Other than overvaluing Texas A&M, Auburn, and Penn St, I really think the committee has been getting the rankings right. They have really looked at the whole picture and body of work, rather than the BCS 'what have you done for me lately'. I'm confident the rankings will be: Alabama OSU Michigan Clemson Louisville Wisconsin

It should be this, but it won't be this.

Louisville will be ranked ahead of us, even though their "big win" is a loss to Clemson.  But hey, they have all those passing yards and who doesn't like passing yards?

They may even put Clemson ahead of us as well, although that's more iffy.  Clemson has been living on the edge of Clemsoning for weeks now and they've finally gone and done it.  The committee is not likely to look too fondly on that.

ranking, especially in a sport like college football.  Louisville went to Clemson, for a night game, and was what, at like the 5 with a chance to win the game?

you have to win the games.  But, and maybe this is a bigger issue (and why I think they should go to an 8 team playoff), I do think that you have to take into consideration where the games were played and how they played out.

Again, I think winning is the most important thing, but do you think Penn State would have beaten Ohio State in Columbus?  Do you think Michigan should have to win at Ohio State, at Michigan State, and at Notre Dame in some years just to MAKE the playoff?

I guess my point was trying to be that college football is so up in the air in terms of when games are played in the season, where they are played, and the time of the game.

These ranking will mean nothing.  We have to beat Indiana and OSU to  move on.  The only difference between us being 10-0 or 9-1 is essentially cosmetic.

The more concerning issue is how we play in big showcase games.  Last year's OSU we shit the bed.  This year, in an MSU game that should had meant everything to us, we were outscored 13-5 in the second half---to MSMOO, and won by nine points. Now a prime time under the lights game against Iowa, and our performance is, shall we say, disappointing for where it appeared this team was.  Our next big, national attention game is at Columbus, and I fear what Michigan team shows up.

I'm only speaking for myself, but while I realize that we are absolutely still in the playoff hunt, I feel much more pessimistic about the OSU game, given the team's performance on the road (small sample size I know, but that's all I got to work with. and no, Rutgers doesn't count).

Not panicking, but my optimism towards the game definitely took a hard hit. That said, will be cheering my heart-out for the Indiana game like always. Go blue.

It's a realistic trend given where we were in 2014.  We've gotten a little ahead of ourselves.

We are making real progress, but no, we are not Alabama.  And we are still looking up at Ohio State until we can prove otherwise.  But that has not happened yet.

Actually more generous than I expected.  We shit the bed and only dropped one spot.  That's not exactly falling off the App State cliff from #5 to unranked.

Not sure we deserve it, but it helps that everyone else sucked too yesterday.

I don''t have to outrun the bear, I just have to outrun you.

We don't have to avoid embarassing losses, we just have to avoid losses that are as embarrassing as Clemson's.

To be honest we shouldn't be too upset. Michigan losing to Iowa gaurentees OSU will not play in the big ten championship game. PSU plays Rutgers and MSU both at home. If they win out then OSU cannot win the division even if they beat us. And if OSU beats us losing to Iowa makes no difference in the big ten title race

Wow. I just realized OSU has almost no chance of making the Big Ten title game because of our loss

What happens if PSU wins the East and beats Wisconsin. Do they make the CFP? Probably??? Would the winner of Wisconsin/PSU make it while M and OSU watch from the sidelines? Holy cow

Winning out gets any of Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin or Penn State in and we might get two.

Other leagues have 1, maybe 2 teams alive, right?

ACC: Clemson, Louisville
SEC: Alabama
Big 12: OU, WVU? Both are barely clinging to hope
Pac 12: Washington, and maybe Colorado in a doomsday scenario

Obviously, we'd all prefer to win out and remove all doubt when it comes to the CFP, but there is a way Michigan loses to Ohio State and makes the CFP and it's not entirely crazy...

First, Alabama and Clemson win out and are guaranteed spots in the CFP.

Second, Louisville loses to Houston.

Third, Wisconsin loses to Minnesota, Nebraska loses to Iowa and then Wisconsin beats Penn State in the B1G Championship Game. Both Penn State and Wisconsin (the B1G Champ) would have 3 losses and head-to-head losses to Michigan.

Fourth, Okie State loses to TCU and beats Oklahoma who beats West Virginia. Oklahoma would be the Big XII Champ with 3 losses.

Fifth, Colorado beats Washington State and loses to Utah. Washington State beats Washington. Washington State beats Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game.

If this happens:

Alabama would be the #1 seed at 13-0 and SEC Champions.

Clemson would be the #2 seed at 12-1 and ACC Champions.

The other contenders would be:

10-2 Louisville with one win over a CFP Top 25 team (FSU).

11-1 Ohio State

10-3 Penn State and 10-3 Wisconsin (B1G Champ). Both teams would have H2H losses to Michigan.

10-2 Michigan (3 wins over CFP Top 25 teams)

10-2 Washington (with their only CFP win at Utah)

10-3 Washington State (Pac-12 Champs, lost to FCS team)

In that case I think Ohio State and Michigan get in. Wisconsin would play Washington State in the Rose Bowl. Oklahoma would play the LSU/A&M Winner in the Sugar Bowl. Washington would play Louisville in the Orange Bowl. Western Michigan would play whoever in the Cotton Bowl.

You're welcome everybody.

And I'll say it again. I don't buy that line of thinking for one millisecond.

If Michigan snuck in to the CFP at 10-2 because a bunch of other stuff fell our way, I'd expect everyone to be excited. Would you be sticking your nose up at the bid if Michigan somehow went on to win the whole thing and didn't "deserve" to be there?

"Yeah, we beat Bama and Clemson, but damnit we lost to OSU so give it to someone else."

You're right, I'd be happy but it would be bittersweet. I just don't think the committee would give a bid to a team that has lost 2/3 and didn't even play in their conf championship. 10-3 Wisconsin would get in first if they won the Big Ten.

LSU won a National Championship in 2007 with 2 losses.  They were only in it because everybody else around them kept losing.  They did not really earn their way in, they got in kind of by default.

And yet their equipment trucks just say "National Champions."

Doesn't seem to bother them a lick.

It matters in this case because there are no other factors.  What has Louisville actually done to be ranked so high?  Their biggest "win" is a loss.

Louisville is really on my nerves.  They are ranked so highly because the media types are in love with Lamar Jackson and all the passing stats.  But hey, that's what the Heisman is for if you want to reward him.  Louisville as a team has done nothng to be #3 in the nation.

it's not often that a high ranked team loses to an unranked team and doesn't fall more than 1 spot.

So... hypothetically speaking, if Michigan took more than a couple of point hit, how would you have felt if Penn State got ranked ahead of Michigan?

Would head-to-head still not matter if it hit closer to home?

Any other year and I would have drank way too much after the game, slept til 1pm today, then not talked to anyone until I absolutely had to at work Monday morning. Then I would have to talk about the game and play it off like I'm OK as I fight the urge to do absolutely no work for the entire week and flame throw the MgoBoard. Feels good man. I love Harbaugh.
