14 penalties, two INTs, USF has burned two TOs to avoid delay flags, and one guy ejected for targeting. Plus Illinois' offense just makes your eyes bleed.

Oh, and Speight is obviously the best QB on the roster, or else he wouldn't be playing. The case for him is Harbaugh knows a lot more than any of us about QB play and the strengths and weaknesses of each guy on the roster.

The coaching staff will iron out the fumbling issue, and we'll just have to live with occasional erratic throws

Crouch and Dudek aren't God-awful but that's all they've got. Take away the penalties, ejection and blocked kicks and USF is probably up 31-0. There is a serious speed and intensity differential between these two teams.

I thought Illinois would be better than this by now. I'm not impressed with Lovie Smith as a HC in the NFL (and jumped for joy when Tampa took him before the Lions might have), but I thought he'd be okay in college ball. I mean, he's never going to win anything at Illinois, but I thought he'd at least make them respectable.

I don't watch much NFL so I don't know how he was in the League. But usually even unsuccessful pro coaches do pretty well when they go back to college. It's too early to write off Lovie just yet but man they look awful tonight. Penalty #24 just happened BTW.

Illinois was a crater of a program by Tim Beck. Think of Syracuse after the GERG era.

Love Smith is going to need lots of time and patience to turn that program around.
