MBB Coaching Candidates

Submitted by rainingmaize on

While I'm willing to go on the record and say that at least at one point, Beilein was a very very good coach, I'm now willing to move on. I also don't think Beilein is going to be fired at the end of the season. That being said, he is trending towards the hot seat and hopefully this thread can serve as an outlet for people who want Beilein gone to suggest an alternative.

Here are some candidate ideas::

Greg Marshall, Wichita State:
Tremendous record, 444-172 overall in his career, took Wichita to the Final Four. I'm going to guess he's a long shot, but he did show interest in Texas a few years ago, so might be willing to explore Michigan.

Larry Krystkowiak, Utah:
Took over a complete trainwreck in Utah, and has built them into a solid team. No geographic connections however.

Randy Bennett, Saint Mary's:
Surprised no one has hired him yet. Always has that program playing well, and if you like Australians, than he's a home run hire. Not the greatest geographical fit.

Chris Mack, Xavier:
Has had some success at Xavier while also has recruiting connections. Hasn't really been able to take that program to the next step however.

Kevin Ollie, UConn:
Hired by our current AD, won a NC. However has been a bit hit or miss with his own players.

Fred Hoiberg, Chicago Bulls:
On the NBA hot seat now, so might be available. Has familiarity with Big 10 country, did really well with Iowa State which included recruiting a former Mr. Michigan Basketball player. However his time with the Bulls hasn't been impressive and built Iowa State through transfers.

Ben Jacobson, Northern Iowa:
His team always seems like they are an NCAA tourney pest, and I imagine it isn't easy to recruit players to Northern Iowa. Still kinda young.

Kermit Davis, Middle Tennessee State
While his last two years have been good, he's been at MTSU forever and didn't start to have success untill now. Older guy at age 57. But on the other hand, f*** Michigan State.

*EDIT* Archie Miller, Dayton:
I don't know how I forgot about him. Has killed it at Dayton, and is young.

These would be my top picks that Michigan would have a reasonable shot at getting:

1.  Archie Miller, Dayton

2.  Gregg Marshall, Wichita St

3.  Chris Mack, Xavier

4.  Kevin Keatts, UNC Wilmington

It's cute you trying to convince yourself that Michigan could not poach either of those coaches. Mack has a good thing going at that program and I could see him staying put but Miller would be gone in a heartbeat.

I'll take good defense over the curent year after year of terrible defense any day. You don't need a fast paced anything with guys running around the 3 point line with their heads cut off minute after minute. Someone tell me how in the hell is there never a pick and roll out of all of them damn screens? You have to be farging kidding me. All those back cuts when the guys could easily get the ball to them for an easy jumper or lay in. Why even do the back cuts? The defenders don't even care because the passes are never made. Such a stupid offense. My head hurts. Starting to drink patron and oj.

On record as saying we need to let Beilein finish out the year and then evaluate from there. But a few more candidates

Chris Holtmann (Butler) - relatively young, appears to be a good recruiter

Dana Altman (Miami) - less likely, but money talks, recruits well, has turned Oregon into a national contender

Archie Miller are both very good coaches, but do you really think they're better than Beilein? If you look at the schedules Wichita St and Dayton play, its not difficult to have the records they have. Altman is a good recruiter, but not a great coach imho

Add me to the Archie Miller bandwagon. What he has been able to do at Dayton in a now crappy conference to recruit talent to is quite remarkable. They have even had some really bad luck with losing players and they still just keep winning. He's still young and has a lot to prove. He has the energy to match Harbaugh which I really think is needed.

Heard from someone who heard from someone who is in a very good position to know that Calipari has legitimate interest in finishing his career at Michigan.

Take it FWIW.

My top 3 are: 1) Chris Mack - recruits Michigan well, track record 2) Larry Krystkowiak - for not having any obvious ties to Michigan, he has thee Michigan natives on his current roster and another on the way (Donnie Tillman) 3) Archie Miller - young, MW ties. Solid track record

We need some "unaffiliated" street agents and boosters to set up the appropriate recruiting pipeline.  The head coach and coaching staff need not get hands dirty to do this appropriately. Beilein clearly needs help closing on high end recruits...just set up the infrastructure outside his  involvement.

You're right, I just checked. USC got a good hire IMO.. They've gotten better and look to be in pretty good positionig to make the tourny again. Dooley still isn't a bad coach at FGCU, but now that I've done more research not yet at Michigan's level.

Kevin Ollie and Tom Crean would not win here. Ollie is a mediocre coach who had talent left over from Calhoun when he won that title. Now it's his recruits and they suck. Crean can recruit but is one of the worst in game coaches in the big ten. We just beat him with our rag tag group by 40.

Texas made a run at Gregg Marshall and was turned down so money didn't move him.  Archie Miller could have had the Pitt job, which is an hour from where he grew up and close to enough Dayton, and turned it down.  Cal made a run at Chris Mack before he got really hot but that was a bigger geographic move.

I don't think money moves any of those coaches.
