Warde Manuel being sued by former U-Conn player
http://deadspin.com/ex-uconn-soccer-player-sues-school-after-losing-sch…
A soccer player lost her scholarship after flipping the bird to to ESPNU. They had just won the conference chanpionship. If this is true, it's awful.

That was one of the more badass things I ever saw. Get ejected from Michigan Stadium? Flip over 100000 the bird... totally legit move.

She shouldn't have had her scollie pulled but come on. So excited you flipped off the camera? Pretty lame excuse for doing something so silly.

to pull schollies over flipping the bird, yet not the testicular fortituded to challenge the B1G on rigged officiating. Good to know.

That's make believe stuff.
Harbaugh doesn't strike me as the kind of guy that you make apologize.
December 21st, 2016 at 11:34 AM ^
If he was asked to do so, he would have said NO.
December 21st, 2016 at 3:58 PM ^
Jim Kelly's jaw accepted Harbaugh's apology.

We don't know if he contacted the Big Ten office over that or not. We know that he didn't make a public show of it. Note that he did not do so on the issue of Friday football games either, but evidently communicated to them all the same that we would not be participating.
On this lawsuit, it sounds to me that it was the coach's decision to suspend her scholarship and he ultimately backed up the coach.

I think part of the issue is we are now used to the Dave Brandon style of AD where everything he has to say involves a press conference of some sort aka publicity.
Warde Manuel is the opposite of Dave Brandon in every way possible. He's said before that he does not want to be the public face of the department - it's not the role of the AD to be a media spectacle. I think we need to remember this before we get angry about what Warde Manuel "doesn't say." Just because he's not making a public spectacle does not mean he isn't standing up for both his University and Coach Harbaugh. Another good example of this is the whole Satellite Camp deal. He only mentioned something when he was questioned about his support for Harbaugh. He did not go out of his way to make his thoughts heard, and we should assume this will be the case going further.
We do not need another Dave Brandon type who makes public statements about everything offensive to our University. Besides, like I mentioned above, I'm not sure what good another public statement would have done. Harbaugh made the conversation relevant - the media did not have to hear Warde Manuel's feelings on the subject as well, especially when all that would have done would resulted in more fines for the University. He can shove it down the Big 10's throat without the public knowing about it.
And on another side note, I believe the media has some say in this. Next time Warde Manuel is on the stand, ask him questions about this specifically. Did he support Harbaugh's comments made in the post-game press conference? Was he aware that two of the officials were Ohio natives and had a proclaimed fandom of OSU while also being an alum? Did he discuss those things with the Big 10 office?
The media will have an opportunity to get a response out of Warde Manuel.

I have to say I support her in this.... sounds pretty shaddy.
Not a good look for UConn or our current AD.
I hope he continues to grow and mature in his current position because as the Michigan AD and a "Michigan Man" I hope he side steps any actions that could even remotely be constured as inappropriate going forward.
Someone famous said if you have to cheat to win, then you've already lost. I think this fits the bill at least in spirit.

This definitely looks bad for UConn, but I am not sure how much I put this on Manuel. He is pretty much a footnote in this right now as he is barely mentioned in the lawsuit. It looks like this is more on her coach as he is the one most mentioned in the lawsuit. And we also only have her side of the story right now.
December 21st, 2016 at 9:23 AM ^
to hear the coaches and schools side on this. Maybe this was the last straw among several incidents with this player. Also people need to understand it's a privilage to have a scholarship to play a sport at a college not a right. You don't act appropriately a school has every right to pull that ship.

in the first place. She is a girl who plays soccer. Not sexist or gullible. There is a reason she had a free ride, but not a good one.
I doubt she willl ever understand.

mom did not print and frame this for the wall at home.

This is ridiculous, especially when we see guys raping and punching women staying on scholarship around the country. I understand wanting to uphold a good image, but come on.
Really not impressed with Warde thus far. Still nowhere near yet, but he's trending toward Dave Brandon.

a blind monkey could've picked Harbaugh, and THAT is what has led to attendance. Oh wait, he didn't pick Harbaugh either
December 21st, 2016 at 7:26 AM ^
Unless you put him right at the Hackett level to begin with, he's not trending toward Brandon. He stays out of Harbaugh's, Beilein's, Hutch's and Berenson's way. He does not seek out the spotlight. He may be a bit of a meathead compared to Hackett*, but he's nowhere near the meathead that Brandon is.
So plus one for the graphic. So far I'd give Warde Manuel 3.5 Canhams out of a possible five.
*So am I, w/r/t ability to come in and do what Hackett did. He was incredibly deft at that job.

What did you think of Hackett extending Beilein through age 68 with a top ten salary in college basketball?
December 21st, 2016 at 4:30 PM ^
He needs to get in Berenson's way. Might need to be forced to resign.

Love the graphic.
Hackett was so perfect in his short stint that it will be almost impossible to replicate. Dave Brandon was so disastrous that there were student protests against him. and everyone else will fall in somewhere in between.

Almost from its origin, the U.S. has always had a higher-than-average number of snowflakes. This is partly because equality of opportunity is assumed by many.
At least a handful of alpha males are still doing fine. They have the snowflakes (red team, blue team) divided and conquered pretty well at the moment. (And, yes, there are plenty of red snowflakes.)
