I tackled at the legs out of necessity, as most RB's were significantly bigger then me. not to be dirty, its just football.

You have a very interesting understanding of a chop block.
Diving at an unegaged offensive lineman's knees results in injury a lot less than you think. The problem here is it happened so fast and Grant was out on the edge and moving so he couldn't react with his hands quick enough. It was as innocent a play as when an ankle or a knee is twisted by someone rolling up on another person.
To the poster above it does not need to be at the line of scrimmage. Two wide receivers can easily be called for a chop block on a linebacker or defensive back.

What does his hands have to do with it? On the replay, you can clearly see his foot stuck on the ground as the DB hit him. It's pretty easy to see the knee hyper-extend. Thank God the foot kicked out and he didn't get Napolean McCallum'd...

Players are taught how to protect themselves. It's a combination of footwork and stopping the incoming defender with their hands, e.g., pushing them down and stepping over.

Have tall lineman where knee braces with non-newtonian-fluid-filled dampers that block sudden knee exentsion forces.
Could even use sensors to approximate the nature of the force and damp the force so much that the offending player would basically feel like they were running into a cement knee.

Any chance that maybe we see Cole swing out to Left Tackle and Kugler come in at center? I thought it appeared as if Kugler might be the 6th or 7th lineman after the first couple of games. Might be another option.

If Newsome is to be out for some time, the Rutgers game may be a good time to put Kugler at center and Cole back out to LT. Also the following bye week could be put to use giving Kugler more reps at center.
However, if JBB is up to the task- more power to him.

Doug Skene had no problem with it nor should you. Wisconsin played hard and clean.

this does make downfield blocking on the outside (which Harbaugh has a lot of such play in his play book) more dangerous for OL. I though that the rule apply to both DL and OL.tackling underneath the knee should be always illegal. It can kill a player's career.

I am inclined to agree with on any low blocks being banned, but it does place the defense at a huge disadvantage. How else can a defense defend the toss sweep?
Apologize for the crying remark, but I have seen several fans calling that play dirty. I don't think it was. He as doing what he as taught. He was not trying to hurt Newsome.
If anyone is to blame it is the game itself for teaching players to do this.

His knee bent backwards but is there anyway he could have just sprained it badly?
October 1st, 2016 at 9:35 PM ^
Its possible but Harbs specifically mentioned surgery. Hopefully something smaller like a meniscus.

Looked bad on reply... Anybody know if the braces some of them wear could have protected against the kind of wrong-way extension we saw on tape? I was actually surprised he wasn't wearing braces...
