“As I’ve just said, there’s quite a few. Detailed them before. Right now we’re doing our job and that’s getting prepared for Purdue. They’re a very good football team. We’re doing the same thing defensively and on special teams. As I’ve said a couple times, they have a heck of a good football team. Respect that, respect the process of getting prepared for the game.”

With the defense, we talked earlier in the season about how they flew around to the football as well as you’d seen, thought they’d be good and they’re good, etc. Last week was such a change with mental discipline. Did you learn about their football IQ a little bit more in terms of their ability to go from one thing that’s totally different to this?

“Yeah, we talked about it. We’re plowing the same ground. I was really happy with the way our ball club played in this past game. Felt resilient. Felt tough coming out of that ball game. Felt we won it defensively, offensively, and on special teams. Numerous good things offensively, defensively, and special teams, and now it’s onward to Purdue. Getting our team ready for that ball game.”

This is kind of a broader question but I noticed [Saturday] you brought out an Air Force hat and put it on the table. You’ve always had an appreciation for the military. Could you describe not only your appreciation for the military but also the influence—are you trying to institute kind of a military style here?

“Uh, no, but I have great respect for the military. The hat was a hat from the U.S.S. Gerald R. Ford.”

The press will turn on him. No doubt. They have to generate stories. Eventually, the narrative will turn to from "Talk about the progression of your young players" to "Can you tell me if coaching young players makes you want to work with experienced pros again?"

I think we're only a few weeks away the second question.

It'd be wild for about three days and then that reporter's career would be toast.

The media depends on clicks, and if the fanbase turns on a site because it sees that site's reporters as dicks, the site changes reporters.

Nope.  The media report what they think fans will want to read.  Fans don't care about stories just because some media person tells them to.  Tha Ann Arbor Snooze was producing stories right up to the end, but few cared, even though the Snooze was part of the media.

With less than 30% of the season completed and pre-midpoint of the season, my understanding is Black would be eligible for a redshirt, but I'm not an expert. Any experts out there?

49'ers media warning us?

Funny and true...

Mainly ,  I think these are  a waste of everyone's time.  If any alterior motive, he wants to control his narrative by making himself available on his podcast and chosen interviews.

"Your Harbaugh will be enormously affectionate one day and cold and distant the next. This is normal."

And this hits home

'Your Harbaugh has been designed for offense and will require many high-end parts to run said offense. Yet his defense will be better than his offense. This paradox has not been explained."

I accept his approach more when it involves college players, but I think he's just one competitive dude (never heard that before) and sometimes he struggles with his emotions.   This years team is not yet where he wants it to be any more than it is where others want it to be, and it frustrates him because he's rooting for him players so much.  I sympathize with him.  I'm a parent.  Whether his staring and near silence is the best approach to weekly newsconferences is open to question.  There is a middle ground, but that's who he is.  I'm for him because he's for his players.

▪ Warning: Do not seek constructive criticism on your Harbaugh’s players. He will utter nothing but praise. A rule of thumb for operating your Harbaugh: Players who earn the heaviest amounts of praise often deserve it the least. (See Jenkins, A.J, and Baldwin, Jon).

I hope for the team's sake that practice was before this presser - but I don't think it was. That's not going to be a fun practice.

I mean, how pathetic are the reporters who see this over and over, yet don't spend some time thinking through their questions and eliminating the "here's a statement, do you agree with it" or "talk about X" type questions. You would think professional pride would lead them to think more carefully how to phrase a question that might elicit a substantive answer, or at least a respectful one. But no.

Laughed out loud a few times reading this. I'm genuinely curious what type of question would have opened him up...

Also the first question about things he liked in the game last week - I believe the question was specifically about Speight. He said we won the game which is 'his' number one job, and then discussed the courageous throws into tight windows. The transcript makes it seem like the question was about the team.

jamesjosephharbaugh

September 19th, 2017 at 2:32 PM ^

I mean, it may have been a lost cause to get him to open up on this one.  But in the past it seems like very specific football questions - schemes, players and routes, specific plays and how they line up to the other team...X's and O's - sometimes get him to talk a bit.  Not always.

I no longer have to use vulgarity. [Stares] is all it takes. Jim has a team to grow. They are asking him questions he already answered. He is not going to screw around. I will be terrified if I were Purdue.

is showing us that the preparations are coming along nicely. As a fan base, we should support our football team and cheer on our quarterback even when he's not producing.

I trust this coaching staff. This team's mistakes are being cleaned up, as evidenced by the Air Force game. We will be ready in a few weeks. GO BLUE!

Still, this is intriguing.  Ready in a few weeks for what?  Ready how?

QB not producing, huh?

This is further argument for some kind of waiting period before new accounts can post (cause that's all you need to do to rack up those precious points that allow you to support your other accounts), right, some witty name?  swn?

Apureidiot

Just stop with this swn BS. It's annoying and slightly offensive. I'm just saying I trust Harbaugh and Co. to fix mistakes.

If you want to be ignorant, go ahead and disparage me by relating me to some unrelated internet troll on this blog. Heck, I'm sure you could even let some mod check if I'm related to SWN or not.

ensure your message is heard and understood in plain words, you do it this way.  If the media is going to demand answers to certain questions, then the questions should be better framed.

I mean his contention is simple: we won the game on Saturday, and whether you want to judge the performance for style points, the bottom line is always victory.

Now, he responded directly when asked about Black's condition, didn't hestitate or challenge the idea of seeking information about a player's medical condition and availability. And perhaps because he is out, the coach felt he could disclose that.

Look, wiith a coach like this, as a journalist, you ask questions that elicit information in a way that is neither obsequious nor seeks to filter his comments by sugar-coating the purpose of the question with surrounding fluff. Just ask what you think the public wants to know and you think is required to report and write about and you ask it directly. The coach appreciates directness and will respond appropriately when asked a question eliciting thought or when asked a yes or no answer. A reporter should never ask a yes or no question and expect more because he isn't entitled to anything more than asked.

This coach is never going to criiticize his players performance externally, never. He is as reluctant to offer criticism as praise.

What's interesting is that you can always tell when a reporter is asking a feature story question or something that's hard news related. The Rashan Gary questions were feature story questions, justl like the Nordin question, which was the most humorous response without visual or verbal context.

The other questions tiptoed around the issue of offensive performance without directly addressing the issue. And the coach responded in like manner.

You people are brainwashed and twisting yourself into knots in order to defend him at all costs whether it makes sense or not or is fact based or not. If you truly think he never criticizes his players externally then you either have a serious neurological problem that needs immediate attention or you haven't listened to his press conferences before and shouldn't be commenting as if you have some sort of knowledge about the subject.

And he may have answered directly about an injury THIS time but last time he bit heads off for asking and said it would violate their privacy to talk about such "intimate" matters as injuries (wtf?) and so now he violated his players precious privacy according to his own definition and violated his own policy.

What on earth is wrong with just admitting when he's being an asshole to people? If he's willing to be an asshole in public then you should feel free to acknowledge what he feels free to do.

Bo was never warm and cozy with the press either but well respected by those in the know. Also, I believe JH is respecting the privacy of his players. It's not up to him to divulge personal traits or private medical information. I find his PC's entertaining.

Harbaugh doesn't need to be a dick to the press.

They have a job to do, just like him.

As for the stupid questions, he probably has a big impact on that right now by the way he answers a simple question.

Who knows why he's so salty but if its some of the criticism - he should know that some of it is warranted.  Maybe he's unhappy with the red zone play calling as referenced when he said AF had a better call than us on several occasions down in the red zone.  Why is that?

I think the criticism of the red zone offense is obviously warranted and its mostly due to the conservative play calling.  It seems odd to me that when Jim Harbaugh is your head coach that you also have a Tim Drevno, Pep Hamilton and Greg Frey that have a say in the play calling.  Too many cooks in the kitchen?

How many of us have jobs that involve spending 30 minutes being scrutinized and criticized each week about our performance? Most of us enjoy some level of safety and freedom to adjust from mistakes we make day to day or week to week. I would be equally as irritated with the feeling that every decision is being critically questioned (to pull Chris after a fumble, to keep Speight in, to talk about each play as if it is season ending, discuss the specifics of every minor or major injury to a player, etc) would get very old very fast. I don't care how much someone is paid, it doesn't mean they should feel ok with having every decision scrutinized. We became frustrated with Hoke not because of "boo boos," but because he couldn't get it done on the field.

Harbaugh is getting it done on the field. We had a top 10 level team performance in 2016 and are showing even better performance overall in 2017 with less depth and much younger players with higher ceilings. He's recruiting like a machine as well.

When Harbaugh starts losing games (at the level Hoke lost games)....is when he should be scrutinized and have to take it with a smile.

A person's job performance is scrutinized with regard to their ROI by the person or persons to whom he or she reports. Harbaugh report to the University of Michigan athletic director, and arguably the hierarchy above him. Neither the media nor the fan base are among the management chain to whom Harbaugh reports. His participation in the Monday and post game press conferences is requirement of his job which is provided to selected members of the press as a courtesy by the University of Michigan athletic department.

Consider that, while he undoubtably believes that the offense has a lot of work to do, he may not believe that the criticism of Speight in specific and the offense in general is deserved and is angered by the drumbeat that has uniformly been adopted as the media narrative.

I upvoted you, Matt Kudasai.  Harbaugh is obviously frustrated and disappointed with a number of facets of the offense - QB play, playcalling, red zone performance, inability of the OL to dominate, etc.  He's not only the HC, he's the primary architect and leader of the offense.  It hasn't gone well and he's unhappy with where they're at.  Being reminded of it and/or explaining why doesn't sit well with him.

Another factor may be that the defense is at the other end of the spectrum and performing extremely well.  Since he has much less to do with the defense, and the defense has more new starters than the offense, that's got to hurt.

Harbaugh's a perfectionist and his offense is far from perfect.  I'll bet he's tried multiple ways to 'fix' it, but that hasn't really worked.

He's protecting his players and that is surely the right thing to do, but I'll bet that is getting 'old'.

I'll also bet that Bo did not have to tell Harbaugh anything more than once.  He got it the first time.  Speight is not Harbaugh.  Very frustrating for him as he doesn't have an answer yet.

Pressers don't help.

September 19th, 2017 at 6:13 AM ^

I've written this before, and I'll probably write it again... Harbaugh grew up in a sports community that absolutely idolized Bo Schembechler. His dad was an assistant. Jim was at every game, at practices when he could. He sounds a lot like Bo in these pressers. If he doesn't want to answer a question and a reporter keeps following up, he'll sound like that. I wouldn't read anything more into it. He doesn't hate the press. He's just playing that role. If you try and get him to say anything bad about an opponent or one of his players, best of luck to you. He would consider that a sign of weakness in a coach. The better reporters know that.

haha you konw what? Me too! I can recognize I like "salty harbaugh" now because they frankly are a good team. If this was an RR type of team the saltiness gets old. But on a talented team I gotta say say I like shitty Harbaugh.

Now I know how patriots fans feel I guess.
