Bye Week Debate -- Best Band Front Man

Submitted by 608Monroe on

I get into this argument every year or so with friends and family.  If you're like me, you have a strong opinion on the matter.   So in this down week with no opponent to dissect, I ask you to dissect the following:

Who is in your "Top Five" for the greatest "Front Man" of a band in the history of rock 'n roll:

My personal list is:

1.  David Lee Roth/Van Halen

2.  Freddie Mercury/Queen

3.  Mick Jagger/ Rolling Stones

4.  Dave Grohl/Foo Fighters

5.  Steven Tyler/Aersomith

Qualifications:

1.  Stage Presence/Entertainment

2.  Quality of Voice/Musical Capability

3.  Length of Career

4.  # of hits

To the Billy Joel clowns - If he's got a "better resumé" than Bruce, than you guys probably want to include Daryl Hall and Michael McDonald if Top 40 is what this list is celebrating! To be the "best" front man means you owned it on stage, night after night, year after year. You don't have to love all their music equally, just recognize the stage presence and showmanship. Therefore, while musically I put Plant #1, as a showman I have to drop him down a bit: #1 Bruce #2 Freddie #3 Bono #4 Mick #5 Eddie V Then you get to the Plant, Tyler, Roth, Rose, Daltrey tier

But too many to list.  Here's a top of the head list (problem I have is too many great front men don't have a ton of hits):

Mick Jagger

Thom Yorke

Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs)

Scott Weiland (STP)

David Byrne

Black Thought

Lou Reed (VU)

Iggy Pop (And no, The Stooges were not just a backing band.)

Perry Farrell

Alex Chilton (Big Star)

Kurt Cobain

Brandon struggled at first with stage presence and nerves very early on, but once he got rolling, he's been unstoppable. I've seen the Killers live twice, both times from the first few rows and I cosign on this. He is one hell of a frontman.

Yes I had to stop by here to up vote all the Tool comments and discussion I saw. One of, if not, my favorite bands of all the times.

In a somewhat relevant story.. when I saw Tool in Toledo about 5 years ago drummer Danny Carey was wearing a Zach Novak jersey.

I think number 1 for me is fairly obvious and is somewhere on most people's list, but it gets a bit difficult for me from there. In my opinion, just off the top of my head, my 5 are: 1. Freddie Mercury / Queen 2. Roger Daltrey / The Who 3. Joe Strummer / The Clash 4. Roger Waters / Pink Floyd 5. George Clinton / Parliment Funkadelic

I am a Cars fan so I'll add Ric Ocasek, not that he's on the level of many of the others mentioned already.  But, anybody that could get model Paulina Porizkova to marry him must have something going for him.
