This team didn't win those games because someone put "street fight" on a freaking wall.  They won because they shot 45% and 66% against those 2 teams and got a bunch of turnovers.  The past 2 games, they've shot less well (and really, it's basically just been Irvin) and they've lost.

They also shot 37% from the field overall.  Again, hit a couple more 2 pointers and this isn't much of a game.  I agree they couldn't rebound at all, which is crazy coming off a really good game on the boards against MSU.

Giving up 70 points isn't all that bad, considering it was basically 64 points before the free-throws.  Michigan is 3rd in the conference in points per game allowed (65 pts/gm).  Some of that is due to their incredibly slow pace, but they've been fine keeping teams largely in check during the conference season (save for that Illinois game).  The problem is they have been wildly inconsistent shooting the ball, which is why they are a middle-of-the-road scoring team.

I'm not of the opinion to fire him mid-season but please don't patronize us with the whole, "this loss moved us to the outside of the bubble" nonsense. This team will not make the tournmament and are likely to not make the NIT as well. Look at the schedule and take out the 6 teams that were glorified high school wins at the beginning of the season and then tell me we're close to the bubble. That is a joke.

It's time for the program to start heading in a new direction. UM could be a powerhouse if it wanted to be. It has more than enough resources to be competitive year in and year out.

My vote is to fire Beilein. Did I do that right?

Seriously, I've never seen a softer team. Soft, squishy, mushy, squashy. DId they ever get one goddamned offensive rebound this game? They give the crowd nothing to get excited about.

My father and I were watching the game together and said the same thing. He's the only recruit who's filled out well since that amazing 2012 class. He is a legit killer and a real baller, sucks to see that his team sucks. Defentitly can't blame tonight on him: Walton has done a lot for this team.

If I had to guess realistically, that would actually be my guess - it is not particularly warm at the moment, and further, I have this suspicion that he would probably survive this season almost regardless of how it ends. Now, that being said, I have serious doubts that he survives a repeat of this performance. I guess "lukewarm" might be the worst case for now, but if the last five weeks or so don't go particularly well, I have to think they start asking the hard questions in the AD's office.

Its just like the Brady Hoke 2014 scenarios.

"Okay, what if he wins out and beats MSU and OSU and wins the bowl game? Would that be enough??".

It seems incredibly improbable that this team turns it around. I would have to think he's done after this year and Michigan goes 8-10 or whatever, but who knows.

Brady Hoke's 2014 team didn't have any Marquette, SMU, or Indiana level performances.  (They did have the M00N game.)

This team shows glimpses of being a good team.  And then doesn't show up other nights.

At 4-6 in the B1G, they're well behind schedule. 3 regular season home games left against MSU, Wisky, & Purdue & 5 on the road.

Beilein is at 2013 Brady Hoke: bad performances with some promosing moments. Underperfomred but has a pretty good track record at Michigan. He'll probably keep his job until his contract is up, then we let him go and find someone new. That's my best guess.

I don't think Warde would fire him if the season ended today, but I do think there will be talks about him stepping down either this year or next if there isn't marked improvement.  My guess is Red is gone after this year, and I doubt the AD wants to hire 2 high-profile positions in a matter of months.  But if Beilein can't get this team to play better to close out the year (and I'm sort of checking out of an NCAA bid at this point just because they lost winnable games to both OSU and MSU), Warde's hand might be pushed.

But remember what we looked like before Beilein guys! Don't you remember?! Amakers teams pretty much looked like this but even they had more talent than this team does.

The best Beilein teams were light-years better than Amaker's squads.  Yes, this particular iteration of Michigan basketball is worse than his 2003-04 team and maybe the 2005-06 squads, but I lived those teams and they weren't all that talented.

Beilein was and is a better coach than Amaker in my opinion, but Tommy got better at Harvard (as young coaches should).

If we get blown out by MSU on Tuesday I'm on board.

I get losing to the better teams in the conference. But losing to a shit team in your house, who happens to be one of the worst teams in the conference, and also happens to be your biggest rival, is unacceptable. If we get lose to MSU again, it's time for Beilein for retire.

Unbelievable how far this team has fallen given where we were only three years ago. Now we have to pray just to make the tournament.

Michigan doesn't have to be an "either or" school. It IS possible to be elite in both football and basketball. However, it will not happen with the current BBall staff. Thanks for the memories Coach B. Manuel, it's time for some meaningful change.

bronxblue

February 4th, 2017 at 8:36 PM ^

I really can't think of many schools than can consistently be elite at both.  MSU and Florida have had spurts, but usually one falls off (MSU with football, Florida with basketball).  I think it is very hard to sign the best coaches and staffs when you know you'll always be #2 on the pecking order.

Wasn't the point...it's just been beaten to death already. Like I said below, he's not getting fired in the middle of the season with a winning record and a clean program. No AD in the country would do that. So people need to take a breath, chill, and manage their expectations.

After the season is over however...have at it. Wouldn't be a shock to anyone. Again, I'd hope he found a place in the athletics department because I believe he's good for student-athletes...all student-athletes. And I think he'd enjoy a role where he could "touch" (poor word choice) multiple programs, softball, football, MBB, etc.

Similar to the role of Greg Harden.

But yes, I agree whole-heartedly that it's time for a new MBB coach. But I also know Beilein isn't getting fired and no coach we'd want is coming to Michigan today, tomorrow, or probably even next month.

Remember when Harbaugh arrived? Hint, it wasn't in week 8.

February 4th, 2017 at 8:26 PM ^

We already did this once...and he's not going to get fired in the middle of the season.

After the season is over however, retiring to an alternative role within the athletics department and bringing in someone who can coach, develop and RECRUIT to expectations would be nice.

I agree with you. But it pisses me off to see this team lose to the worst OSU team. I really do not care for a graceful exit anymore. Him and Red needs to go. It seems to be ok to waste some of these kids' career for whatever is left just to give a graceful exit. I am mad and I am sure don't see the reality right now. But screw the graceful exit.
