Magnus gives dire warning about the running game?

Magnus predicts that Evans will wind up as the team's leading rusher.  No problems so far.

BUT, he also predicts that Evans will have WORSE numbers than he did last year (when he had 88 rushes for 614 yards)!  Meaning our leading rusher will only have about 600 yards.

Is this an indictment on the offensive line, or is there something else afoot?  Either way, hold me.

This could not be said any better, except I want to add "what the hell does Magnus know?" about how it is going to turn out.  It may turn out to be by committee; one running back may assert himself to get most of the carries, or maybe two.  We do not know.

Magnus is not exactly going out on a limb, this has been the way of the run game for a while, but I suspect JH would like one or two to get most of the carries.  Yet they have to earn them.

This team will go as far as our offensive line will take them.

This is stupid and Im not giving it a click

Our running game can not get any worse than what we had last year with slow ass Deveon Smith as our main back. Chris Evans will be a good running back for us this year

it says what I suspected. It will be running back by committee. We could have 3 players all rush for 600+ yards this season and then a bunch of others get another 500 or so combined. It means we have a lot of talent back there and not one guy will be expected to carry the load.

However, I think any realist can see that the OL is very likely to be not very good. I won't guess that it'll be a dumpster fire but the odds that it's anything above "average" are very high, IMO. Few fans were as low on Kalis as I was so just about anyone there should see no difference. The areas of concern are LG, C and RT. LT will be ok because Cole will do his usual "B" job there. Whoever is at RG almost surely can't be worse than Kalis (if they just block an opponent that's a win). Bredeson doesn't inspire confidence yet and RT is going to be, uh, not ideal whoever it is. Multiple backs and that OL should make Magnus' prediction accurate. Hopefully we do run a lot of quick throwing pass spread to neutralize the OL play.

Seems to be more about the RB by committee issue than Oline worries. I wouldn't read much into that other than: "we don't have a bell cow RB."

Our run game will be solid. I don't think most realize that we were ranked 32nd nationally in total rushing yards last season (2,768 yds., 4.82/carry) 18th in P5 conferences and 3rd in the B1G. That's with a damn near immobile QB. Our RBs will be better (most with significant game experience) and our OLine will be improved, if not at the very least as good as the unit last season. Factor in receivers that can spread and shred defenses and we've got the potential for a top 10 overall offense in CFB. I could see both Higdon and Evans getting 800+ yards on the ground. Isaac, Walker and company picking up another 1100+ yards.

I predict that Evans will rush for 1,000 yds. It could be slightly less but definitely close. Higdon around 700 and Isaac around 600. The hammering Panda will blast through on short yardage plays and rack up TD's like he did last year. The runners will be punishing. My only question marks will be, whether or not, with Wheatley gone, will Jay teach these talented runners enough for them to improve up to expectations, given his inexperience as a RB coach?

Predictions are high because I think he will do a formidable job.

"McDoom in jets."

Honestly they need to figure out another way to use him. At the beginning of last year it was very effective. By the end of the year it was too predictable. "McDoom's in the game? Jet sweep!"

will increase touches for McDoom, DPJ, Perry and TEs. Think 50/50 run/pass split with attack closer to Patriots in approach: Michigan 2016 #plays - 574 run / 370 pass Patriots 2016 #plays - 482 run / 550 pass We were run heavy in 2016. Offense has more weapons this year and playbook will reflect the overall speed / talent dispersed at RB, WR and TE. Get the ball to speed playmakers in space, less Smith-like up the gut and play action to Darboh.

It wouldn't be a surprise if Evans rushed for less than he did a year ago and we still had more yards. Higdon will match that and Isaac may be more productive in a larger role. It's impossible to predict things like this.
