Bye Week Debate -- Best Band Front Man
I get into this argument every year or so with friends and family. If you're like me, you have a strong opinion on the matter. So in this down week with no opponent to dissect, I ask you to dissect the following:
Who is in your "Top Five" for the greatest "Front Man" of a band in the history of rock 'n roll:
My personal list is:
1. David Lee Roth/Van Halen
2. Freddie Mercury/Queen
3. Mick Jagger/ Rolling Stones
4. Dave Grohl/Foo Fighters
5. Steven Tyler/Aersomith
Qualifications:
1. Stage Presence/Entertainment
2. Quality of Voice/Musical Capability
3. Length of Career
4. # of hits

I might be Billy Joe's biggest fan. But he's exempt from this list as he's not a front man to a band. But I agree. Billy Joel has the better resume.

It is Mercury or Jagger. Nobody can match the over the top flamboyance and charisma as well as consistent performances.

But too many to list. Here's a top of the head list (problem I have is too many great front men don't have a ton of hits):
Mick Jagger
Thom Yorke
Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs)
Scott Weiland (STP)
David Byrne
Black Thought
Lou Reed (VU)
Iggy Pop (And no, The Stooges were not just a backing band.)
Perry Farrell
Alex Chilton (Big Star)
Kurt Cobain

Not sure if you're joking, but Simmons was an awesome front man. I actually agree. Unfortunately he falls way down the list on quality of voice and # of hits.
He's far and away #1 for tongue length, however. He's freaking giraffe-like in that regard.

but i would say being the bands lead singer is required to be considered a front man. for example, Pete Townshend is one of the greatest performers of all time but he is not a front man.

I'll automatically upvote anyone who mentions Maynard on this list.

Yes I had to stop by here to up vote all the Tool comments and discussion I saw. One of, if not, my favorite bands of all the times.
In a somewhat relevant story.. when I saw Tool in Toledo about 5 years ago drummer Danny Carey was wearing a Zach Novak jersey.

Shit now I'm listening to a ton of Tool AND trying to read the Opponent Watch post. Damn it, mgoblog.
46 & 2 and Parabola may by the most overlooked songs ever.

And pretty fucking good live. I've seen them four times and they sound perfect every time. A Perfect Circle and Puscifer are the same way.

Upvoted for even mentioning Georg Clinton, who we can all agree was awesome in "PCU."

Goddammit. Can't believe I didn't put George Clinton on my list. Was only thinking about rock bands.

I am a Cars fan so I'll add Ric Ocasek, not that he's on the level of many of the others mentioned already. But, anybody that could get model Paulina Porizkova to marry him must have something going for him.
October 13th, 2016 at 11:32 AM ^
I'll continue the old school list by adding alt rock pioneer Peter Gabriel (during Genesis) & David Byrne of the Talking Heads.

Peter wolf.
Used to be known as the second best frontman in rock after jagger.

Freddie. The rest carry his luggage for him.
October 13th, 2016 at 10:29 AM ^
Hard to argue with Freddie. But did you ever see David Lee Roth in his prime with Van Halen. I've never seen a dude command a stage like him, and not sure I ever will again. It was beyond talent.
October 13th, 2016 at 10:34 AM ^
Freddie, Roger Daltry, Mick, Springsteen, I might even through Brian Johnson in there.
